  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Ceramic Tint suggestions

So I talked to a window tint installer today and he is concerned about the upper brake light. He normally removes the light, tints under it, and then re-installs it. Having never tinted a G70 before, he did not see an easy way for removal. For those of you who have had the back window tinted, did they tint under the brake light or do a cutout around it? If they tinted under it, can you direct me to some information on how they removed and re-installed the brake light to pass on to him? Pics or videos would be most helpful. Thanks!

I just got my G70 windows tinted 2 days ago and the installer I used did a cutout around the light. I don't have any pictures yet (the car is really dirty) but when I get them I will post. Because of the way he did the cut out you can't even tell its there from the inside. I would highly recommend going with the cutout as opposed to taking a bunch of stuff apart, especially if the installer isn't comfortable with it.

If the installer wants to remove a 3rd brake light, you should find a new tint installer. I've removed 3rd brake lights from cars of the 80's era, and maybe a few from the early 90's, but nothing built in the last few decades. It was common to remove the 3rd brake light from old cars (think 80's GM) since the 3rd brake light was a few inches above the rear of the glass, which is a stupid design by modern standards, but they were an add on required by safety regulations in the U.S. during some of the vehicles that were already in production and not a new design.

Yeah...not sure I want anyone to mess with the headliner

You can kind of see the cutout on the rear tint for the 3rd brake light. (Up at top middle of rear window, fairly wide)

Personally, I would stay far away from anyone even wanting to touch the headliner. Supposedly, for our cars, the headliner is a real PITA to work with.

First time I put ceramic tint I was so surprised how much better it is in blocking the heat. Check out videos in YouTube and see the test comparisons. A light ceramic tint can block more heat than dark 5% limo tint. I live in area where temps reach 118° and I can run my A/C on low. Keeps vehicle cool. Worth the extra cost.

So here are the pictures of the third break light. Not the best but you can see how minimal the cut out is.

Thanks for the pic...I agree and am looking for another installer who is more comfortable doing the cut-out.

Thanks for the info...what percentage and what State? We are limited to 32% in GA.

I live in the worst state of California.... we are not allowed tint on front door windows but I have 25% and 15% on rear. Ceramic is more expensive but makes a big difference blocking out heat.

So if I understand you right...there is a significant difference even with no tint on the windshield and none on the front door windows?

Looks great! Did you get the cut-out around the third brake light and did you do anything to the front windshield?
Posted the pics earlier of the cut out. Scroll up to see those. Nothing on the windshield. It's not legal here in Georgia.

Sorry...got confused on the pics. I was hoping there was a legal windshield option.

That's true. I could have gotten the stripe at the top. I just don't care for the stripe. I do have a custom cut windshield shade from Weather tech that I use to keep heat out.
