  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

flutter @ 25-30mph

The dealership just replaced drive shaft to resolve this issue. However, now the overall background noise has gone up while car is idling, fluttering noise seems to be more frequent compared to occasional when weather was cold, car also feels bit more hesitant/sluggish or gears seem to be sticking. At this time, I can't tell if it's an artifact of incorrect installation or the result of new component in the old system. Now I'm second guessing proceeding with the replacement and not pressing to find out from the Hyundai engineering team whether this was a critical issue or a nuisance. Has anyone seen this happen after the replacement? Any thoughts?
In this case, they need to re calibrate the transmission or replace the transmission assembly too.

Just started noticing this noise on my 2016 3.8 AWD. Verified the radio and HVAC were off. Even coasted in neutral to eliminate engine speed.

It happens when going 25-33, either accelerating or decelerating.

Have an appointment Monday.

Recently took my '15 3.8 AWD in for this issue, and provided the sheet that rojo2223 provided. He even looked up rojo's repair with the VIN and showed it to me, and still didn't believe it was the driveshaft.

They claimed that by replacing some bolts on a heatshield they were able to fix the issue. I took it out for a test drive in busy traffic and couldn't really hear it, but of course, this morning on my drive to work (mostly through town, so all 25-35mph speed limits) it's all I can hear.

So TL;DR: It's definitely not the heatshield.

Update (comment above): After taking the car back to the same dealership and having them investigate a cold-start rattling sound, as well as this fluttering sound, I AGAIN showed them the sheet that Rojo2223 provided. On that sheet, it very clearly states that the solution they found is to replace the propeller shaft.

So naturally, my dealership says that this is insufficient information for them to recommend a service plan. So they need to investigate the problem themselves. Even after the whole heatshield deal. So that's great, whatever, they put up in a rental through Enterprise (base model elantra, wow those things are cheap) on Friday, and then by Monday they've called me back and informed me that the solution they found was that the rear right brakes (sound comes from console and front right), because the lube that's supposed to go on the back of the pads and all the other spots was not there.

They then drove the car and claimed the problem was solved, but of course, this morning during my drive to work through a town where the speed limits are either 25, or 35, I heard the same sounds again.

So my advice is bring Rojo's sheet with ya and hope they actually follow the same procedure, but unfortunately that didn't work for me. From the perspective of a mechanical engineer, and reading through everyone else's replies, it's sounding like it's just a case of the prop shaft reaching a resonance or the bearing not supporting the shaft appropriately. So if anyone is attacking this themselves outside of warranty, I'd say try shimming the bearing up or down a bit, or somehow balance the shaft better.

Best of luck!

There is a fluttering sound that I hear between 25-30mph and I cannot determine where it is coming from. It doesn't seem to be in the cabin. From my limited 'testing', it only happens when decelerating gradually (either coasting or braking lightly). Once I push the gas pedal, the sound goes away even at the same speed. Step off the gas, the sound comes back.

I believe I have seen other threads where this is mentioned. Has anyone else noticed this? Is there a remedy? It's driving me (and consequently my wife) crazy.
Seems to be a common problem at 25 to 35mph. After researching these forums found out that it is the driveshaft. Dealer replaced mine under warranty - fixed!!!

Anyone know the cost out of warranty? Do you have to get the entire shaft replaced?

looks like 5 year/60K for second owners. I would call your local dealership....
If the car has been CPO, then you get the remainder of the 10/100k drive train and the remainder of the 5/60 bumper to bumper. I just got mine 1 week and half ago and it was a CPO car, thats what my paper work shows.
Speaking of the driveshaft, mine 5.0 is back at the dealership as I type this, there tech and service manager heard and felt a vibration from the center of my car, and found that the driveshaft needed to be replaced. Ordered it yesterday, will have it on Weds morning and ill have the car back wed afternoon...

UPDATE: After about 1 month the drive shaft is now vibrating at 26 to 30mph. No fluttering sound like before, just the vibration. This is ridiculous. Hyundai really needs to address this given the number of problems people are having

Wait, you mean 1 month AFTER you got it replaced?

Yes one month after replacement. Feels like the driveshaft is vibrating through the armrest. Getting tired of sitting at the dealer for this car. Have had multiple other non drivetrain related issues. Really questioning the long term reliability and thinking of moving on although I really do like the car.

Mine does it only for first 10 min or so, and hardly noticeable after changing the diff fluid for some reason. I just try and live with it :(

I'm getting this flutter noise as well. Like the mentions above, I also experience the noise between 25-35MPH. I have roughly 27k on the vehicle.

It happens during acceleration, coasting, etc. Get above 35MPH, or accelerate quickly and the noise is gone.

Couple this with the sunroof rattle and I am losing my mind!
Exactly the same issues...flutter like a piece of rubber is flapping at 35mph (57klm/hr) and the stupid creaking noise from the sunroof when opened

Bought my CPO car 14 weeks ago. After 11 weeks in the shop I finally have it back. The tally, 1 new rear diff, 1 new transfer case, 6 different drive shafts. The result. No more grinding noise but I still have the horrible vibration at 25-28 MPH. Car has 22k miles now, purchased at 19k. Most of those are test miles.

This is a nightmare. I would imagine any car fax would kill any chance of me selling it. I bought the extended bumper to bumper for 1500 bucks which takes the entire car to 10/100, figured after all this I better. To say I am disappointed with this car and purchase is a gross understatement.

Had the field engineers out two different times and they were signing off on the parts so obviously they have no clue how to fix it. Since the vibration is still present I am gonna assume at some point the noise also comes back. I am told by the engineers the vibration is normal. LMFAO. Genesis brand may not be around for much longer. You can’t have a premium product with these issues in refinement.

Hi everyone, I had the drive shaft replaced on my 2016 genesis sedan and the flutter noise went away (my vehicle was at the dealer about 2 weeks), however, now instead of noise i get vibration at the 25-30 mph interval, and yes it seems to go away once the vehicle heats up, but I am not sure it totally goes away because when I drive my 2017 honda civic sport it seems smooth compared to the genesis. I guess my concern is that the genesis gets better warmed up but there is still some vibration. I am thinking of asking for the propeller shaft or shafts (2?) to be replaced, would this solve the issue? any thoughts?

I’m in the exact same position. Noise is gone but the vibration is still very much there. It doesn’t always get better after warming up either. I’m going back to the dealer when I have some time. We’ll see what they’ll come up with.

I hope everyone here has done their part in reporting this to Hyundai. This is a defect on their part.

I have driven approx 3k miles since replacement. Also, top speed of 105 mph to see if any issues at higher speeds. Give me to this afternoon to find paperwork and download. My service rep stated that all that is needed to find out what repairs were performed on another Hyundai is the VIN# and dealership name and then your dealer can search database. I can PM you my information. BTW_ before replacing the driveshaft assembly the fluttering noise was there every morning until the car warmed up. Fluttering noise gone.
