New Engine Warranty Replacement for 2009 Genesis V8

I took my 2009 Genesis V8 4.6L in for the TO# 14 Brake recall. They fixed that for me. I mentioned that I was getting a clack-clack-clack noise on start up. The dealership checked it out. I have 74,000 miles on it. They tried two fixes that Hyundai recommended. Still clack-clack-clack. They called Hyundai again, who told them to replace the engine under warranty. It is a $12,000 engine!

My car drives like it was new. Actually it always rode like it was new, just had the clack-clack-clack. I hope the new engine gets me another 74k miles.

In the newer versions of the 4.6 engine such as your replacement engine, Hyundai "may" have fixed the problem present in a lot of early 4.6 engines, but just in case they did not change anything, here is some advice:
Do not ever start the engine and shut it off right away before it has chance to at least partially warm up. This is especially important in cold weather or when the car is parked on a steep incline/decline. There are many posts in this forum about this causing problems in the early 4.6 engines. Also, after your first oil change, I would switch to 5W-30 or 0W-30 full synthetic oil, and your engine will likely last the life of your car next time.​

There was a design/manufacturing defect in the early engines that was not the fault of the owners. I described the situation as to when the problem occurs in my post above. I don't really know when it was fixed by Hyundai, but don't seem to hear about it on newer models.
 
Since Hyundai copied Ford designs, almost to the "T", the oil problem on quick start stop, was a issues (but not fatal like here) on Ford DOHC 4.6, SOHC 4.6 and SOHC 5.4 engine. The oil would do the same thing as indicated with the Hyundai threads. Letting the engine warm up ends the problem of the oil bunching up with the Fords. Unlike Hyundai, those engines did not fail premature and will run over 300-400k miles (as indicated by limousines, cabs, fleet, trucks) without any rebuild (maintained properly). The designs in question were for the years 2000 ending about 2005.

I am sure Hyundai fixed the issue. And they honored the customer with a factory rebuild. It may not be a new engine out of the crate. There have been reports that the 5.0 being replaced are not always new out of the box engines.
 
I would be seriously disappointed in a motor that would only last 74000 miles. You should expect over 200,000 miles on any engine these days.

The early Tau 4.6 had a design flaw. Everyone knows that. I am sure those that were affected are disappointed also.

The real problem is that some owners have incurred minor problems so far (that may get worse later), but not enough damage yet to get the engine replaced.

I was skeptical of Hyundai just like you. I wouldn't even look in the direction of this brand before BUT in these times...if your credit is shot due to the economy and can't get the car you drove before or want then this might be the car for you.

Nice backhanded compliment, especially for a first post. Rather than argue about how there are quite a few millionaires on this site who are former BMW and Mercedes owners, or how if this were an Audi, BMW, Mercedes or Lexus, he'd be paying for that engine out of pocket, rather than having it covered under warranty, I'll just ask you nicely to please go away. :rolleyes:

How did you get it repaired under warranty, my 4.6 died at 61k, they denied my claim.

Did you purchase new or used? Original owners get a 10 year - 100K mile extended warranty (in the USA) on the drivetrain. The normal warranty is 5 years - 60K miles for most other warranty issues (and is transferable to subsequent owners). If the Resale was a CPO (certified pre-owned) by a Hyundai dealer, then the 10 year - 100K mile warranty on the drivetrain is restored to new buyer.

But even if you fall within the warranty miles and years of ownership, you still have to prove that you followed the required engine maintenance to qualify for a warranty.

Not sure under which situation your warranty claim was denied.

Anyway, I have since been ordered off their lot and had to find a mechanic to replace the engine for me all cost for out of my pocket.

  1. Did you purchase new or used?
  2. If used, was it a CPO (certified pre-owned by a Hyundai dealer)?
 
Way more then 74k should be expected from the new engine. My 2011 4.6 has 193,000 miles on it and still runs and sounds like it did when new.
