  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

GV70 2.5 rear end noise

What's curious is that in that text message, it says 4WD Torque converter. What does 4WD have to do with the torque converter?
None that I'm aware of. (Example, Truck specs show same part number for 2wd vs 4wd )

For what it may be worth, our 2015 3.8 RWD Ultimate Sedan had the rear differential replaced under warranty due to a whistling noise at medium speeds while accelerating and coasting. I could play a tune on it, and in fact did just that for the technician.. The differential may be a totally different part by now in the new GV70s, but, may be a continuing rear end issue. That has been the only relevant mechanical issue for an otherwise beautiful car.
Did diff replacement fix the issue?

Replacing a rear diff will not correct a problem with the tq converter or vice versa.

So I have noticed the “ whistle “ sound. I probably would not really be concerned at all except for the posts here on the forum. I know ( at least in the past ) that some cars had harmonic distortions ( Sounds ) that occured at certain speeds.
Anyway I plan a 2500 mile road trip in mid October .

Does anyone know if there are complete failures of the differential from this issue ?

I do not know of any reported on this forum
If it makes you more comfortable have the dealer check the fluid condition and if needed do a drain and refill.

new update: after our dealer called last week and said our 3rd differential would arrive TODAY and they spoke with Genesis directly, well they called today and guess what, we got bumped once again, this will be the 4th time we have been told the diff will be here and then to find out, it went elsewhere. They said 8-10 more days, my wife and i just know we will be bumped again, currently our vehicle has been sitting at the dealers for over a month and a half and will be almost
2 months next week. That will mean our gv70 has been sitting at the dealers longer than we have been able to use it.

There is no words to describe this… what a monumental failure of brand ownership.
Just simply unreal…

Did they give you a loaner all this time? I surely hope so.

Depending on your state you may have a lemon law claim.

Well, add me to the list! I noticed a whining sound coming from the back end when I'm between 40-80 KM/h and I press lightly on the accelerator. This is a July 2023 built 2.5T Prestige with only 1,100 KM on it! Calling the service manager tomorrow but I guess we now begin the long wait for parts!

I think every one of these vehicles has the problem.

Well, I have to say I was impressed with my dealer (South Edmonton Genesis). I figured I'd have to fight over whether or not they could hear the noise - it's very subtle and I wouldn't have noticed it if I didn't read these posts, but it's definitely there - after driving for about 20 minutes. They responded to me this morning and said there may be a recall coming from Genesis for the differential as well (the previous note told me they were doing this for some torque converters). They were very familiar with the issue and booked an appointment (will pick up my car and drop off a loaner) on Friday. They said even if they don't hear the problem, they can tell by just looking at the fluid in the diff. Hopefully they can get parts in a reasonable amount of time!

Has Genesis found the "Cause", replacing the part will just lead to another replacement down the road?

That's the big question! Since the first one went almost immediately after 1,100 KM, I would expect to find out pretty quickly!

Update - Genesis service did show up on time with a GV80 3.5T loaner (which was dirty inside and had a cracked windshield) and took my vehicle in to look at the rear diff. They called me about 3 hours later and said they did hear the noise and confirmed the rear diff needed to be replaced and mentioned again that they recommended to Genesis Canada that a recall needs to be issued. They are backordered, of course, but thought I would get a part in about 2 weeks. We'll see. They said I could take my car back and drive it safely until the part came in, which would take only about 2 hours to replace.

I offered to drive the GV80 back to them so I could try it out. I didn't really like it that much. Slightly bigger and heavier, which makes the ride slightly better but the 22" wheels balance that with a fairly harsh ride and a bit of a hum on the highway. Definitely don't like the infotainment controls and I actually didn't like the full digital dash like I thought I would...the graphics don't seem to be quite high resolution enough for my taste. I was happy to get mine back!

I will update when I get the part in. So far, I do feel like I'm getting good service!

2022 GV70 2.5T owner hear with the same dreaded rear hum.

Unforturnately I have the rear hum from 45 to 55 unless letting off the accelerator. Mine is a 22 2.5T Advanced with 5200 miles mfg in March 22. I plan on asking my service dept to replace it when I they take it in for the 7500 mile maintenance. So far it does not cause any issues except for the hum. Hope Genesis comes up with a better replacement differential.
