  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hyundai spinning off Genesis into Luxury brand

My only change from your picks would be to substitute the Genesis Coupe for something upmarket of the Equus.

Honestly I'd probably choose differently than an upmarket Equus if it were my choice to make. My only reason for including it on the list was because of rumblings I read somewhere where a Hyundai exec was indicating that there was room in the market of such a vehicle.

No, ... you should tel them its a 2015 Genesis 3.8 Sedan! ... Afterall, ... its says so right one the trunk, Genesis on the left, 3.8 AWD on the right!

Actually, it's "HTRAC 3.8" on the right :)

Well, I happen to remember very well when the Acura and Lexus brands arrived, Acura arrived first and had all of the Honda winds behind it's sail. The Legend was beautiful! Lexus showed up a year later, but used the Alpha numerical naming convention as did Mercedes, BMW, Audi, etc. The Lexus brand caught on and surpassed Acura, even though the LS400 didn't look nearly as good as the Legend! Everybody knows both Honda and Toyota were both tops in engineering and reliability, ...so why did the less attractive LS400 go around the more beautiful Legend? ... It's because they styled it to look like a Benz, and used a trick to stamp the Lexus brand in your mind!

It's because they used Alpha numericals! By using Alpha numerals instead of a name, it forces you to place attention on the "Brand" as opposed to the "Model". While the "Legend" model was hot, ... the "Lexus" brand, became hot! That circled "L" emblem and the brand "Lexus" became chic! People knew the Legend model, but no so much the Acura brand. Conversely, EVERBODY knew the "Lexus" brand, but could care less about the Ls400, Sc300/400, etc model names. "Hey, you hear Bob just bought a new Lexus!!?" ... So, there is very good reason to use the numerical model names when you are trying to get traction for a new "brand", and I'm glad Hyundai/Genesis is not making the mistake out the box that Honda/Acura made. Nissan/Infiniti avoided Honda's mistake as well .

Well Stew I remember when the Legend was introduced as well (or at least thought I did, more on that in a moment), and so I went searching for sales figures for Acura vs Lexus. The best I could do was this Motor Trend article which lists the best-sellers from each year through the year 2010:

http://wot.motortrend.com/mt-acura-celebrates-25-years-complete-acura-lexus-sales-figures-inside-63859.html

So it turns out that any Acura's sedan's best years were with the TL from 2004-2007, where every year it surpassed the Legend's best numbers (looks down at feet in shame :o).

Now before you do that victory lap :), it wasn't until the 1998 ES that the best-selling Lexus outsold the best-selling Acura, a time when both brands had vehicles on the market for at least 9 years.

So um.. maybe I'm just fondly remembering how good-looking and sexy the Legend was, especially in Coupe form (in red, please) and remembering how memorable it was (and I say this as a person who owned a 2004 TL!)

I think the point is that Legend is now the RLX and the Vigor/TL/TSX is now the TLX.

When the Acura was first released for MY 1986, Honda had superior engineering/reliability over all automakers. I remember a car magazine tested a Honda in those days, and said it was the first car ever tested that could idle indefinitely without overheating (which any car can do today).

Still have my 99 TL. 194k and still running strong.

I'm an old Honda enthusiast as well. I bought 5 new Honda Preludes (All Red) in a row from '85 -'92. I think we are agreeing more or less. I said the Legend was most beautiful, but the bloated looking Lexus LS did more for establishing it's Mfr as a luxury contender because it put the focus on the brand rather than the model. I never liked the Lexus designs, and still don't, ... but Acura seems to have just mailed it in design -wise lately! :(

More info about Honda's glory days that coincided with the first Acura Legend released for MY 1986 (and also the 1986 Honda Accord LXi which I purchased in the fall of 1985):

Honda supplied its engines to six consecutive Formula One constructor champions (two with Williams 1986–87 and four with McLaren 1988–91), as well as five consecutive driver championships (one by Nelson Piquet in 1987, three by Ayrton Senna in 1988, 1990 and 1991, and one by Alain Prost in 1989).

That's a pretty solid point right there. I never thought about this...

I was driving a 1989 Legend (Gen1) up until just a few years ago.

I bought it in 2002 with only 29K and drove until 2013 with no problems, sold if for almost what I paid for it.

I was behind a 93 (Gen2) a few weeks ago that looked brand new, I followed him in the parking lot of Home Depot to compliment him on how clean it was.

Unfortunately, this is also a way for them to increase prices and nudge people out of the market. Myself included. I hope I'm wrong. To me hyundai has always been about outstanding value. I hope they don't lose that.

I don't think Hyundai WANTS to nudge people out of the market but they're definitely driven to compete with the best in the business - which unfortunately (for us) means that some of us aren't going to be able to afford the products. I'm sure Genesis automobiles will be somewhat of a bargain in the beginning but that's not going to last forever. HOWEVER - Hyundai products, in general, have become so good that many of us who can not afford "Genesis" vehicles will be plenty happy with "Hyundai" vehicles. Honestly, we really can't expect "Genesis" to compete with brands like Mercedes and Lexus without charging enough for them to earn the revenue it takes to afford the research and development to stay on top.

Yep, I believe it is highly likely that prices will increase. I'm okay with that, to a point...

There's also a broad range in prices even now. A base model genesis is 40k. Not everyone needs or wants a 5.0 Ultimate at closer to 60k. Or the Equus. With a 300 series competitor coming, it sounds like there will be that lower cost option too.

I think Hyundai will do what Lexus did and introduce their first Genesis products priced very competitively. Once a few years go by that will change and pricing will align more closely with brands like Lexus and Infiniti. My guess is the Genesis G90 and G80 will cost a little more than they do as Hyundais. For example - you're not going to get a brand new Genesis G80 for $37k with Signature package. $42k will probably be rock bottom - and that's not exactly a bad price either. $37k is ridiculous.

I personally feel like this is Christmas early, to hear "Genesis" will be it's own luxury brand. My wife and I love our 2015 Genesis 3.8 Ultimate. We traded in our Infiniti M35 for this, and ... "gulp", ... It was more than just a notion in doing so! We looked at a comparable Infiniti Q70 with an MSRP of $54K. Our Genesis' MSRP was $52K, but had many options the Q70 did not have. I wasn't too keen on buying a model that was nearing it's generation's end, only to have a new model drop 1 year after you step into it, as well. There were several other things that tilted me toward the Genesis, but I must admit ... That ugly crooked "H" on the back was almost a deal breaker! I knew the car was going to be great, ... and I sold my wife on the same, ... but it was very difficult to accept that "H" and it's baggage! I ordered the Genesis Wing emblem the day I agreed to trade. As I said, Knowing Genesis will be it's own brand, is like an early Christmas gift! :)

Great find! Thank you!

I feel the same as you. I'm so proud of Hyundai! My 2015 looks just like yours - white with tinted windows. What a car, huh?! I feel like I bought into Hyundai at just the right time. I'm so anxious to see where Genesis Motors goes...

The signature package is currently 43,600.
