  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Post purchase price details here (US $ only)

Thanks so much for all the detail you put in your posts! I enjoyed reading every bit of it and will use it for when it's my turn. ;)

I cracked up reading from @Slowerthanslow saying "Trying to keep this as quick as possible " :grinlaugh:

Love the Adriatic Blue, nice choice!!!

The standard G70 build site is 2D:
Build your own Genesis. Select model colors and specs | Genesis USA

But the configurator is still 3D for me:
Genesis Website

Aha, somehow in all these months of checking out the G70 I never saw the 2D site!

It's funny, the one doodad I'd actually like to have -- the cargo tray -- was not on the car... maybe not available yet?

If you get a chance while looking at a G70 at a dealer, check out the "mudguards" ($70). Have to put them in quotes because they are so absurd. This car is already very close to the ground; there's no room for mudguards anyway... but my guess is the wholesale cost of those "mudguards", in these days of Chinese manufacturing, must be under $5.

I'm torn if I like the mudguard look or not. They're clearly useless though lol

Mine came with $55 mudguards--or something like that.
There are some with the cargo tray; some with first aid kits; and other variety of assorted items. These "extras" are, I think, on the car prior to arrival at the dealership. The dealer does tints (or tries to do tints), wheel locks, sometimes a funky "brake package" thing; some have had "leather protection" or other similar.
The mud guards are tiny--I think barely noticeable because mine is HG--not sure I would want them on a light car.

One more thing I'm going to toss out. For those of you younger than me (I'm 56, so that means all of you 🤓) or new to negotiating, I highly recommend a book called "How to Buy Your New Car for a Rock Bottom Price". Written for buyers by a former car salesperson.

I read this book in 1987 before I bought my first car. I was amazed at how the book described every single trick the dealer later used with me.
-- Offer you a Coke to make friends.
-- Salesperson and sales manager form tag team. Salesperson says "I'm on your side. Now let me see what I can do with the manager." Let you sit by yourself while the salesperson and manager chat about baseball in another room for a while. (One of the good pieces of advice in the book is to take a friend with you for the negotiation so that you're not left alone in this way for their psychological warfare.)
-- Later as you sit on your stop price (your pre-decided top price you'll pay) and they want another $200 from you, salesperson says, "Oh Bob, just drink two fewer Cokes each week this year and you can afford it." (The return of the Coke! Brilliant...)
-- Tell you there are lots of "extras" already on the car that cost hundreds of dollars, but which actually cost the dealer pennies. In my case in 1987 it was "Everybody wants pinstriping! Who wants a car without pinstriping?". Uh... Me?

More than that though, one of the things this book discusses, and which I think is very useful and valuable advice in life in general, is to look at things from the perspective of the salesperson. The book says basically: the salesperson's job is to screw customers over, and they use every psychological trick in the book to do this, and they spend their day talking to other salespeople and managers about their best techniques to do so... but... the salesperson is a person too, and no one likes to feel their job is to screw people over. Everyone (everyone who isn't a psychopath that is) wants to be liked and thought a decent person. So, as a customer, use this to your advantage. "I really like you a lot Dave, and I appreciate the time you've put into helping me. You're a great salesperson! I know you need to make a profit, and I want you to make a profit. I want you to stay in business and do well. But I just don't need those things, and I know what my budget is. So I hope we can work this out."

I can honestly say this $5 book has saved me many thousands of dollars over the years.

Out of print now but looks like used copies can be had for $2:

How to Buy Your New Car at a Rock-Bottom Price (Signet): Leslie R. Sachs: 9780451149619: Amazon.com: Books

So now that I'm at work (where I do nothing all day) I can update you all on the purchase!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Model: G70 3.3t Sport (duh)
Dealer: Allen Genesis of Laguna Niguel
MSRP: $50,690
Circle A Plan Price: $46,585.15
Conquest Discount: $1000
Money down: $1000 Deposit, $14k Cash/Credit card
Dealer add-ons: $500 (Negotiated) (Eck Bond & OEM All Weather Floor Mats)
Financing at 1.9% = $617/mo (or something like that)
The smile on this young man's face as his family is surprised by every feature he tells them about: $Priceless
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For starters, I have been after my car in this color since day 1 and I had put $1k as a deposit on the vehicle a few weeks ago with full intent of purchasing it the minute it showed up. I was up front with the dealer that I was going to bring in a Circle-A Certificate (THANK YOU @r_spec !!!) and they were fine with that. I worked directly with the GSM (Bessai Parmach) and he was helpful in explaining costs between lease options and financing.

