  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Low beam headlight adjustment

OK guys, Gen2 adjustment:
#1 Phillips driver with an 8" blade, like this

Now notice the white nylon "funnel" like device and the molding on the engine compartment cover with U and D next to the arrows.
Turn in the direction of the arrow to move the light in the desired direction.

This picture shows the half of the bevel gear set your screwdriver will mesh with and move.
The meshed driver will move the same thing the wrench on the backside will, but it is ever so much nicer to adjust with a long screwdriver.

Here is the driver meshed with the gear and ready to adjust the left side lamp.

d.jpg

And finally, the same thing for the right side adjustment

e.jpg

Firm pressure on the screwdriver and twist until the results are what you want. The molded direction arrows indicate to me at least, that this is the way the real techs at the dealership do it. No need to remove covers, air cleaner, or brace.

Everyone has been so helpful. 8in phillips, here I come.

Thanks.

Just adjust them a little bit at a time, and try out the new settings on the road a bit, before cranking them up all at once. I tried to set my high beams so they illuminated just below the horizon.

Thank You very much for taking the time to post this. This is why I support this forum as you get people like you helping others. Thank You MT-Genesis

Yeah - I now have a properly sized screwdriver for the job. The night I posted my message though - it would have taken me longer to go find the screwdriver than to just take the plastic off and do it the long way. :) So.... dealer's choice at this point.

Is this a definitive thing - that the 5.0 V8 has some sort of low beam automatic adjustment or leveling?

If so, I certainly can't see it functioning.

The sales sticker refers only to "HID auto" which I assume means auto on and off.
And the accessory listing by Hyundai that someone posted earlier refers only to "High beam assist" for the 5.0L, whatever that is.

The low beam light pattern on my car extends perhaps 50 ft in front of the car. The car would cover this distance in one second at only 30 mph - definitely not safe.

Been covered here multiple times...all HID lights have auto leveling. These don't do the start-up dance BMW's and others do, but they do self level. The HB assist is a function that allows the high beams to be optionally automatically tuned on and off based on oncoming cars.

Or the first generation Genesis! Love my dancing headlights!! :-)

My headlights don't dance, or show any other signs of movement, which is why I was skeptical as to whether or not I even had one of these little auto-leveling gems on my 5.0.

Turns out that way back when, Moderator described the operation of that system on the Gen1's as being load sensitive rather that dynamic in nature, and speculated that the Gen2's would function likewise.

Turns out he was right as usual. My shop manual, usually trash, has a detailed explanation of the Gen2 leveling system, which is, in fact, load sensitive.

Behind each rear quarter panel, directly above the tire, there sits a load sensor which corresponds to each headlight ass'y. Truly weird looking things. So, unless you suddenly dump an awful lot of weight in your back seat or trunk, you are unlikely to see any sort of dynamic light show.

Are you sure that's a #1?? I couldn't get my long-bladed (about 10") #1 to engage the teeth on the adjustment wheel. The screw driver was definitely long enough and I could feel the blade (or even see it on the driver's side) fit into one of the slots, but turning the screwdriver just resulted in the toothed wheel moving a bit then springing right back where it was.

The 8mm socket did a good job on the driver's side, but my arms aren't skinny enough to get into the passenger's side even after taking the cowling apart.

You'll need an extension and a swivel. Sorry if I omitted that from my post.

I think you did mention that swivel and extension was needed.

How long was the extension you used?

Thanks

At least 8 inches... might have to put a couple of shorter ones together, and use your right hand to reach under & around the right-back corner of the airbox to guide the socket onto the nut. Unless you wanna pull the lower half of the airbox :)

Thank you SROBAK. My right hand and forearm are pretty torn up from reaching under & around the right-back corner of the airbox from trying to get an 8mm socket with a very short extension onto the nut. The nut was relatively easy to turn to raise the beam, but I went too far and now having trouble getting it turned the other way to lower it.

:(

Sorry - wasn't trying to get you hurt - lol. If you weren't a timezone away I'd offer to help...

Maybe it's time to recruit a skinny kid :)

And somebody said the job was easy.

My long long Phillips screwdriver had too thick of a shaft. So I used a socket wrench on the drivers side and a long long skinny flat blade screwdriver on the passenger side. It wasn't exactly what the designer had in mind, but it did allow me to raise and then lower a bit while retaining skin on my limbs.

Good Luck,

LeRoy

Can anybody confirm that the Phillips required to adjust the headlights is indeed a #1 vs a #2? After lowering my 2G I noticed light output is diminished so I am going to try to adjust them higher
