  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

G80 Sport - discoloration of the dark chrome trim around the doors

Hey Dareck.

Replaced under warranty?

If so, how many miles do you have?

Correct. They were replaced under warranty.
First time, 2 years ago at ~14K miles and now, for the 2nd. at ~30K miles.

The biggest issue I have right now is that FOR WHATEVER REASON there must have been a tech in my backseat as BOTH small rear corner windows had their tint removed and nobody can tell me who or why it was done + I found a large beach towel size shop towel out-stretched over my rear-passenger seat. So this will be a to be continued moment...
I've had all of the exterior window trim replaced twice on my 2018 G80 3.3T sport. All car windows except windshield had tinted film installed at delivery on the interior side of the window (including the rear "portal" windows). There is no need/reason to remove the window tinting or window to install the new window trim.

Your dealer messed up. Tell them to put the car back to how you left it with them.

Post #241 shows the rear most window trim is replaced with the rear most window glass. This is the same for the G70 and the G80. The trim is not removable and reusable from the glass. Your dealer is tinting your new glass before you take delivery of the vehicle. Good for your dealer doing this, as most would likely not.

In the interest of keeping this very long string going, my dealer just replaced the trim under warranty for my 2019 G80 Sport with 18100 miles (second owner). It looks fantastic! But now it appears I’ll have to play the waiting game until I start seeing the spots again. Oh well. If so I’ll head back to the dealer while still under warranty. Or I may just end up just using the Meguiars instead. I sure wish the brain trust at Hyundai would figure this out after 4 years of the same problem occurring! Other than this cosmetic annoyance I can safely say I’ve enjoyed driving this car more than any other I’ve owned over the past 35 years.

well, I had all my trims replaced twice and some trims three times. All I can recommend is to wash the car by hand and park the car in a garage as much as you can. It's sad that's what I ended up doing.

I had my G80 in for warranty trim replacement at Beans Hyundai here in PA and they simply polished the dark off and left it bright. They said that's what Genesis said is the proper and only repair.

It's going to be fun fighting this.

Yes, definitely. My dealer basically said they are required to perform this process, but know for a fact it’s not going to work and will end up ordering the replacement trim.

I sure hope you sit down w/ the Service Mgr and go over this thread showing all of us that have had them replaced under warranty and some more than 1 or 2 times.

Best of luck.

To remove by polishing the dark coating off changes the look of the vehicle. Genesis ought to know better. It’s their POS coating issue. On my G70 if they did that it would mismatch door handles and the grill as well. That’s no good.

2020 G80 with copper trim has the same problem with deteriorating window trim finish.

Question: has anybody with a 2019 had any issues with the trim? Sounds like no, but wanted to confirm. Also, for anybody who replaced their 2018 trim, has there been any further issues?
I have trouble with my chrome around my windows. I have a white 2019 G80 with rose gold trim and no matter what I do the trimming always fade. Genesis told me that they no longer replace them and this was 2 months after I bought the car brand new.

I was just about to post a message asking how to clean the trim, as my 2020 g80 sport has the same issue -
deteriorating window trim finish. Seems like a very common issue, unfortunately, which sucks. Based on the threads I've seen, and how lousy the Genesis dealers are in this area, I think I'm just going to leave it as is, and maybe see if there's some sort of cleaner that will help.

I just had my 2018 Sport done a month ago. They've had to replace 2 pieces twice. This is the Hyundai dealership in St. Cloud, MN.

Mine (2018 G70) is set for replacement next Monday for all the Window trim pieces.

Based on my experience with my 2018 G80 Sport ...
The discoloration cannot be removed. The issue is the "bronze" coating/lacquer has worn away. You could buff out all of the remaining coating/lacquer to make the trim consistent. Not an acceptable/feasible option in my opinion.

I've had all of the window trim replaced twice (covered by warranty) since buying the car new in Feb 2018. I waxed and ceramic coated the window trim, but it eventually re-discolored. The last replacement. ~1 year ago, is not getting discolored. I did not regularly wax or ceramic coat the latest trim.

My hypothesis is:
H1) Only some of the G80 Sport trim is susceptible to this discoloration (bad factory/production run). I got lucky in my last trim replacement.
H2) Adding protectant (wax, ceramic coating) to the window trim causes/exacerbates the discoloration.

2019*** 2018 doesn't exist, ha

Stopped by local Genesis "stealer" last week. There was a used 2018 G80 Sport (35K miles) on the lot for sale. The window trim chrome looked too shiny. Upon closer inspection the dealer/seller had buffed out the lacquer coating specific to the Sport model. It was obvious looking at the edges of the chrome trim.

My 2018 G80 Sport has had the window trim replaced multiple times due to this discoloration.. I'm out of 5 year/50K mile warranty (at ~56K miles) and my window trim is again noticeably discolored. 8( I'm pondering buffing out or re-lacquering with spray/hand paint. Both will be time consuming and likely not produce result that I would be happy with. I've got an old piece of pitted trim in the garage. When I get time I may test both methods above.

my 18 sport trim is discolored but i try just to not think of it...you cant really notice it if you're a stranger to the car and dont know its an issue or unless your're a car guy and looking closely. 99% of the population will never notice...i plan on just living with mine how it is.
