  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Genesis G70 Reviews

What was your impressions on how the 330i compared to the G70?
Well, that’s tough because they’re obviously in the same class, yet such different vehicles. I’ll stay away from styling since that’s so subjective.

G70’s suspension is generally tuned more towards comfort, but seems to become unsettled at speed more so than the 3er. The 3 series has significantly less body roll and, with its setup, a little more predictable at the limits. The G70 provides some isolation that makes broken pavement and potholes more bearable.

On the inside, while the G70 has a very elegant, but simple, layout, the BMW is very functional. Surprisingly, the futuristic digital dash is easy to read and use.The HVAC controls are a little wonky; maybe I’m just used to the G70 controls. Seems like BMW used buttons where it could have used knobs. Seats in the 3 series are absolutely fantastic feeling. They don’t have the luxurious stitching pattern used in the Genesis — BMW goes for a sporting look and feel here.

BMW’s ace in the hole is its drivetrain. I drove only the new 4 banger, but I’ve driven some of their inline 6 engines in recent years as well. The new 330i is rated at 255 hp, I believe, but they’re sandbagging on the numbers here. That thing has to be making 275 hp at the crank. And the throttle mapping and transmission tuning are spot on.

One area where BMW does not beat out the G70 is in steering feel and feedback. If it does, it’s not by much. Neither car’s electric boost does much to provide much road feel. The new 3 series is improved over the last generation, though. That one was bad.

Assuming the BMW is better in some (maybe most?) areas of performance and handling, is it the better value? Probably not. Most of the 330i models, as optioned, will be in the $50k and up range, and most M340i examples will be north of $60k. That’s a lot, especially if, like me, you aren’t trying to impress people with the badge on the trunk lid.

But it is incredibly fun to drive

The most important attribute to me. How would you rate the fun to drive on a scale of 1-10 for the G70 3.3T and 330i?

I’ve got to reserve 9 and 10 for the old, pre-electric steering days when cars would commonly under 3,000 lbs and had the best manual transmissions that automotive history had to offer.

That said, these two cars are different kinds of fun. The 3.3TT has great power and acts more like a burly, muscular cruiser that is just OK in corner carving. Less than perfect transmission tuning brings the score down a bit to 7.5.

The 330i is not, by any means, a drag racer. It’s a 4 cylinder. A very good one, but still a 4 banger. That helps lighten the load which, in combination with great suspension setup and transmission tuning, makes this car oodles of fun in the corners. I’ll give it an 8.

Both are fun cars. Some drivers would probably reverse the scores depending on priorities. I happen to like great handling over power.

Edit: A modern day Mazda MX-5 Miata would probably rank a 9 on my fun scale. That gives you some perspective on my idea of “fun”. A 1960s Shelby Cobra is probably a 10, but I’ll have to wait until the day I get to drive one before I know for sure!

^^ Great description. I value the overall driving feel of a car vs. outright acceleration. My one wish is that G70 felt faster than it does. It's fast for sure but doesn't feel as fast as it is... Maybe exhaust makes that feeling come more alive?

Another owner who sold his dynamic 3.3T because of lack of dealer support in his area. Genesis and dealer networks, please get your act together. It's becoming a joke that we still don't have dedicated dealers and service 3 years after its launch.

To be honest, isn’t this The US Hyundai dealerships fault?
When Genesis wanted to create stand-alone exclusive dealerships, the existing Hyundai dealers sued and the compromise situation is what’s causing this piss poor experience for some!

Yes, but its not like Genesis didnt know how dealerships in the US work. Its like they closed their eyes and hoped for the best instead of having an actual realistic plan to split the brand from existing Hyundai resulting in lawsuits and the current mess

Have you considered that this was the only possible strategy. Although we don’t know what else might have been tried and rejected.

They did have a plan. The lawsuit originated because Hyundai had no choice but to sell the G80 and G90 in Hyundai dealerships for a couple years until they had their planned 100-strong Genesis-exclusive dealership network set up. This is how all the other Asian luxury brands like Lexus, Infiniti, and Acura set themselves up.

Problem is that the Hyundai dealers took this to court because they didn't want to let go of the vehicles. Now they're being even more greedy and refuse to build the separate facilities for Genesis. There's a whole other thread on this, because I don't want to derail this one:

Hyundai dealers try to sue Genesis from opening stand-alone facilities.... again

Thanks for the video link. I'm confused though - he must have known how far away the dealer was when he bought the car. Was he just expecting that they would be building another one close to him in the near future???

Can’t compare to the Japanese brands. They were three decades ago!
Most mass market dealers are not people that like cars or care about customer service. They’re just folks in it to make money by any means necessary.
I mean what other industry has so many shitty owner/operators?

Thanks for the link; Im gonna give it a read and see whats up

I think he mentioned that the one nearby where his dad bought 2 prior genesis vehicles no longer will sell/service Genesis vehicles. And of course the nearest one that's more than an hour away has provided bad service. So maybe he thought the good dealer would eventually provide service for Genesis vehicles.

My GXM told me they have 2 years to have a dedicated dealership built. Not sure exactly when that is from but yeah - time to get the show on the road. This is in Canada

That observed fuel range.... how....
That's what the math says (if you want to run the tank dry), but I hear you. I've never come close to that many miles on a tank, although I haven't taken it on a trip of more than 230 miles yet.

I barely get 200 miles to the tank 😂

yeah, must be a theoretical range. avg mpg * tank volume = theoretical range. but nobody except for Kramer in that Seinfeld episode would actually do that. i'm doing a road trip in a couple weeks. curious to see what my real world range is. anything 560km+ (350mi+) would be great. might even touch 600kms if the grades are slight enough...and if the wife can keep my speeds in check.

i recall getting ~800kms (~500mi) to a tank in my g37s on a road trip when my gas light just came on - i loved the range of that thing. sucked to pay the fuel up, but not having to stop was sweet.
