If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hard shift in 2017 G80

I was thinking the same as TinsleyC. With 99,000 miles you would have to be the first owner to still be covered under the warranty.
I’m the second owner I read here that it only goes for the first owner

Yes the first owner had a 5yr/60,000 mile bumper to bumper warranty and a 10yr/100,000 mile powertrain warranty from the date of purchase. The second owner is covered under the 5yr/60,000 mile bumper to bumper warranty that the original owner had. It is passed on to the second owner. So at 60,000 miles you were no longer covered under the manufacturer's warranty

oh man it’s gonna cost me a lot I guess ,do you think 🤔 if get a used one from eBay that will cost around 1000$ From a genesis that had 30000 miles or other one with 12000 miles or better to get a new one that will cost over 4000$ I’m really confused and thanks for ur help

The $1000 trans definitely sounds better than $4000. But what guarantee do you have that it’s not defective? Do your homework. I would check several dealerships as well as several local transmission shops. As they will give you some type of guarantee if they install it. While it might be more than $1000, it will probably be less than $4000. You definitely don’t want to buy a trans, pay for it to be installed only to find out it’s defective. So take your time and explore your options. That way you’ll make the best decision possible.

Keep me posted.

I am having problems with my 2017 3.8 AWD G80.

Transmission shifts erratically when shifting from 2nd to 3rd gear. It shifts fine when pressing on the gas (say, like when speeding up quickly), but when I take my foot off the gas, and the car is to shift from 2nd to 3rd, the transmission sort of 'hangs' and will not shift to 3rd immediately. RPM goes up, followed by a very bumpy shift to 3rd.

This happens more often in city driving, especially when driving uphill or downhill when I do not put constant pressure on the accelerator.

Just another data point. Mine (G80 3.8 AWD) seems to have a slight delayed upshift from 2-3 and 4-5. Only overtly noticable under light acceleration i.e. slowing down to take a corner around 20mph then accel.
I also notice it with ACC on in stop/go traffic.

Oddly I only notice it in standard drive mode, not eco or sport in similar driving style. Seems like the difference in programming might hide it in those modes.

Funny (depe nding on your perpective) is that I drove the car for a week prior to buying it and didn't notice it happening until after it signed the dotted line :)

I'm tempted to take it to my reputable transmission shop and have them diagnose it for me before I venture into dealer-land.
This is almost identical to what I am experiencing now. Same car.

I too have a 2017 g80 that’s doing the exact same thing. Hard shift from 2 to 3 and 4 to 5. Dealer had it for two weeks with no loaner. I had to borrow a car and it is worse than it was before I took it to them. There should be a recall on these transmissions. If anyone has had the same issue that has been resolved please post it.
Same issue here. Dealership is trying to process a replacement claim.

The dealership shouldn’t have a problem with the replacement claim if your car is still under warranty. You can go to post # 17 on this thread and download the technical service bulletin. The dealership should have it but just in case it might be a good idea to print it and take it to them

So, I just sold my 2020 F150 with a 10 speed transmission for this same issue. I was looking at a 2017/18 5.0 G80 but now am a little weary. It looks like everyone here that’s had this issue has the 3.8, but is that because there are so few 5.0s in comparison, or because the 5.0 is not affected? For the F150, there was a similar issue. The 2.7 engine was most effected, but also is their most popular engine. Some theorized it was the torque difference of the engines affecting the transmission, others just a coincidence. Interested in your thoughts and if anyone knows a percentage of these being effected.
Thanks!

I have no idea of the percentage. I will say that I have a 2018 G80 with the 3.8 and no transmission problems at all. I'm at a little over 33K miles.

I replaced the transmission on my genesis sedan 3.8L AWD 2015 after 200,000 miles when I started to get transmission problems other than that was very solid

Well the % is high enough that there is a TSB that directs the shop to replace the transmission. I guess that cost (replacement + install) is lower than tearing it apart and fixing it OR the replacement transmission is necessary because there isn't a solution.

I also vote for torque converter issue potentially causing the hard shift. It could also be a TCM problem

Interesting feedback, thanks for the replies. And agreed on some of the guesses. At least Hyundai has released a TSB, Ford has basically told everyone to pound sand. They do the resetting adaptive tables thing and flush them and that’s it. Funny thing is, the 10R80 is also used by GM and they’re not having any issues. My vote is definitely programming and torque converter lock up issues. Software issue causing hardware symptoms.

Did you get this resolved?

Yes, my 2017 G80 was doing the same thing. 2nd owner, 37500 miles, awd. Conicelli Genesis is replacing the transmission. Located in norristown pa. No questions asked. They have replaced several 17 G80’s transmissions. Apparently replacement fixes the problem. Hope this helps. Mike
Conicelli replaced the trans in my 2017 3.8 last week. Same exact issue.

I had taken my car to the dealership, they checked it and although my TCM was having the latest software update, I asked them to reflash the TCM with the software and it worked! No more hard shifts 90% of the time!
