In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. Curbed my rim

It's okay, I got mine too lol

I'd rather curb the wheels than park an inch closer to some a*****e who'll ding my door.

I think a good tip to remember re parking is NEVER park in slot where the car on either side has dinged doors. Those people don't care about their doors or yours. I LOVE parking at Costco with their extra large parking slots.

If you go to WalMart, park next to the cart return. There are never any carts there but they are all over the rest of the lot.
I never went to the closest supermarket where I lived as the parking lot was too tight. Where I am not the spots are wider and parking is on an angle. The store also does a good job of collecting carts.

Just dropped off my wheel at the repair shop. They said it will take longer than normal to fix it, as they want to get the color just right. Got to drive home using the spare for the first time.....also the first time I've had a car with a non-steel spare! Hah.

Max speed is 50mph, I felt dumb driving down the freeway back home so slowly. But, the upside was I got amazing gas mileage for the ride home. Check it out...

Haha. Turns out the AWD V6 can get really good highway mpg if you just go slow enough!

Solid observation. My recommendation would be to take your wife/brother/child's car to go shopping instead. Or buy some cones and leave them in the trunk. Deploy at your discretion in the back of the parking lot

When I dropped my wheel off on Thursday, I was told it would be ready by 4PM Friday. Before driving over to pick up the car, I called and was told it wouldn't be ready until 4PM Monday. I don't remembrer if that slid to Tuesday.

Their lot was full of Teslas and other high price rides. I guess we're the few that don't like wheel scapes. My neighbor has a Tesla 3 that has both wheels on the right scraped up. The PLUS is with right wheel scrapes, you don't see them if you're careful and approact the vehicle from the left. Same with dents.

Like the way you think! When you pick up a passenger, do you have them get in on your side and slide over?

I once had a donut deflate on the highway. So when I dropped off my rim for repair, I stayed off the freeways on the off chance that I didn't want to end up with a deflated donut on the freeway. And I limited my speed to 40-45 MPH. I only had about 5 miles to my home from the tire shop.

About 10 years ago I was on a road trip with my '95 Mustang in mid Idaho when one of my tires let go due to a blister. It was on a Sunday so decided to stay in town for an night and then get a new tire in the morning before continuing my drive. However, in the morning, this dinky town I was in only had one tire shop and they didn't have the right size tire. Missoula was the closest place with a tire so I made sure my donut was properly inflated and headed for Missoula (80 miles away) at around 35-40 MPH, holding my breath. A lot of cars and trucks passed me, actually they all did.

Was a happy camper when I pulled into Missoula. If my donut had crapped out on the drive, I probabaly would have ended up on a flatbed truck. I carry one of those air bottles that are supposed to fix a flat on a regular wheel in addition to my Genesis donut. Wish my G80 had a real spare tire, but because of the staggered wheels it doesn't.

The G80 or in my case Hyundai Genesis has ample storage for a full size spare. I've used an curb damaged 2012 R-Spec 19" wheel with a front sized tire on it as a spare even though I have a staggered setup. It can be used either on the front or rear just like the spare can be used either spot and fits just fine in the trunk spare well. I also carry the donut with me in the trunk whenever long distance travelling just in case.
It's amazing to me that there is such concern mentioned about limiting the speed while driving using the spare donut. Especially after seeing other less refined/capable vehicles speeding along at 80mph plus sporting a similar donut without a care in the world. Something tells me that they don't have plans to replace the original tire/wheel soon either... Tough little buggers! (the donuts that is):giggle:

My old advise with the donut wheel is keep the air pressure at the recommended setting. The one time I had a donut fail, the tire pressure in it was low as I had never used it before and forgot to check it. I hit a minor pothole which compressed the tire to the point where it broke eat seal on the bead, going flat in a second.

This sounds like it will be the case with mine. Initially they said it would be ready by friday....no go. Now I'm hoping it's done tomorrow (Monday), but I wouldn't be too surprised if they don't finish it until Tuesday. Oh well, still a ton cheaper than a new rim from the dealer.

