  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Oil Change On 4.6 V8

The tau V8 has an upper and lower oil pan sections and when the Genesis is on ramps the oil cannot all drain out of the upper section of the oil pan, which is toward the rear of the car. You may be thinking that the lower part where the drain plug is located is the complete pan, however the rest of the pan is above and to the rear, hence the reason for the car needing to be level. If you look closely at the photo below you can see the upper oil pan section (silver) along the bottom of the block with the small lower (black) section attached to it.

Interesting on upper and lower pan...you could drain it on stands, empty what's in the lower part, lower the car back on wheels (with plug back in) to let oil from upper flow to lower then jack back up to get the rest

Just did a dealer oil change (2012 V8 4.6L Tau engine) and the dipstick shows about a Half inch over Full mark (when cold).
Is this Ok?

Probably. There is some allowance. If it was an inch or more I'd be concerned and drain some.

Too much oil can cause problems if the level is so high that the crankshaft is hitting it and causing it to foam up as air is mixed in. Does your engine use oil between changes? If so, it will level out.

Thanks for the response Ed! I remeasured just to make sure and it is actually about 3/8" so I can sleep better tonight :)
This is a great forum, I need to come back more often!

2009 Genesis 4.6. 80-90% highway. I cruise at 74mph, tach is just below 2000rpm and sometimes I get into the low 30’s mpg.* Change oil between 8 and 10k miles with mobile 1.

*going east in the southeast US, mpg is wind aided. Only get 28.5 or so on return trip.