So I found out the car was delivered Thursday (4/25) and went to go square everything away on Friday evening (4/26). We (dad, brother and I) drove up to the dealership and sat down to go over some of the money related details. As we spoke they brought the car out for us to take a peak. WOOOOW did that Adriatic Blue pop in the sunset light. I've always been a fan of the deep blue Mercedes-Benz has on their vehicles and this is even better IMO. The car still hadn't been washed, so we told them to go have it detailed because we intended on taking it home tonight and walked back in the office.

Some debates over buy/lease, mileage, and a quick conversation about "Eck Bond" later, we had some credit check forms signed and were almost ready to hit the finance office. After hearing about @Slowerthanslow 's experience with dealer add-on "doo-dads" I went in weary that they may try to charge me for some Lo-Jack related product before we entered the lot. Lo and behold, they informed me that it was $995 for some anti-theft product that they had "already installed and couldn't take off the car." I told em I don't need it, especially because Genesis Connected Services has a car locator function on it. We then got called to go over the car (in the dark, ugh) to check for scratches or interior issues and the GSM told me he could swap the Eck Bond for the anti-theft charge if I want. I let him know that I may consider the Eck Bond at a later date, but I don't want the anti-theft and he's going to have to take it off. Before we headed to the finance office, my dad remarked how he felt weird/something was wrong because there was no negotiations and everything was running so smooth/quickly with the Circle-A certificate. I simply told him, he's gotta trust me. I did all my research.

A few minutes later we're in the finance office to get this all squared away and the GSM went home for the day. Sat down and they showed us 4 packages and the impact on monthly cost. In each package besides the "bronze" (aka no package), they were happy to remove the anti-theft device charge. I went over the plethora of reasons why I didn't feel the charge was justified and the finance manager (Alex Hemphill) told me they were only making about $300 on the car and he was already staying late to get this squared away so he wouldn't take the charge off. I (fibbed a bit and) let the Alex know that the GSM indicated we could proceed without the anti-theft, he called the GSM, came back and said he could swap the Eck Bond for the anti-theft, but there was no money coming off the table.

I had told my dad (who is largely funding this vehicle) before we entered the dealership that I was prepared to walk if they want to charge us for anti-theft, but little did I know that it would actually happen. Getting out of the chair and pulling the key that was already in my pocket out to return was painful, but we're a family of businessmen and you gotta know when to walk. Oddly enough, we left a charging cable in the G70 so we had to turn back and go get it. Caught Alex (also a new 3.3t Sport owner) just as he was leaving, got the cable and a remark saying "you gotta pay if you want luxury." Pissed me off a bit, but I remarked that every brand/dealer takes the Lo-Jack charge off.

Went home in a somber mood, but was assured by my dad/brother (who had a similar experience buying a Q50 3.0 Sport a year ago) that they would call me tomorrow and get it sorted out or we'd find another car anyways.

Fast forward to the next day (4/27), the three of us are hard at work and my sales rep (Mike) gives me a call and apologizes for the deal falling through and reiterates their justification for the charge. My dad (who always takes a guns blazing Rambo approach) had done the majority of the negotiation Friday night, so I took a softer approach as I've been in sales before (and based on @Slowerthanslow 's posts). I let him know that I understand that they want to make money, but I also know they're making more than $300 on the car regardless. As my dad never toss an alternative deal, I did. I told him I will give them $500 if they provide Eck Bond and All Weather floor mats (valued around $225). He said he'd talk to the GM (Cyrus, never spoke to him) and get back to me.

