  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Just found out Map N Soft is releasing a new map update around next month. If you were planning on upgrading, might want to wait.

How much does the upgrade cost at Hyundai for those who have done it in the past?

$200? $300?

Shahhere

Actual cost is $144, this is for DIS models which can only be performed by the dealer. Your dealer may charge you labor rates on top of this.

That's funny. I was recently looking at a 2012 Genesis with Tech package, and the salesman said, "the car automatically downloads any nav updates for free. No need to bring it in."
I had a feeling he was incorrect.

Not only are they NOT free but they are expensive and a major pain in the ass to install ...give the salesman the benefit of doubt and assume (at the least) he was ill informed. That's the least one might assume.

I think $150 would be the cost to you if HYUNDAI (mapnsoft) would sell it to you. If you have the DIS (the tech w the user wheel) system Hyundai will not sell the upgrade to you. Actually with all of the system crashes that occur while the upgrade is performed (including mine) I would never attempt this myself...imagine how inviting Hyundai would be if you tried to redeem the bricked radio after attempting this install at home. I like the idea of my built in GPS with the latest maps and electronics but it just isn't reality...GARMIN or SMARTPHONE is a better choice.

If you have a DIS, you can't do the update. Map N Soft wont sell the DVDs and/or the unlock keys to a consumer.

I paid $144. They didn't charge me labor, only actual cost of the upgrade.

Install takes insanely long. Plan on leaving it at the dealer the better part of the day.

Oh, what a car salesman won't say to make a sale!! Gawd, that's soooooo bad on his part. smh

Crazy. This should be free. Hmph.

Is there a way to find out what's in the upgrade? Or is it just upgrades maps?

If it was a DIS software upgrade Id pay happily in the hopes that they fixed some of the dorky menu structures.

Yeah it would be nice to know what was in it...

Which dorky IS menu structures? There is a firmware update for the DIS head unit and a related update for the amp/tuner module. This update is supposed to fix the intermittent "no audio at startup" issue some folks have and also corrects a bug on 2010-later head units that causes them to not remember one particular user setting (surround sound). The TSB implies one disk is all that is required; my dealer though says installing this TSB also clobbers the navigation software (they say it basically erases EVERYTHING) so the 3-disk nav programs and database install job, which takes 5-6 hours, has to be done as well. Think of it as re-installing a computer's operating system, then having to re-install the main program you run on that computer.

That first disk is basically the "audio" and "video" portions of the system. The 3-disk package is the navigation application/program and data. If only the 3-disk package is what is being changed (which is all that has to change for a Map-n-soft database update), then the majority of the menus will remain the same. MAYBE some nav menus will change too but I'd bet against it. Most of the menus are on the 1-disk firmware set... I'd bet the actual navigation menus are as well.

The TSB tells the dealers to either use a battery charger or run the engine to keep the battery voltage constant during the installs. Who wants their engine idling for most of a day?!?! My dealer said that's what they do because it's too easy to trip over battery charger wires and unknowingly disconnect them. So if I ever have these updates on my 2009 Tech it'll be at a different dealer - one advantage to living in SoCal. I have a few Hyundai dealerships within a half hour drive.

Yeah I requested them to connect a battery charger, and they did. Engine was not running on mine.

As far as the DVDs go, from what I saw there were 5 total; 2 system discs and 3 map discs. I could be wrong though.

I didn't lose any settings, though I was expecting to.

I asked the Map N Soft rep what this new update next month entailed, and she had no notes on it at all and couldn't tell me anything.

This may seem like a dumb question but I have a 2013 premium...do I need to do the update? It would seem that it would have the latest maps...

You never HAVE to do the update.

If you don't have the DIS joystick, I'm pretty sure you can download the latest Nav software and update yourself.

You also may be surprised that even though your car is new, the Nav software may be not current.

Thanks for the info...do I download from the car?

Doesn't look like an update for 2013 is available yet, per their website.

The MapnSoft update is for 2009-2012 Tech models (with DIS), and 2010 Premium (touch-screen):

Yeah, I find the map and directions on my Galaxy S3 to be much better and easier to use. I also don't like the way the DIS map loses so much detail as you zoom out. When you zoom out, it loses all but the interstate highways, as well as city names. Thus, I can't really tell where I am in relation to surrounding cities. Are there any settings to control this?

Interestingly, there is a city street here that I drive on that does not appear on the map, although that street has been there for about 4 or more years. This leads me to believe that the map on my 2012 is badly out of date.

The new update is still not right. Hopefully, the one being released is better. For example, I input "Jared" (the jewelry store). Despite finding one within 5 miles of my house, it finds one 245 miles away as the closest. It's been around for at least 5 years. And yes, I had the correct state selected.
