  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hi Guys,

when do you change for first time your engine oil?
Some people change it on around 1000 miles for first time and then go along with the manufacturer maintenance schedule.
Others change the oil on around 1000 miles, after that on around 3000 miles and then go along with the manufacturer schedule.

What is your opinion?

P.S. According to my maintenance schedule, the first change must be done at 12K miles.

Follow your own idea - change at 1-2 thousand miles to synthetic oil.

Given the oil change interval (12K miles) specified for the European version of the Genesis, they may use synthetic as factory fill.

I changed my own oil after 600 miles. Put Castrol Titanium in and a Wix 10033 oil filter.

Be aware that there have been problems using oil filters not from Hyundai. There is a TSB about this.

Everyone always spells doom and gloom in using another oil filter. As long as it is the right one, they can NOT deny warranty. Plus the wix filter is made in south Korea and comes with the o-ring and crush washer. To top it all off I have a discount at O'Reilly's and makes it a few dollars cheaper than the dealer, the filter is still $7.80 all in. My dealer won't deal on parts and buying them online and shipping them to me costs almost the same buying it at the dealer. So I'll buy the Wix filter. On a side note, the Wix filter is the only available aftermarket filter, nobody else makes it.

The odds that Wix makes it is slim also. It is probably the same filter as the OEM made by Mahle. You might want to get one filter at your dealer just so you can make sure the Wix is the same as the OEM.

Nah, I'm fine from the one I got from the parts store. The Mahle filter was obviously installed in the car originally as the filter had 'Mahle' on it. This filter didn't have any markings and had rubber o-ring seals on the end of the filter; it seems they updated the filter to provide a better isolation seal between the two pressure differentials.

Were the O-rings green in color? End caps hard plastic (black)?

The end caps were hard plastic and the o-rings were black. If you go to wix's website it will show you a picture of the filter.

Suit yourself. BTW, Mahle makes the plastic filter housing also, so not sure what you mean by the Wix being "updated."

Personally, I would not want to get into a argument with Hyundai if I make a warranty claim and have to show receipts for my oil and oil filters (I do my own oil changes).

I take a slightly different spin on such a situation:

Hyundai, or a Hyundai dealer, would not want to get into an argument with me in a similar situation -- with or without receipts -- been there, done that.

It's not the receipts that would worry me. I do my own oil changes and have no fear of my warranty claims being denied. But if they asked me for proof of my oil and filter purchases, I would not want be handing them receipts for an after-market filter just to save $2 per filter.

Aside form that, the Wix filter looks different than the Mahle. The Wix has hard plastic end caps with some rubber gasket material, and the Mahle has soft flexible end caps.

On every other car I have owned, I almost always used after-market filters. But the Genesis cartridge filter is different IMO.

I don't know about the Genesis, but in the Sonata YF forum there are several threads where the poster noticed mechanical engine noise that stopped once a Hyundai filter was used. There is also a TSB telling dealers about the problem.

This problem is due to people using fram filters. I also use Puralator Pure One filters on my Mom's and my wife's Sonata's with out any issue. Both of the Sonata's have 15k and 35k respectfully.

Filter prob. was discussed on the Sonata Nf forum about ten years ago

Non-oem filters said to cause engine noise. TSB 05-20-002 released 7/05

Can anyone tell me what weight. I have always used 5W-30. Costco has it on sale for $27 for 6 so I picked up a couple of cases. I hope to purchase a 2016 this weekend. Caspian Black with the Ivory Interior. If I do purchase I will need to check the book. Just hoping I got the right weight?

Based on the 2015 Owner's Manual (which should be the same as 2016), Hyundai specifies 5W-30 for the V6, and 5W-20 for the V8. I would probably use 5W-30 (or Mobil 1 AFE 0W-30) for either.

The V6 needs 7.29 quarts, and the V8 needs 8.45 quarts, for drain and refill.
