  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hello, I am new to the forum and I am looking to buy a Genesis. I will try to make this quick. The are certain things in a car I just do not want and will never use, like panoramic roof, Hud, lane keep assist, adaptive cruise, and some others (not to say they are not great, just not for me). Ok, so things I do want, V6 (hate the new trend of tiny 4 bangers with a turbo thrown on them), AWD, bigger car (big guy don't want tiny car), quality, more refined/awesome looks but to old for ricer looks or over the top sports car looks, decent sound system (I'm no super audiophile). Ok, so with that giving you some idea of what I want I have decided on the base model or the signature model. The ONLY thing the signature gives me that I would want is HID headlights and cooled seats, but then I am stuck with the glass roof. I know the 2016 will have LED DRL'S and come standard with HID'S, so UNLESS I could get an extremely huge discount off a base 2015 I guess I would be smart to wait for the 2016 base model. Well, in a nut shell I want to know if you feel the base model Genesis is in and of itself still a great car or just an ok car for the money?? I just need a little guidance here, thanks.
ps: I would only buy black/black AWD (not that that matters)

You should be able to find some good deals on all trims of 2015's right now

Yes, but is the Genesis "base" model a great car that is worth the money?
That is the question I am trying to get help with.

I would say yes; but question is does it fit your needs for tech features, more power, etc? What other cars are you comparing with?

if u don't want sunroof then get the base. the sunroof ia the key attribute in the signature package.

the 2015 genesis is really all about the body styling. they really nailed it with a very manly, masculine well proportioned styling. I can't see any angle that looks bad with this car.

this is a mans car, not a bitchy girly lexus. a lot of critics say this genesis is a copy of many cars but imo it's styling has much more identity than lexus and infiniti. when u see this sleek long, broad shouldered, angular car coming down the street with that snouty snarling yet calm demeanored grille, slanted calm headlight eyes, u know it the genesis.

The last time that I was able to place a bona fide custom order*** for a car was in 1990 - It was pure heaven.

Add-ons like the sun roofs are just added money for the company - but, as the many posts on this forum show - they are nothing but grief.

*** by custom order, I mean item by item choice - not "packages", "trim levels", or other such marketing terms.

I have a base model and it gives me everything that I want in my car. I wanted the less tech that I could get; didn't want a rolling infotainment system. It has nav and backup camera that is essential in this body style.

My suggestion is to find a Hyundai dealer that will let you have an "all day" test drive of a base model. Hyundai swaps cars between dealerships to find you the color and option package that you want if there are any available.

As you said it would probably benefit you to wait and see what the 2016 will offer. I’m sure there will be left over 2015’s even if you have to travel a little for it. It won’t be that long now till the 2016’s are out and it’s worth the time to wait.

I know you stated you don't like all the tech stuff, but you should drive one of the upper models with the HUD (Heads Up Display). This feature alone is worth the extra money. It is a safety feature that keeps your eyes on the road. While mine was in for recall work they gave me a lower model without it and I must say, it was greatly missed.

Sounds like OP wants a Base Trim model. It looks to me like on the V6 there is a $11K difference between the Base and Ultimate Trim levels (the only one with HUD). That is a lot of money for a HUD.

This car has so many needed safety features on the upper trim, I don't see the point in just driving the box. That's just my opinion

I don't need them. A lot of people spend so much time playing with the gadgets, that they become a safety liability in themselves.

There is no need to play with anything in the Genesis - nor are they "gadgets". The extra safety features are very well thought out, useful and non-intrusive. That said, they don't take the place of being vigilant behind the wheel - but for those times when I might miss something, I gladly appreciate the extra help!

the base genesis isn't just a BOX. it has the same structure and crash scores as the more expensive packages. it's a hell of a bargain for what it offers!

There is no need to play, but people end up playing anyway. I am not just talking about the "safety" features, but also the other high-tech features included.

For people who always drive the same car, there may some advantage to the safety features. But people who drive different cars, or drive rental cars on business or vacation, could develop bad habits that are not automatically addressed by the other cars they drive. There is no electronic substitute IMO for always turning one's head to look in the blind spot before changing lanes.

Being able to check one;s speed occasionally on the instrument panel without loosing track of the road ahead is a learned skill. If one has a HUD, that skill may not be learned properly, or one may loose their practice in looking at the instruments without undue danger. Then when driving a car without the HUD feature, does the risk actually increase over not having HUD in the first place?

It will be interesting to see if the safety features actually result in fewer accidents. The insurance companies will eventually tell us that because they keep stats on that sort of stuff.

Sorry - but I disagree. We have 5 cars in the house and I drive them all and have no issues transitioning. However, I do miss the extra safety features like the HUD and BSD when driving the other cars. These features make me an even safer driver as no one is on their game 100% of the time. As I said, they are no substitute for driver awareness, but technology marches on and the features in the Genesis are additional aids to help the driver be even more aware of both their own vehicle and those around them. Hopefully, all cars will offer them as standard equipment moving forward.

Since I only drive about 5,000 - 6,000 miles per year these days, and I keep cars more than 5 years, I will be OK with those features when the manufacturer warranty on those items is for 10 years or 100K miles. Otherwise, I don't want them.

I test drove a base model before doing the same with the Signature I leased.
The base model is outstanding and has features that are options in other brands.
I think it is a marketing error name it "base"
A base Accord is one thing and a base Genesis is another.
Of course the line improves all the way up, always at a price.
Same happens with MB BMW and Lexus.
Each "layer" has a price.
This spectrum is there for the buyers decision.

No one said you did - but the benefits should not be discounted as they are real and very useful!
