  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Is it difficult for others, when trying to jump start another car, trying to hook up jumper cable to the Positive + side of the battery ? It takes forever trying to get a good, solid connection on the Genesis positive anode ? Why did Hyundai think this was the easiest way to hook it up, as opposed to the negative - post which is easy ? Is there another jumper cable that is easier to use than the ordinary ones sold at auto parts stores ?

On my genny, the access points for jump starting are under the hood on the passenger side. They are marked + and -. The plus terminal is under the large plastic housing next to the firewall and the negative terminal is under a little plastic dust cap on top of the fender - use a small screwdriver to pop it up.

But, that's for jump starting the genesis - not sure about using it as a donor car, if that's what you're thinking. Try it.

I'll jump start a vehicle with my truck ('01 F150), but have refrained from doing so with any of the last few cars I've owned. I'm not inclined to risk the ECU and other electronics to the voltage feedback that can occur when the other vehicle fires up. The risk is slight, but the cost can be heavy.

I carry one of these instead - http://www.amazon.com/Jump-N-Carry-JNC300XL-Ultraportable-Starter-Light/dp/B000XQ9MGE/ref=pd_sim_sbs_263_3?ie=UTF8&dpID=41d1HJPj9bL&dpSrc=sims&preST=_AC_UL160_SR160%2C160_&refRID=0V4A0AXX2VT1WFC31ZM8

I know that if I were jump starting the Genesis, that's where they are, but the battery is in the trunk, and I have to use that to jump start another car using the Genesis as the donor car.

The front terminals would probably work - just think of it as a long set of jumper cables. The battery is in a godawful location for jumper cable access.

As far as the risk factor, one of the lesser known functions of a car battery is to act as a voltage stabilizer. If starting a car - even another one - damaged the electronics, we would have wholesale computer failures.

I jump started my boy's car yesterday using the under hood terminal. Any jumper cable should fit fine.

Good to hear. Another consideration is that since your genny is the donor car (the assisting vehicle), the engine is supposed to be running. Therefore any current from the alternator would go directly to the front terminals also.

+1. Risky stuff on these computer controlled cars. I carry a small booster pack in the trunk also. Like this. http://www.topspeed.com/cars/car-news/noco-gb30-genius-boosttopspeed-tested-ar166908.html

Some of you may want to read this article. http://www.mynrma.com.au/get-involved/advocacy/news/why-you-shouldnt-jumpstart-a-modern-car.htm

The "Genius" booster looks interesting - so I just ordered a GB40 from Amazon - I love that sort of thing. I got more tools than some dealers.

The NRMA article reads like a stock market advisory - lots of scare & short on hard engineering knowledge.

Imagine this scenario. You go to someplace warm for 3 weeks during the winter. You come back home. Your battery is half depleted due to parasitic drain. You start the car up. The first thing that happens is massive battery drain necessary to start a cold engine in the winter. The second thing is that the alternator is working overtime to charge a half depleted battery.

Do the electronics get fried? Of course not. I was an engineer for many decades in my former life. You design for this sort of thing. And the battery is a stabilizing device just like a large capacitor.

Now of course, if you're the type who doesn't know + from -, blah blah blah, then that's a different story altogether. Don't even think about jump starting a car.

The "Genius" is still just another way of jump starting a car.

It is however there is protection built in. You cannot connect it backward. It needs to see power on the battery being boosted before it will allow the transfer of power this means never a spark when connecting the clamps. You can actually clamp the positive and negative together and noting will happen. If there is no power as in a completely dead battery then you will need to override this safety function in order for the unit to work. There are other features built in also which make it safer to use as opposed to the old fashion jump start.

I have some big diesels in my boat so I preordered this monster to keep on board just in case. https://no.co/gb150
