  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I forgot how poorly my Genesis is in the Snow...

"Bit the Bullet" today and put on a new set of Continental Extreme Contact DWS tires. With the 200 lbs. in the trunk and these new tires, the problem is solved! I have traction with the Genesis that I never thought was possible. First time in 3 years! --- I may look at buying another RWD Genesis again and forego the AWD in 2015.:)

I took the Genny out on some errands yesterday (OEM Conti tires). We've had some rain and snow that left the side streets packed and slippery. Yes, I could spin the wheels easily. No, I didn't have any trouble getting around------just had to drive a little slower (especially when getting ready to turn or approaching an intersection). I purposely stopped on a slight incline to see how hard it would be to get moving again. With slight throttle, it moved out-----slow but sure.

I still would like to get a set of wheels and Blizzacks or the Michelin tires, but I'm not sure its worth the $1600.

Well, I would highly recommend the Conti Extreme Contact DWS. Not sure if you have these, but these are all I need. It lets me fore-go the hassle of mounting tires twice a year and storing wheels and tires somewhere.

If these are not the type of Conti's you have, check out their reviews on-line. They fit the bill!

My experiences so far this winter in Wisconsin with my 2012 5.0 sedan with the original Michelin tires (4000 miles) were surprisingly good in up to 4" -5" of snow we have had in a single event. No extra weight in the trunk.

With care, I have no problems getting around at all, I expected worse.

I remember growing up when front wheel drive didn't exist. If the snow gets too deep and above the bottom pan, I would use another vehicle until roads are plowed.

I considered storing it for the winter, but I suspect this will be necessary as I live in a municipality with decent snow removal capabilities. If I lived in a rural area! I might look at this differently.

With all due respect, the Genesis is really a nice car. The poster knows rear wheel drive cars. So why are we talking about this at all. I could say " When it snows it is slippery when driving". No crap . Come on, this is a waste . " Oh my Genesis burns the tires when I floor it". Really , oh when its raining my wheels spin at full throttle .ITS REAR WHEEL DRIVE.Its Great. Lets end this. The proper tires for the existing weather conditions---Right.We all are so fortunate to have such a wonderful car, at such a great cost.7i bigblock.

Its all about the tires! I live in Buffalo NY and I take the Bridgestones off for the winter and put on GoodYear Ultra Grip Ice Winter tires all around, nitrogen filled and my 09' Gennie moves thru the snow like a tank. What I like best about these tires is that they are smooth on the dry surface. I drive from Buffalo to Florida during the winter months and getting through the snowy mountains of Pennsylvania and W.Virginia are a true test. The investment is well worth it!

Relax, perhaps?

Everybody's perspective is different, and some people live in climates that make tire choices difficult once in a great while. So we should enjoy the freedom to post what's on our mind as much as we enjoy our great car.

What kind of Michelins do you have?

...So, let me get this right, you drive your winter tires in Florida? How long do you stay in Florida?..

Only 10 days in Florida over Christmas and New Years. The temps during this time is only a high of 81 degrees. As you may know the rubber on the snow tires are softer than all season tires subjecting them to accelerated wear if driven in hotter 90 degree temps.

Maybe because I'm in Canada I'm biased, but using all season tires in temps like they are now in Minnesota just does not add up to the best idea for safety.
As far as I know winter tires are not just for snow and/or ice but anytime temps are constantly at or below 7C(45F) which would be from November to March.
If you think the Conti DWS has traction compared to a winter tire in -17C(1F) temps you are totally mistaken.
The opposite would be true using a dedicated winter tire in Florida when it's 81F, but given a choice I'd use the winters in Florida for a few days over the DWS in Minnesota for the whole winter.

I never said that the Conti's had traction like a winter tire. Re-read my posts.

With that said, I have used all season tires in Minnesota for the last 25 years. You have to know how to drive. Most of the accidents I see are 4 wheel drive vehicles that are driving too fast for conditions.

I know what you wrote, but also keep in mind that if you haven't used a winter tire in 25 years you are missing out. Cars have evolved and so have tires. It's a hassle having to switch twice a year (less so if mounted on rims) but even a good driver like yourself can benefit from a proper set of tires in the winter. I change my own, takes less than an hour in my driveway including washing. We change our footwear based on season, why not the tires on our cars?
You are right about some 4 wheel drive vehicles, they are often the first in the ditch. 4WD sometimes gives a false sense of security which ultimately comes down to..(you guessed it)...tires.

The rubber on 'snow' tires will wear faster at temps well below 90F.

Ok, but he did get new tires which are better in the snow--right. That is what I said to begin with. A good decision was made ,glad no one got hurt in the interim.

I am driving third day in the snow after we got 5-6" from Saturday and Sunday snow storm.
Slow speed, manual mode, two bags of pebbles in the trunk, Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3 tires. I don't have any complaints.

PS
Yeah! My 100s' post.

Cool! How do you like the Michelin PS-3s in general??

These AS 3 tires are great. They are quiet. I have few roads with new asphalt on my way to work and back home. I can barely hear them.
