Oil Drain Location on 2015 Genesis

I managed to complete a "top side only" oil change today on my 2015 3.8L. I finally got to use the mightyvac I got for Christmas.
I also got a stubby 27mm oil filter socket and a Chinese food take-out plastic tray to catch any drips from the filter housing.
While the mightyvac was doing its thing, I was able to remove the filter from the top side of the engine without losing a drop. Once the mightyvac was done with the oil pan, I used it to suck out the filter housing and the Chinese food catch pan.
The mightyvac was a champ and worked as advertised. The only spill I had was pouring the dirty oil from the mightyvac into the old oil jug. It was an easy pour but the wife started talking to me and I overflowed the jug. Should've known better...

You may already know this, but with my Mityvac, when the oil stops flowing I move the tube around a little (up and down) to make sure I get as much out as possible. I always get more out that way than with the drain plug.

Many of the European oils that have had anti wear additives like zinc and other material taken out, which come in mandated 0-20, I was told is not supported by Hyundai (good). The reason for removal of the life saving anti wear agents is due to environmental whacko terrorists in Europe never stopping at creating new rules to control people's lives. In this case, taking out great anti wear additives due to faux pollution issue.

I had heard that in the U.S., the Mobile One 0-20 created for Honda still had most of the anti wear ingredients. Not sure of this. Bet Mobile could answer that. Some have claimed that the "Molly" type oils for European cars would provide anti wear capability on a similar design as say M1 Extended drain, or Pennzoil Ultra, because they have as of yet banned anti wear agents. They come in 0-20.

No, but you can use Mobil 1 0W-20 in cold weather. In the US, there are two varieties of OW-20:

• Mobil 1 0W-20 Advanced Fuel Economy (AFE). There is also an OW-30 AFE.
• Mobil 1 0W-20 Extended Performance (EP)

The EP version is slightly more expensive, so you can make your own judgment about which is better.

My preference.. Factory recommendation of 5w-20. If you want to run 0w-20, please make sure it is US version with the anti wear agents in it.

There seems to be an awful lot of confusion about the location of the drain plug and oil filter on the 2015 Hyundai Genesis. Here are a bunch of answers. The oil filter is not on top (as it is with the Azera which I previously owned). It's on the bottom front covered by that drat shield which must be removed. The oil plug is about two feet behind the filter (behind another drat shield) which must also be removed. I got this info two ways: talking with the service mechanic and personal investigation. I'm sure these shields serve some aerodynamic purpose (lowers wind resistance) but they are still a pain. So I went to a lot of trouble to cut two removable and replaceable access panels. I installed two steel bars tapped for (4) 8-32 stainless screws behind each opening (four bars, 8 screws). Determining precisely where to locate these panels and installing them was hard and took a lot of time but I'm happy. I took photos of all this but am not smart enough to post them. (OK so now you know: I'm older than all of you. I used to be an AT&T networks systems engineer but still bumble around computers and smart phones though I like it all.) Prediction: within a year, the factory will come out with shields with access panels. Next, the Genesis and the Azera both have 3.8 engines but they are different engines. The reason that the Azera takes 5.5 quarts and the Genesis takes 7.23 quarts is because the Genesis has a oil cooler. Lastly, I love my 2015 Genesis 3.8 sedan.

2. The V8 oil/filter change procedure is even worse.

3. Before I bought my car, I was assured by the service manager that the oil filter was up front, and on top of the engine, as it is with my Sonata.

Gee, I do think dealers lie.

Yes, I am older than you. The dealer didn't lie. As is typical, he just didn't know where the oil filter was located. Ignorance is different from lying but is still inexcusable. If you don't know the answer, say you don't know the answer but will find out. My sales person was a woman and normally I would be suspicious of a female's technical knowledge, PC be dammed. I was totally wrong. She did know her stuff, never faltered when I asked tough questions.

Clue: I've been doing oil/filter changes for 60 yrs. - although, way back when, vehicles frequently didn't enjoy the luxury of having filters.

But, seriously, I was just making an educated guess - and I retired 20 yrs. ago.

When I had our oil changed at the dealer a couple of weeks ago the service manager apologized for the time they took to do the deed. (I didn't think they took too long) He said it was the first one they'd done and they had to figure out how to do it.

Chuck, Looked at the pictures on the link you attached. I would prefer to take my "H" off and put the Genny emblem on but don't know if it's easy to do. Did you do your own?

That is an understatement. There are many threads and thousands of posts on this subject going back to 2008, many with pics and/or videos. Use the search engine or Google search.

As long as it doesn't say European formula, or ESP, it will be the US version that meets Hyundai specifications (and of course exceeds them by a significant margin if it is a 0W-nn, since only synthetics come in that viscosity range).

The oil filter on the Genesis 3.8 from 2009-2011 was on top of the engine bay, toward the rear (center). When I say "on top" I mean exactly that, and there is no way to reach it from the bottom.

Thanks for the write up. I think the filter was designed to be changed from the top. Most dealers have oil evacuators, as do I, and use them to do the job quickly.

Anyone know the torque setting the filter? Written on it? Usually around 25-27 nm but I'm guessing until I find out.
