  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

intermittent starting issues

I have a 2009 Genny V6 sedan with about 82K. Owned since 2012. Love the car.

A few months ago the problem began and I can't figure out why or what is causing it. I did a search but didn't find anything related to my issue. Maybe I missed something during the search. any help would be appreciated.

I hope to describe the issue effective:
The car sometimes doesn't start when pushing the "start/stop" button. All the dashboard lights will light up and the steering wheel will move into 'driving' position but the engine wont turn over...nothing at all. It's like the brake pedal isn't pushed in. push the button again and everything turns off. Push a third time and then the engine may start. (sometimes not - repeat procedure). Push the brake harder, hold the start/stop button longer. All of these do not seem to affect the issue.

As the few weeks go by, the problem began to be more common. and recently it is just about every time I try to start the car. The car battery was replaced about a year ago. I've changed the battery in the remote keys, tried both sets of keys, and even installed the key fob in the dash-holder before starting. The same intermittent starting issue would happen no matter what I try differently.

I wonder if a button on the brake pedal (to tell the car the brake has been engaged) is not making good contact. It appears the remote is talking to the car but the starter or brake pedal is not communicating as it should. Or is there something else I'm missing?

Has anyone had experienced the same/similar situation?

Thanks.
Yes my 2012 genesis sedan 3.8 is doing a similar issue and it won't start but right as I push the start /stop button and brake pedal the lights flash on the instrament cluster and the everything stops and 8 get nothing but complete power loss from everything and I'm at a huge loss as to why this is happening.

NJTom, whatever became of your intermittent starting issues? How did it get resolved?
I am having the same issue on 2015 3.8 Genesis ultimate AWD.
thanks
I'm still having the issue.

I am having and have had the same issue that the OP described with my 2013 3.8 Sedan. Every time I take the car in on extended warranty, they cant reproduce the issue, of course. I have another year left on the warranty but they literally give me the same run around at 3 different dealers in a couple hour radius. Start button, brake switch, and sensors have either been tested or replaced. Any ideas so I don't have to get rid of this amazing car?
I have no idea what is the cause of not starting and I really need help since I got my car it's been a lot of extra money on top of the purchase price just to fix the transfer of title and registration from fraudulent issues I was not aware of and then it turns out there had been an odometer rollback that I was unaware of so there ended up being over 200k miles on it but the odometer says 130k miles and the front a arm bushings are completely worn out and digging in to my frame and I have no way to fix this and I'm also having a not starting issue. Please everybody if you can I really don't know what I'm going to do and my car I love my car but I'm stuck where I'm going to have to non op it or sell it to a junk yard or find a helping hand so to speak so if anyone can and will help me with these 2 things I will be forever grateful and I will even cook you a nice juicy bone in ribeye steak and not to brag but I can cook a screaming ribeye steak that's to die for.

Most likely starter motor is bad. Similar thing happened to me with newer Genesis with less miles.
Push button, nothing. Wait a minute, then push again, it would start. It happened a few times, then eventually didn't start at all.
That sounds just like mine ,only problem is I have no more money and I can't even borrow that much and I lost my husband last may due to ALS DESEASE and he took care of me and he was the only one bringing anything in to pay for the bills cause I'm disabled and SSD keeps denying me so I'm strapped s9 need another options.

I am having the same problem on my 2015 Genesis
I’m having the exacta same issue NJTOM has described so well. My airbag warning light has recently started to stay on after starting. I plan to replace the clock spring shortly and see if the issues are related?

Im having some similar issues with my 2015 3.8. Most times when i get in to start it it will fire up without much issue, but on occasion it will crank but wont fire up. I have had it to the dealer 3 times for the same issue and they have yet to be able to replicate it. she has about 118k miles and I'm getting reluctant to drive it.

Update…..I replaced the clock Spring ( Part Geeks $35 free shipping plus Labor at local shop $165) for $200 and the Air Bag light is now off. I also got a BONUS Surprise as my tilt wheel now raises as designed when car turned off AND the car has started with no issue since the repair was made 2 weeks ago. Once again this car is amazing after 15+ years!
NOTE: I‘ve started to pump my brakes pedal twice before hitting the start button to both turn the car on AND OFF.

I am having the same type issue. Just bought a 2013 3.8 for my Son. When I push the start button sometimes it starts sometimes nothing. I didn’t hear any click from start relay when it wouldn’t start so we replaced the start relay. Worked great all day then started the issue again. My thought is that it may be the brake light switch. When it’s not working I do not hear the start relay click so I’m thinking it’s not starter or battery. Any thoughts, cautions or advice on continuing? Thanks

When it won't start, push and hold the start button for over ten seconds. If it now starts, then the brake switch may be the correct guess. Edit: Doesn't work on this generation.

I tried that a couple of minutes ago after reading through some of these threads. The car starts right now but I tried the bypass a couple times without pushing on the brake. I tried twice, once pushing the button once and holding it for over a minute with no start. I tied again by pushing button once to get into accessory mode then a second time and holding it down for one minute. Again with no start. I checked battery and it is at 12.5 volts. Thanks for your reply.

Okay, I guess that feature is not in your car's generation. Sorry for misleading on that.
