  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Just traded 2010 BMW 535i for Genesis S460

There is an interesting items in the August Car and Driver. It compares the Audi A6 3.0T to a 2011 BMW 535i and a 2011 Infinity M37. They seem to prefer the Audi. In the same issue they also do a 40,000 mile review of their 2009 Genesis 4.6, it interesting comparing the performance numbers of the Genesis to the above three much more expensive automobiles.

I've always liked the BMW, except for the previous model but I have never understood the red instrument lighting. The philosophy confuses me and I think it should have been dropped years ago.

That article is getting beaten to death on the BMW forums. Mostly due to people's concerns over steering input.

I don't think BMW has anything to worry about from the Audi, it has such a rock solid reputation.

Audi is a serious player. It used to be perceived as a second tier European brand. Selling AWD as the panacea. Kinda like Volvo selling crash worthiness as the sole reason to buy a car. I really like Audi interiors, and I think they have some amazing designs (S5). At the end of the day, I can't get on board with Audi products. If I'm gonna spend that much dough, I'm more partial to buying a Benz or a Bimmer, but that's just my personal opinion.

I agree about Audi. I owned an S4 wagon that was a great car when it was not in the shop. I find them to be unreliable cars and Audi USA does not stand behind their products. I am not a fan of VW in general. BMW has gone down in reliability over the last few years but I did not have any issues with 3 out of the 4 BMW's I owned. The only car that gave me an issue was my 98 M3 and that was mostly just due the fact that those cars had higher ownership costs. One time I went make a right hand turn with the S4 and the turn stalk snapped in half. I love BMW's, best cars hands down and my favorite car was my e39 530i. The Genesis is a great car and nice replacement and is a great buy. Like it way better than Lexus.

I did not want to get involved in the BMW-Audi fight, but rather, wanted to emphasize the comparison with the 40,000 mile Genesis. This is what I wanted to send Car and Driver, only I have not been able to do it.

"On comparing the stats from this comparison to the long term test of the Genesis 4.6 in the same issue, it seems too bad you did not include a used 40,000 mile Genesis in this showdown. From 0 to 60, it was only .1 second slower that the fastest BMW (the new Genesis was faster than any), and dusted off the competition to 100 mph, being almost a second faster than the competition. And, while tying the 1/4 mile time with the fastest two cars, it was still at a higher speed (again, the new Genesis had the fastest time). Braking it would have come in third, but hey, it has 40,000 miles under its belt. Skid pad, well, it was equal to the BMW and only .02 gs below the winning Audi.

Drive train warranty would probably be better on the 40,000 mile Genesis.

And the kicker. Being a 40,000 mile Genesis, it would probably be $30-40,000 cheaper than the competition. Even the new Genesis would be significantly cheaper than the BMW-Audi.

Of course, stats aren't everything and doesn't include the subjective, but it is still interesting, and impressive."

By the way TJ Park/GatoMan..... Bring on some comments of that vehicle vs. the other vehicle after a little while experiencing the new machine. Of course, you can bypass handling comments... not that the Genesis could not be tweaked somewhat.

Soon. I will do a detailed version, as a preview here are the main differences:

All the things you wish you had on the Genesis, are on the 5 series. But at a massive premium:
Adjustable suspension/transmission
Xenon HID headlamps with automatic on/off highbeams
Heated steering wheel
Heads Up display
Fold Down Rear seats
Auto close trunk
Massaging/heated cooled seats both driver and passenger
Lane Departure Warning
Automatic Parallel Parking Feature
Concierge Service

Why would one want to bypass handling (and suspension) comments? It's part of the BMW and a big part of what a buyer is paying for. The don't claim it is the Ultimate Driving Machine for nothing.

Yes, that is exactly why I would'nt try and compare 535 handling to a Genesis.

I'd like to know more about the massaging seats.....

I'd like to know more about the massaging seats.....
It doesn't massage, like in a chair at home. It's a subtle rolling action on your arse, to keep the muscles from tiring out. I rarely use it since I don't go far, but on a long trip, I did use it once and it worked rather well. It's very subtle, but not as effective and on some Mercedes (of course those Merc cost 100K +).