Call back #2: Mike says he spoke to Cyrus and the best they could do is $750 for Eck Bond alone, no mats, final offer. I went back to explaining why I didn't feel it was justified, yadda yadda, and my dad asked to take control of the conversation from there. Back to guns blazing and some yelling and the conversation ended with "keep the car then." :suicide: It might be worth noting that he asked to speak to the GM and was told that Cyrus doesn't speak to customers over the phone, but he would speak to him if my dad came to the dealership.
Again, the hopeful young man thought his dad's hardline approach might have put off the dealer and shot us in the foot.

Call back #3: Mike again saying we'll take your deal. Eckbond and floor mats for $500. When can you come in? f$%k YEAAAH!

So went in and it was a quick process from there. No extra sales or anything, just signing papers and handing over some sheckles for our down payment. Went over the car before signing and found a small scratch inside the rear passenger side door handle. NBD, it's not too bad. Drove home with my brother, grinning from ear to ear until we parked for lunch. He noticed a rather large patch of scratches on the rear passenger side door. Got home and noticed some on the tail gate as well. Haven't gotten to discuss this with the dealer just yet as I've been out of town, but since they're applying Eck Bond paint protection, I'm assuming they'll take care of it.

I'll update with the results and if anyone wants to know more about Eck Bond, I'll start a new thread once it is applied to the car (in a few days).

Reactions to the car:

A friend of mine saw the tail end in the garage before our trip to Santa Barbara (in my old car) and goes "Holy shit! What is that?!"

My dad hadn't driven the car/test driven until last night. I know we're supposed to do the break in miles, but I let him ignore that (he didn't floor it anyways) and the man was grinning from ear to ear. He looked down at the speedometer and goes "woooooooow, that's 100mph already." He completely missed the HUD (idk how) until I pointed it out and my mom was already shouting from the back seat about how "we don't need more fast cars. You better make sure you're not speeding!" as she enjoyed the heated rear seats.

My brother: After daily driving his 2018 Q50 3.0t Sport (not RS) was lecturing me from the minute we sat in the car about how to treat it and going gaga over the features. Claimed it as his summer car so he could air out his butt in the heat. LOL he wishes.

Mine: I went home and 1.5 hours later I went into the garage and just stared at my car for like 5 minutes in disbelief and awe of how fortunate I am. I get a shit-eating grin on my face every time I see the car and just typing about it has me missing it (brought the Corolla to work because it was a bit wet out this morning @5:40am).

PS: Thank you to everyone in this forum that has provided helpful information and interesting conversations around this car! You guys/gals (except Mrs. Grumpy G90 owner) really helped me keep sane waiting for the car and made the decision to buy this over the S4 so much easier!

Congratulations! Great write-up!

Thank you!.

For those wondering about front places: I took that license plate off the front ASAP. The bracket holding the license plate frame is screwed on using 3 screws set into the plastic piece behind the grill, but the actual grill is not cut. I put the screws back into the hole (sans ugly plate holder) and you can't even tell there was something there!

Wow, that's quite a negotiation! You learned a lot about car dealers this go 'round. Congrats and great job! Anybody who has the strength to walk away at some point is the person who is going to get a decent price.

Since you mentioned the Lojack thing (it seems to be a virus spreading among Orange County car dealers...) I'll mention something I realized last night... I was going to wait until I gathered more details, but since you mention it, I'm just going to wing it...

As I mentioned in my negotiation story upthread, the Huntington Beach dealer surprised me last Wednesday with a charge -- $795!!! -- for something called "SWAT", which they described as a lojack-style car-locator-in-case-of-theft-thing.

Last night I finally got around to looking at the emails I'd gotten from Genesis after the purchase, giving me the info to sign up for Genesis Connected Services (GCS for short), etc. In the process of setting that up, I noticed exactly what Soma says above -- that there's ALREADY a car locator as part of GCS.

