The V8 can use 5w-30 according to the owner's manual. I use 0w-30 Mobil 1.
Absolutely correct. I only said that they recommended 5W-20 in the owner's manual for the V8, and the reason they have is for better fuel efficiency. More than likely they used 5W-20 as factory fill to eek out slightly better mileage for EPA testing. The V8 can use 5w-30 according to the owner's manual. I use 0w-30 Mobil 1.
That's not what is says in the USA edition of the 2015 Owner's Manual that I downloaded. For the V6, the minimum recommendation for viscosity is 5W-30. For the V8, the minimum is 5W-20. Obviously OW-nn synthetics can be substituted for the 5W-nn versions without any problem. You can use whatever you want, even melted whale blubber however this is what the 2015 manual states.
"For better fuel economy, it is recommended to use an engine oil of a viscosity grade SAE 5W-20 (API Service SM ILSAC GF-4). However, if the engine oil is not available in your country, select the proper engine oil using the engine oil viscosity chart"
The above was written for both the Lambda 3.8 and the Tau 5.0.
Both Charts show alternatives as being 5W-30 for temps down to -30 and also 10w-30 however the lower temps should not be less than 0F. (key word is "alternative" which is means acceptable however the interpretation is open for discussion if it is as good as the recommended)
Bottom line is the recommended oil for either the V6 or V8 is SAE 5W-20 and it even says so on the oil filler cap. We do not need to discuss the alternatives since 5W-20 is available everywhere that I know of![]()

Since you have a Canadian version of the Genesis, Hyundai Canada may have different specifications due to different weather conditions. Note that warranties are offered by the local marketing companies (Hyundai Motor America, or Hyundai Canada, so they can define their own specifications).
It is possible that the Bulgeria version (location of OP) requires synthetic oil, as that is what was recommended to a British member when he contacted Hyundai in the UK.
But bottom line is that a 20 weight oil will yield better fuel economy, and a 30 weight oil will yield better engine longevity (but don't assume one can go above 30 weight for even better longevity).
At one time, Hyundai specified 5W-20 for both engines, but changed to 5W-30 for the V6 only. I don't recall when that change was made. I decided to use 5W-30 (or 0W-30) prior to Hyundai changing their recommendation, because I believe it results in better engine longevity. I have used Mobil 1 synthetic since the first oil change.Yep, you are correct. The V6 recommendation is 5W-30 and the V8 is 5W-20. I have corrected this in my post to avoid confusion.
Thanks guys, for your input. If I get the car tomorrow, as expected, I will pick up a couple more six packs of Mobil 1 at Costco before they go off sale. I did notice the owners manual states the oil capacity for the V8 is 8L (8.45 quarts)! This is wrong as I do know I get 8.8l (9.3 quarts) in which is ideal as I buy the oil in 4.4L containers. With 2 containers dumped in I get about 1/8" below the dipstick full mark, just right. I suppose 9L (9.5 quarts) would bring it right up to the full mark. Either my dipstick is off or the spec is wrong. The previous oil change was done at my friends garage, he put in 9x 1L bottles. Hmmm.
My Genesis V6 engine is definitely quieter with Mobil 1 5W-30 or 0W-30 (compared to 5W-20).I have a vehicle that the factory recommends 5w-20 oil. I noticed that there was a ticking sound from the engine at idle when it is very hot in the summer. I switched to Mobil 1 0w-30 and the problem went away. I use this in all of my vehicles.

So you are saying the V8 requires perhaps 1 full quart above the specified approx. 8.5 qts.?
That's getting to be a lots of oil - I'll watch for the problem as I plan to do the oil/filter change as soon as wx gets better & will report back.
But - all things considered - even synthetic oil is cheap (relatively speaking) and there are some things to be said for a large oil fill.
Yep, exactly what I am saying. Regardless, I do not think anyone changes oil without verifying the level on the stick to confirm proper amount. Definitely a typo that should be addressed by Hyundai. Would like some feedback from anyone else who does there oil change themselves to confirm my findings. For the record, I use 5W-20 full synthetic on extended intervals @ 10,000 km (6,200 miles)
When I say noise, I don't mean from the cabin, but when standing over the engine bay with hood open. There have been similar comments from V8 owners about engine noise over the years on this forum.Next time - get a V8 - faster & quieter too.
Ok - just joking - a little bit.
This is the only 0W-30 that comes up when searching the 2015 3.8 recommended oils on Mobil's website. Anyone use a different Mobil 0W-nn?

I don't think it is completely odd, since the main reason for 5W-20 is improved gas mileage, and 5W-30 provides better engine longevity. It's just a matter of what the priority is.As an aside, does anyone else find it odd that Hyundai went from a 5-20 spec in the older gen to a 5-30 in the newer V6's?
I live in one of those "wealthy" No. VA counties - all the police do is spend money like crazy - so they don't put out much in the way of speed traps - makes the taxpayers angry.I could not afford to get a V8 engine. Where I live, Smokey owns the road and has speed radar traps almost everywhere. I have a hard time not speeding with my 3.8 V6.
