oil change indicator light or warning

Nothing in the manual seems to say how to reset your odometer to provide an indicator or light or message that declares it's time for an oil change.

I've seen the question asked on other threads, but the answers did not seem very definitive.

An old Buick had a button in the glove compartment to push to start the meter running towards the next oil change. Old Mercedes' call for a crazy sequence of button pushing while turning the ignition key off and on to rest the oil change reminder indicator.

Say it ain't so that we have no such oil change reminder indicators. I've got a 2011 Genesis V6.

Every one of my most recent cars had it from 2007 bmw to 2009 honda crv.

I was writing up a review on both bmw and hyundai but got side tracked. The hyundai genesis at first glance wow a bargain, once you dig deeper you find things missing

Still i knew those things going in so im good with it.

My last car and current (other) car both have oil change reminders. Pain in the butt annoyances. I use a calendar instead.

Now, Hyundai, plz take away my rain-sensor wipers.

Oil change indicators are for people who can't do math. Nothing but a PITA and IDK why cars even have them anymore.

Amen.

Change your oil and filter every 3K or three months and you will drive happily for a long as you own the car.

You will also get top dollar for your sale or trade if you keep your car up.

^ it will help with resale, and yes it will keep the engine in top shape.

However with new oils and engines, changing every 3k miles is excessive.if you follow hyundai manual for changes it will be perfectly fine 5-7k oil changes or once a year whatever comes first is all you need. The oils from 20 years ago put most in the 3k mindset with a ton of maint every 5-10k miles. Hell you even had to change plugs every 10-15k, now its 100k.

Ive seen and had enough blackstone tests run on previous cars to justify the above.

+1 IMHO it's way more annoying to have an electronic nanny bothering me. My old Accord had it and it was never set right because I changed my oil every 3-5k and it was set for a 7.5k interval. So it would just go off at random times and I'd just reset it to get the light to go away:o
 
If done right they can be a useful and money savings tool. My Pontiac, tracks things such as cold starts and mileage and outputs a % of Oil Life remaining. Makes it very easy to plan oil changes as I know where I stand and I'm not wasting my money on 3k miles oil changes. It probably goes 6-7k between changes. I must admit that's one thing I was a little disappointed with in the Genny.

On thing is for certain you guys are more opinionated then the bmw forms.

I know if im dead and wife gets genesis no way she will change the oil unless she is told to... hell she trashed a new car 10 years ago for not checking the oil. I was very concerned with my tturbo bmw and the 15-25k dummy oil change indicator.it was broke...25k for oil change and the service guy tells me thats when i should change it.still with the mixed synthetic they were saying 15k or one year. I would have paid every 7k if i had to. so 6 years later 7k oil changes.... i have nothing to show for it. Follow the manual keep an eye on the miles, and check the dip frequently.

Im just saying we all have valid points of view

One thing I hate about the oil change indicator in my BMW M is that it cannot be reset until it says it is needed. My M is a garage queen so I'm changing oil mostly due to boredom and time, not mileage. Even with the reset tool the oil change indicator cannot be reset until it gets to the yellow bar.

i brought my car in probably 5 times for the oil change indicator. on numerous times they reset it and it wasnt on yellow. there's also a proceedure on how to reset it ourselves on the bmw forums (never cared about the process but remember reading it). perhaps your M has different electronics then mine.

No way do I want to pay someone to turn off a light after I change the oil myself on a Genesis.
Not having that light is a great feature on the Genesis!
If you doubt the greatness of this feature, call a BMW dealer and ask them how much they charge to reset the maintenance indicator system on your 2012 760Li.
It will cost over $100 I'm betting.

Anyone that needs a reminder can program an alarm app on their phone to remind them a few times a year.
For someone who checks the oil level between oil changes, the color change of the oil will be a good reminder.

My 06 M5 had a sensor that determined the condition of the oil. I was able to reset it when ever I changed the oil no matter what color of the warning. If you don't drive your car much they require an oil change at least once a year. I think that goes for all car. Changing the oil before the reccomended milage is a waste of our diminishing oil reserves.
 
Mine is a 2000 M Roadster and I have a Peake reset unit that plugs into the round connector under the hood.

When I had a 2004 SAAB 9-3 Sport Sedan, the oil change indicator was one of the very well thought out systems that never failed to work with perfection. It was a 2.0 l low pressure turbo 4 cyl that took 6.5 liters of oil.
The oil life monitor tracked every engine parameter you could think of.
How many cold starts, warm starts, hot starts, engine load x time, time spent idling, start, stop, total engine run time, distance driven, engine operating temperatures during distance driven, temperature at shutdown.
The oil life monitor was never at a set date, or mileage. It literally fed off the exact data of how the engine was being run. They recommended oil changes at maximum mileage every 12,000 kms (7456 miles), but that could easily change to less based on how you drove the car.
It was brilliant!
Then I got a 2005 SAAB 9-5 which had a "dumb" system that only tabulated time (date) and distance driven (whichever came first). That car was a 2.3 L high output turbo and took 4.2 liters of oil (from the factory, it was set to 24,000 kms/15,000 miles) It was annoying to see the maintenance reminder turn on a week after getting an oil change because it was too dumb to know how the car was being driven.
I came to the conclusion that I'll never find another car that I like that will also have such a well thought out oil life system as the 2004 9-3 that I had.
So, I've come to terms with this. I'd rather track the oil life myself with no "dumb" reminder than have a reminder that's basically just taking wildcard guesses. Every engine now days has a sensor for every little thing, why can't all the manufacturers use the data from all those sensors to actually base the oil change intervals as they really should be (as it was on my 2004 SAAB)?
