  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

flutter @ 25-30mph

One more try,
I got it this time and looking at it gives me more insight. There’s not enough flexibility at the connection points could be the problem. When I get the old one back I will have it checked. I plan on keeping this car for a while if possible. Thanks

Keep us posted! I am curious to see if it helps. How many miles and is your car a v6 or a v8? Thanks Kraig.

dboz1031...

I started a new thread about the flat spotted tire / vibration theory. Look it up. It is not your torque converter.

You may have tires that cause vibration (mine do) but it's not the source of the 29mph issue all of us here are dealing with. It is absolutely in the rear driveshaft. I disconnected it and the vibration is gone.

I am 99% convinced it's the flexible coupler on the back of the trans. Yesterday I swapped that coupler for another used one and the vibration was cut in half. I believe the coupler takes a set when parked overnight (worse the colder it is) and it takes a few miles to 'loosen' it up and then the problem goes away. I also believe this is why replacing the dirveshaft may fix it for a while but it eventually comes back.

I am starting to think (uh, oh... conspiracy theory...) this is one of those 'dirty little secrets' the automotive industry doesn't want to talk about. How on earth could something so common on these cars not be dealt with by Hyundai? They've replaced owners driveshafts, tires, transmissions, transfer cases and rear ends and (eventually) none of these fixes seem permanent. One other thing to contribute is the rubber center bearing support. The used driveshaft I purchased, the center support has sagged considerably, creating more of an angle between the shaft and output flange on the trans. This bends the coupler even more so the flexing during a rotation is amplified.

I've got calls out to manufacturers SGF (who makes our coupler) and Dana Spicer but no one's in a hurry to get back. I'm guessing they won't.
Yes I’m getting very frustrated. I had a fluttering noise and got drive shaft replaced and now no fluttering noise but have vibration. They installed another drive shaft and still have vibration.

There is a fluttering sound that I hear between 25-30mph and I cannot determine where it is coming from. It doesn't seem to be in the cabin. From my limited 'testing', it only happens when decelerating gradually (either coasting or braking lightly). Once I push the gas pedal, the sound goes away even at the same speed. Step off the gas, the sound comes back.

I believe I have seen other threads where this is mentioned. Has anyone else noticed this? Is there a remedy? It's driving me (and consequently my wife) crazy.
Just live with it. It is not a safety concern. The fix is to replace the drive shaft assembly - however that only replaces the flutter with a vibration at about 28 mph, goes away after about 10 minutes of driving. So not worth the hassle.

If I understand you correctly you only have this issue until you have driven for a few miles? What type of tires do you have on the car?

Show you dealership this. It is the TSB

It is NOT the tires, typically they will do alignment, force balance, tell you a wheel is bent etc etc. While some of these issues may actually be a problem, they have nothing to do with the flutter. It is a poor driveshaft design.

It is a problem that has no permanent fix. Nothing to do with the tires. Just live with the flutter, or if you’ve had the driveshaft assy replaced, the vibration. I try to avoid driving at 28 mph for the first 10 minutes or so, then it goes away. Otherwise the car is great so I’ve learned to live with it.

I have to agree. I was in for service last week and the dealership manager straight up said that it's a thing with the car and it ain't going away. No one has any "trouble" from it, other than the annoyance. And it is certainly an annoyance. But, as someone said earlier, just turn up the radio a little and it goes away :-)
As for the other service I needed, it was a long-ish list. They replaced the brake light housing on the back window because the rubber trim had come unstuck (others have had this as well), they replaced the tubing from the washer fluid reservoir because a couple were leaking, and they removed and reinstalled the windscreen because it had come unglued on the driver's side and was leaking water and whistling at 65 MPH. Everything was covered under warranty, so that was nice.

I just got my vehicle back after a month at the dealer (took long due to covid) for the vibration, and they didn't do anything, its still there. will have to live with it. It does go away after driving a few minutes. Maybe I should have bought the Avalon for a smooth ride, naaa we like the Genesis looks and sporty drive way more.

I got a new Sonata as a loaner while my car was at the dealer and while it had most of the electronic whistles and bells of my 2016 Genesis, it was loud (especially engine noise with acceleration) and much less plush. Our Toyota Camry is comfortable but also much noisier. I've gotten spoiled. One thing I would change on the Genesis is the steering feel. It's just a bit vague, though its better in sport mode. Has anyone hacked the system so you can get the firmer steering and handling of sport mode while retaining the economy (not that it's very economical) of normal mode? I'm sure all this is better on later editions...

That one has nothing to do with mine. Mine is a 5.0 and rwd
It appears that way, as it says it's for 2015-2016 models. However, the flowchart indicates cars made until Feb 2020 -

Does Sport Mode change anything in the steering? I always thought it just changes the shift points to have faster acceleration.

Theoretically it tightenes the steering as well.

Update. I fixed my driveshaft vibration. I made my drive shaft angles 0 degrees on both shafts. Another tech here had some longer bolts and spacers ( from a bh genesis) for carriers bearing and I notice if you use an impact on the Rubbers insulators it twists them. So I loosened the back and tightened then with wrenches but held the bolt stationary and tightened the nut and the rubber didn’t twist. The vibration is gone now. I have a 2015 5.0.

Can you report that to Hyundai USA, They couldnt fix it and you did, maybe they need to hire you in their engineering dept. How close are you to Atlanta Georgia ?.
