G80 Sport - discoloration of the dark chrome trim around the doors

I just got my GV80 on the 3rd of September and I'm a very vigilant person. What I noticed as soon as they brought it out from detail was water spots and sticker goo from the shipping plastic and sticker covers. I pointed it out immediately and had them fix it. I also took it back again to have them wax it and remove more water spots from the grill.

What is happening is that sticker goo is getting rubbed into the trimming and on the glossy door pillars. On top of that the detailers are rushing while using hard water to wash the car but not drying it properly. ALWAYS ask them when you're having your vehicle serviced or delivered new to make sure they dry it properly or do not detail it at all. In the case of a new purchase/delivery, request that they do not add any dealer advertising stickers on your vehicle. It is YOURS you have the right to that request. If they do put it on, it is potentially going to peel or damage the pain in someway when you ask them to remove it. I make this request on every vehicle I had since the 1st one i ever bought and ran into that problem.

In short,

1. don't let them detail your car at any point whether its during servicing or a new purchase if they aren't going to dry it properly and let it sit there wet while they work or its waiting for pick up.

2. Don't allow any stickers or have them removed and the goo cleaned with goo remover for vehicles immediately.

Both will damage your paint, trim and black glossy window pillars.

after much research and frustration with you all, I found the fix:

Ordered this stuff from Amazon- arrived this morning, Just tested 30 minutes ago- paper towel- hand buff on- rub off- waited 30 minutes before posting and still perfect where I tested, not a spot or stain to be found. So I'm going to do the rest of the car, this will save us from the dealer frustrations, screw em. Post your success story and love looking at your 3.3T again

If you want chrome colored trim that's great!

The trim around the windows on my '18 G80 sport were replaced in October 2019 at 10k miles .....23 months later, they'll be replace again at 28k miles. I have an appointment set up for tomorrow morning.

Someone needs to start a class action lawsuit. This affects both various Genesis models as well as Kia Stingers. What are we all going to do once out of warranty...and how long is the warranty on these parts? 3/36? 5/60? What then? Pay $2k + for something that may last a year or two at best?

Did the dealer have to remove interior door panels or other parts to replace the trim? Just trying to figure out what the dealer may potentially honk up replacing trim pieces causing a whole new issue.

I am not sure but I will find out. I am going back tomorrow to get one of the trim pieces replaced again. There was a slight ding in a trim piece. I asked them to replace it and they ordered the part on the spot. They called today to let know the replacement trim piece has arrived.

To my untrained eye the new pieces look just like rahjelli's polished pieces from the previous page. His don't look any lighter or "chromier" than the new factory pieces pictured above.

I think the new trims have sort of matte finish to them where buffed off trims look glossy.

I removed the oxidation from one of the trims with oven cleaner before taking the car in for the trim replacement. It's not bad. But when I compared it to my undamaged trim piece it was bit glossy.

If I still have the car out of warranty, I know what I am going to do...

Polish the trims or do a chrome delete. It is still a really nice car. Replacing the trim would cost 3k and you would need to do it every few years.

I notice that the dark chrome trim around the doors starting to discolor. I see spots everywhere on the chrome. Pieces started to look like it was from a 15 year old car.

Is anyone is having this issue? This is a WTF moment.

Personal call for all.

I myself chose to polish the chrome. Is there a difference? Yup. Is it really noticeable that it is different? At least to me, not really. Does it look a lot better? Again, to me, it looks 100% better.

Again, to each their own. For me, one of the main reasons I polished mine was after reading that many had already replaced the trim multiple times. Other than the trim, my ride is pretty much perfect. I didn't want to chance any new issues coming up with the installation of the new trim nor did I want to have to go through the same process multiple times.

Now, if they ever get their act together and come up with new trim pieces that don't discolor, I would probably get it replaced (if it was covered by warranty).

But again, I understand both sides and can not blame anyone for the choice that they made.

Just took my G70 3.3 in to dealer for the same issue. The chrome around door windows was peeling off and flaking. It seems the chrome is covered with a clear tape of some type and underneath is the actual chrome spotless. The tape should of had been removed by factory. They agreed to replace all the chrome with new chrome under warranty.

Anyone having wind noise issue after the window trim replacement on driver side? I am hearing slight wind noise on the driver side when I go over 50 miles. The trim around driver side front window seems tightly installed. Can't figure out where it's coming from. Going back to dealer tomorrow to replace a newly replaced dinged trim piece. Just wanted to find out if anyone else experienced this issue.

Hey team.

I have a 2018 G80 Sport, black with the copper/bronze and I have the same trim spotting/discoloration issues.

My car is just out of warranty, so no free replacement for me, but after some internet sleuthing I came across this YouTube video of this person using BarKeepers on his Supra plastics and it seems to work for him.

I decided to try this on my trim and it also worked well for me.

Originally I diluted the BK solution and applied very little pressure but eventually went to full strength and some medium pressure and it does work well.

Yes, it left fine scratches on the trim but the tradeoff was a complete removal of the waterspots and a more evening of the color and would take this over the way it looked before any day.

I did mask the paint as I do imagine it would put fine scratches in the paint and I also had filtered water there to wash off the solution no more than 60 seconds after applying.

The backend section by the quarter window took about 5 minutes so doing this to all the trim on the car would likely take no more than an hour tops.

I started with the small area and moved on after seeing how well it worked and will be doing so to the rest of the car.

The main unknown is how long it will last or if water spots will reappear immediately but so far so good.

I'd like to not repeat the process too frequently as I don't want this to polish to chrome but as of now it looks leaps and bounds better!

That's a far more abrasive product than the Meguiar's polish from a few pages ago! It's like liquid sandpaper.

The Meguiar's wouldn't have left any scratches at all.

Also, Any Oven cleaner would have left no scratches. When Genesis agreed to replace the trims and I was waiting for trims to come in I tried Easy off oven cleaner to test it out in one portion of a trim. I masked the surrounding areas and simply wiped it off with a cotton ball soaked with oven cleaner. Required no rubbing at all. Discolored top coatings simply melted away leaving less darker and little shiny chrome behind. Just rinsed off the oven cleaner and polished with Meguiar's Ultimate polish afterwards.