Shoot... really screwing this up... first posted in the wrong forum, then posted in the right forum but forgot to search for an existing post - and was kindly pointed to this thread already created! lol. Had the same exact experience - it really shook me up obviously! lol

Unfortunately wife was in the car so it hurt even worse when I managed to bounce her brand new car off the curb. I'm not sure about the recommendations here about repairing the wheel though - I mean, yeah, seems a lot cheaper than the $1100 I'm looking at to replace wheel and tire - but it's a brand new car and it's HERS... so I'd feel better making things right. ;)

Anyone in the California area wanna buy the scraped wheel and tire? I really doubt keeping it in the garage for some future need will pan out for me.. Now I wish we had bought that stupid key fob / wheel damage insurance!

We have one of these in town. My son had curbed a wheel on his new Mazda within a few weeks. For $125 they fixed it in one day and you cant tell where the repair was - and it was scuffed really bad.
You should check it out - the money saved might be worth it, lol, you could get a few nights at the beach.

^^ replacing a wheel for that minimal amount of damage is nuts. a mobile repair would charge ~$100 and would be good enough for 99% of owners. but if your wife is picky and in the remaining 1% you may need to go to a wheel repair shop for a more thorough repair. might cost ~$200 doing it that way but the repair would match OE specs and finish.

bottom line, you have excellent options that all avoid a re+re of that wheel. i know scraping a rim is annoying, but it happens. and if you restore it back to OE condition there's nothing she can complain about...even though she probably will.

hey, consider yourself lucky. my buddy's wife has nearly destroyed each of his Golf R's rims and he either clams up about it or faces world war 3. your damage is nothing.

I just realized that I never updated this thread after my repair.

The repair took forever. The shop kept saying they needed more time, and ultimately it took TWO WEEKS for them to finish the damn repair. They told me they were having trouble matching the finish.

When I finally got it back the finish was perfect, but the color was ever so slightly lighter than the rest. Looking at it in person it's impossible to tell, but in pictures you can see them side by side easier so you can see the difference.. (passenger rear).

Here you can easily see it, but part of it is due to lighting, also brake dust on the fronts...

After car wash, looks much more similar...

Even so, I don't care anymore. I think I paid about $140. The shop told me that there is no other color that's the same, so they had to come up with the match from scratch, hence the additional time and it being not exactly perfect. They offered to keep trying, but after two weeks I just wanted my wheel back.

I'm sure other rim repairs can be better or worse. But, that was my experience at this one particular shop for my car.

So I have a small rash on my right rear the damage is not too bad that I think with some touch up I can cover it up and it won't be noticed. Has anyone played with any after market paints to try and get a color match for the Sport wheels?

My previous car was a Volvo C70 and the outer edge of the wheel and tire were in the same plane. That is, if I touch the curb with the rubber it would scrape the rim. Scuffing the tire would not save the metal. I just checked and my wheel is about 1/8 inch set back from the tire. Not enough to save the rim on a real curb scrape but maybe, MAY-be on a light scuff. What is the tire wheel plane on other G70 tire/wheel setups?

My wheel is like this:

Mine still has less than 2k miles on it and like a dumb ass took it to a touchless car wash. It had one of those steel tubing ramp activators, just one on the drivers side. I took a section of old carpet I had to be careful with my wheels and put it over the top of it to protect from scratches and it still messed up my wheel, not just the front but the rear also after driving over it when the wash was finished. Then just the other day I curbed both wheels on the opposite side so now all four of my wheels match with similar damage. Close up it breaks my heart and if you're looking for it but just standing next to it it's barely noticeable. I figure even the most careful person, at some point it will happen again. Have you any thoughts about wheel guards/protectors? Not talking about the stick on strips. Something like this? PRODUCTS > ALLOYGATOR WHEEL PROTECTION

^ yeah i see those around a lot these days. while i've never been a fan, they do look halfway decent if the colour matches the rim - or at least they are subtle so as not to offend. some clowns like to use contrasting colours - like a bright red protector on a silver rim, etc. not cool, especially once they get damaged.

usually these protectors wind up beat to hell so they look like crap or become partially dislodged, but i suppose the wheel is spared the damage and the protector is easier/cheaper to replace than fixing a wheel.
