  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Since the Coupe was first announced, I have hoped that it would become the next great roadcourse (track) beater. I just joined the forum today to start my research.

If you go to any track event (SCCA, NASA or clubs) you will see me and many other drivers in modified Porsche 944s. It's a 20 year old car that wasn't very popular when new, but they're on mechanical life support because they are rear wheel drive, CHEAP, balanced and have great aftermarket support. There are two amateur race series' (944 Cup and Spec 944) featuring huge fields of these cars. A 944 race car, fully prepped, can be had for under $7,000. That's what's keeping them on track. The only viable alternative out there is the Miata, and that's just too cramped for some people.

I'm hoping that the 2.0 Coupe becomes the next Miata / 944 as used prices fall. It's probably a bit overweight, but very tunable. The aftermarket needs to step it up. I've read some of the analysis of the car's suspension and the travel issues in the front are scary. But when you prep a car for track use, you go with spring rates that make 2-3" of travel plenty.

Has anyone proposed forming a subforum here focused solely on racing / tracking ?

that sounds pretty inexpensive. what does a track prepped car include?----does it include steel braided brake hoses, hans unit, full roll cage, racing seats, firm suspension?---what else?

To be legal, it will have a cage, harness (no HANS) and fire bottle. If it's decently prepped it will have a fully stripped interior, rock hard suspension with solid bushings, and two or three sets of wheels and tires. The problem with a 944 race car is that it will need a lot of repairs.
