If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. Oil Consumption in '12 R-Spec

I called HMA and got a case #. Made an appointment for next Saturday to get the brake fluid recall done and ANOTHER oil consumption test at a different dealer. I'm going to bring some 5w-20 oil with me for them to use, if they will.

Thanks for update.

If I were you I would let them add/change oil with exactly what they use.
By you putting in oil that reduces oil consumption you are helping their case not yours.

Ditto...^

Ditto. IF they use conventional non synthetic...

Well I am starting the consumption test. Have a 2012 R-Spec built in June of 2011. Tried reading through the 33 pages of info on this thread. What I got out of it is that the first 5.0 seem to be the problems. Dealer stated they have never seen a Genny consume oil. Mine was their first. We will see how it goes.

Discovered the rspec I bought has this problem..... Its been only 1500 miles since a change and my level reads right at the L. Called dealer and they said they havnever had this issue in the car. Surprises me that the last guy did not notice this as I bought it at 27K miles...

This really sucks.

Dealers know about this... So does Hyundai.

If you know your genny is consuming oil, do the oil consumption test then open case with BBB

The only thing that would be a surprise is a used car salesman telling the truth (unless the truth happened to be an advantage).

Hey fellas. I am currently doing an oil consumption test. I was down about 1 qt per 1000 miles driven. The dealer stated they hadn't heard of the 2012 R-Specs burning oil. The tech involved with the oil consumption stated he has not seen this before on the R-Specs and has contacted Hyundai about it. He stated they haven't told him anything about what the problem could be.

Well, I stated to him, it is a known issue and Hyundai deffinitely knows about this. In addition, I stated the fix for this is an engine change out, which has been done quite a few time under Hyundai's advisement. I also added, the 2013s and 2014s don't have this issue.

finish the oil consumption test, how open case with HMA and open case with BBB

Case already opened with HMA. Gave case number to dealer.

Spoken to Hyundai about this, and told them this is a known issue and many people who purchased the earlier production series of the 2012 R-Specs are having excessive oil consumption.

Not once did they state anything about the rediculous auto industry claim about burning a quart of oil every 1000 miles is acceptable.

Bottom line, if you look at how many times I have to put oil in the car, I have already gone through about 10 quarts.

Thats an oil change and a half.

Don't feel alone ... Porsche's standard is one quart every 600 miles.

I wasn't in a hurry and got what I needed done. Only beef I have in hindsight is that I ended up with a shortblock as I presume many have. Either way, new engine pulls great and runs great otherwise. Oh, and it uses no oil.

Funny how the service writer and manager have never heard of this issue during "diagnosis". When picking up the car AFTER the replacement you hear more stories. Equus is problematic as well....

I got the BBB to come out on my side, and in hindsight cannot imagine them NOT coming in on my side. 1qt/1000K is crazy when explained in plain english to an arbitrator.

Still loving my genny. Oh, while getting work done I got to drive a 2015 5.0. My car is faster but that 2015 has a nicer interior (plus I liked the HUD and blindspot integration). That said, $55K is too rich in my opinion for a genny. I paid 41 for mine new....

Chris. Did they reset your odometer for the new engine? Was the engine new or rebuilt?

He said short block. Which means they have stopped putting in new crate engines (complete swap), and now he has a DEALER guys that did a rebuild. So, did they torque everything even? What did they miss that a robot built new engine would have not. The new engine has computer controlled build processes that dealer tech school grad (no offense) can not do...

For those early on.. Hyundai knew it was overall lower cost and they got the complete engine back for engineering, by replacing with a complete crate engine.

Also, they do not produce these engines anymore (except use some inventory for the last year of this first gen Equus)... The new. 5.0 is different. And lost power/slower.

Thanks for the clarification. I was always confused about long and short block. Seems like there is some risk in them replacing the engine. From the literature I have seen on the short block, the tech would have to replace a lot more parts to make the engine complete.

In an nutshell, we will be getting rebuilt engines.

What about BBB? You just want to skip that important part? Screw a short block...I want a crate motor period!

A manufacturer is under no legal obligation to provide a crate motor if the can repair the existing one to satisfy a warranty claim. From a post above, someone is speculating that Hyundai actually would prefer to use a crate motor if they had enough to go around, but my have used them all up (and they are not manufactured any more).
