Re: Exhaust---Borla has it on the racks!! UPDATE 04-07-10

Alvint, did your dyno testing include fuel ratios? I am interested in seeing how your system leaned out open loop wide open throttle.

We do not test for this. Is this a common test in your experience? Please provide information (procedure and benefit) about this for those of us who don't understand. Thanks.

Re: Exhaust---Borla has it on the racks!! UPDATE 04-07-10

Alvint, I have seen some dyno readouts where air/fuel ratios are loaded into the results.

My own testing of an intake derestricted Genesis has air/fuel ratio at about 12:1 at wide open throttle - open loop. For max power on open loop I like to see about 12.8-13:1.
Your results are important to me as it would show just how much air you are flowing, and whether or not you are still running rich at wide open throttle.

Re: Exhaust---Borla has it on the racks!! UPDATE 04-07-10

Not sure how much improvement this would be over the stock exhaust without custom headers incorporated with the Borla kit.

yeah... im really wondering what a 4-1 dual equal-length header would do..... there are some pinch points in the stock exhaust so a kit is good to free up quite a bit of flow....

there is allot of room in TAU!

Re: Exhaust---Borla has it on the racks!! UPDATE 04-07-10

When do you expect a final version(s)? Sounds like the majority would like a little more subdued sound (except at WOT), where as few would like the aggressive sound from that first video.

Im picking up my car from BORLA this Friday, so I'm assuming they already have a final version ready to go. I'll try my best to get the DB levels posted this weekend, look for some pretty detailed info.

Im not sure but it sounds as if they may be offering both cat-bac and rear section when they go to market. I'll have to ask the Borla rep when I see him.

Excellent, let us know what he says!

Re: Exhaust---Borla has it on the racks!! UPDATE 04-07-10

Maybe this was mentioned earlier in the thread, but did Borla say that they were also going to make a version for the 3.8?

I hope so considering the majority of sales for the Genesis sedan are the 3.8. at least that's what I think I read somewhere on this forum?
It would make a good business case for them.

Re: Exhaust---Borla has it on the racks!! UPDATE 04-07-10

Initial experience

I just got my car back from BORLA> All I can say immediately is WOW (to save a 4 letter expletive)! So I did it right, I drove back from Oxnard to San Diego on PCH, then through LA! I was so excited about the exhaust I drove mainly in the shiftronic mode most of the way....pick-up is notably different - in and out of shiftronic; now the Genny behaves as it were completely different car.

The BORLA rep and I went for a test drive, we were followed by a car full of teenagers and got several head snaps while cruising through town. During the drive south I was constantly surround by BMW's, Audi's, Corvettes, and Mustangs some cracking their windows, gawking, and cruising along side-front-back to check out the car; at least that’s what I noticed. The Genesis COMMANDS allot more attention now. My wife was driving behind me most of the way and noticed the same thing. She said from her seat the car sounds fierce when accelerating hard, while cruising it seems to purr, and from inside the car she said it sounded like a muted growl when revving with the windows up. I can say it sounds like a beautiful symphony of power from the inside of the cabin. From the inside of the cabin it’s very easy to have a conversation. Cruising at 70-80mph, the audio system completely mutes exhaust tone at level 5-6(light jazz).
From the driver seat I can say that on WOT I get sucked back in the seat now. The Genesis seams to pull quite a bit stronger(and longer) now. I also discovered that a quick blip with the throttle while downshifting will snap the trans into gear. The exhaust level is nowhere near overbearing from inside the cabin. I will post a complete amount of data very soon. I can say this with a great deal of confidence that if you are after more sound, attention, and performance this exhaust is a MUST! People will approach you at gas stations, parking lots, casinos, restaurants and ask what the hell is “that”. If you prefer a whisper quite subdued entrance this exhaust is NOT for you.

Re: Exhaust---Borla has it on the racks!! UPDATE 04-07-10

Initial testing:

I am using a simple hand held digital decibel meter that has a foam cover for wind suppression.
>note: at level 5-6 the audio system plays at an average of 66.67db

These are my initial findings. As I discover more pertinent information or conclude additional testing I will post it.

start up:
windows up> 68db
windows down > 70db

Idle:
windows up> 50db
windows down> 62db

rev @ 4000 RPM:
windows up> 72db
windows down> 78db

acceleration light in "D":
windows up> 72.9db
windows down> 78db

acceleration medium in "D":
windows up> 83 db
windows down> 88db

acceleration hard(1/2 to 3/4 throttle) in "D"
windows up> 82.5db
windows down> 89.3db

acceleration WOT in "D":
windows up> 83.5db
windows down> 91db

acceleration WOT in "1st":
windows down> 91.2db

FINDINGS:
As I continue to test this system(and enjoy it) I find that it seems to be unique in the fact that it is able to be quiet and refined and a fanged street-rod at the same time. I'm sure Hyundai engineering plays into this very much; things like laminated glass, structural rigidity, and insulation all play a part in this. The one thing I am noticing is that with aggressive driving it is VERY very apparent that the ESC system does not shut off completley. I am anticipating that sedan will be significantly faster(and more fun!) without the interferance from the ESC system. It sounds like a hopped up Vette or Camaro. I've owned a Vette, albeit a modified '85, and driven a 2003 475hp SLP Camaro. The Genesis SEDAN is more rigid, better ballanced, well and FASTER!!!!! Well and IMO it sounds better too. I'm in southern CA and want to connect with some car enthusiasts. Anyone?!!

all opinions, questions, and conversation welcome

Re: Exhaust---Borla has it on the racks!! UPDATE 04-07-10

Is the Borla available in norther California? Also, what does this change do to the warranty?

K - so I re-read the entire thread and I want to put this on my car! WOWZERS!

Bradyb: how is the car going thus far? I'm in norther California, I'm guessing I have to drive down to get this done. :-)

Not sure what you're asking. Please clarify..
We will have a limited of our Cat-Back systems (140377) available for those anxious to purchase as early as next week.
Perhaps you can be one of the first to have this installed in Northern California! Stay tuned...

>Flamenguista:
car is still doing great. im sorry to report i dont have any mileage figures yet but after a couple weeks of more aggressive driving, the ECU is adapting nicely; especially shitpoints=etc. i have had to seek out and implement a traction control elimination modd. this is where the car really shines without the traction control interfereing. burnouts, drifting, and lots more fun! as i understand Borla will/can ship the system to your home or installer. its a pretty easy install if you have a rack or access to one.

Borla uses their specially developed ATTAK racing teck to tune the exhaust and provide max performance, look at www.borla.com for more detailed info.

Re: Exhaust---Borla has it on the racks!! UPDATE 04-07-10

Alvint-

I have a few questions about your Genesis dyno runs. I am a motorcycle man and we always do dyno runs in one gear, either 4th or 5th to show HP and torque.

1) Why are your dyno runs done in automatic? If a person wants full power in this car he will be handshifting. Why don't you do it in one gear like the motorcycle people do?

2) Why does your runs for the Genesis drop off at +- 143 mph? Is that all the fast your dyno will record? Did rev limiters on the car kick in? The dynos for motorcycles goes up to 200 mph.

Thank you-

I agree. I am waiting to see what the upgrades are on the 2011 to purchase a Gensis. I would be very interested in a Borla system if it didn't add to cabin noise at cruising speeds, but had sound under acceleration. Thanks.

I'd also like to know what mechanical changes are expected in the 2011.
IMO, our new cat-back is noticeable while cruising without annoying cabin resonance. We could have made it sound like stock in the cabin, but most people wouldn't have been happy with a stock-sounding system. Besides, it wouldn't sound as awesome on the outside!