[In fact here's a Genesis G90 video on YT that explains how to use it]

Well, I felt stupid, and that made me suspicious... I did a little Googling and here's what I think is happening...

"SWAT" (the name -- borrowed from the cops, of course, and from a famously cheesy 70s TV show -- already should make you suspicious it's a scam) appears to be a system sold to dealers to help them keep track of cars on their lot. (Makes perfect sense to have that kind of system for really big dealers.) If you google up the SWAT website it sure looks to me like a business-oriented service and NOT something for consumers. My guess is that dealers put these things in their cars to keep track of them on the lot, but then also get a bonus for themselves by telling buyers that the system is "already on the car" and is a glorious extra they should pay for.

As I thought about it last night, I realized how dumb I was when that came up. Point 1) The car has navigation, thus it has some sort of GPS device in it. I'm not an expert on GPS tech, but OF COURSE it's very simple if the car is already reading GPS signals that the car itself can also be located. Point 2) We're well into the glory days of GPS based apps, fitness trackers etc. This stuff has become really cheap. A "Tile" device you can attach to anything you own and track it on your phone costs under $50. There are lots of devices/apps for tracking your pet for $100 or less.

This is why the dealers isolate you and weaken you psychologically! So you're stressed out and thinking about your lost time and your next appointment rather than the OBVIOUS rejoinders to their gimmicks.

Well, I am dumb so that... you don't have to be.🤓

Bring up these points -- "This stuff is really cheap these days; you guys should consider getting a cheaper locator so you can compete" -- if your dealer tries to sell you this "SWAT" thing. And mention that it is ALREADY part of GCS, so why are they charging extra? (I feel like sending an email to Genesis corporate on this point...)

At least I talked it down from $795 to $150. Call it the "I really want this particular car" tax.

Caveat Emptor!

I think the way the vehicle locators work is by cell (satellite in some commercial uses). The coordinates are retrieved from the GPS but the location is sent back by cell.

Looking to update and upgrade your Genesis luxury sport automobile? Look no further than right here in our own forum store - where orders are shipped immediately!
Soma, they told you $1000 for the anti-theft system! Crazy.

With the benefit of hindsight I would have said “How about you keep the device but buy me a $1000 iPhone, put it in the glove compartment, and I’ll use Find My iPhone?”

Thank you! Yeah, it's pretty crazy! I flat out told the finance manager (and later the salesman) "it sounds like you're trying to push the costs of your insurance policy on me." I can definitely understand why a dealer would want to have that kinda system installed, but its complete bogus for the customer to be paying for something like that. They even went as far as telling me that it would get me a discount on my insurance! I didn't care to verify, but I suspect it doesn't.

So now that I'm at work (where I do nothing all day) I can update you all on the purchase!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'll bet right now that Eck Bond is just a sealant they apply via a set of wet wipes a technician uses to wipe down a car by hand. Both Genesis dealers here have their own variant of it. Sure a sealant is a sealant with its benefits, but you can get a better quality one and a more thorough application for cheaper by doing it on your own. Problem is that you have to do it though lol.

Congratulations, Soma! Glad it came together in the end.

You should take your car to a detail shop to have the scratches corrected. I don’t think the dealer would spend the time to correct it before applying the EckBond (never heard of it before, but if it’s a ceramic coating, you will want the finish as perfect as can be before having it applied).

You're probably right about the Eck bond being some wet wipe sealant/coating (definitely not ceramic, I asked), but the main reason I wanted it was for the services attached with it. They'll come to your house to fix door dings, rock chips, wheel scratches, etc. I've heard mixed reviews, but for the price I think it's alright. They said it would take 4-5 hours to apply, so I'm hoping they are going through a proper detailing process in that time. God knows the first wash was absolute shit.

I did speak to the dealer today and they said they would take care of the scratches. They know I'm rather meticulous about the details, so I'll give them the chance to correct it. After this though, ain't nobody washing this car besides me/my brother or a carefully selected professional.

You can find the mudguards online ~$40. They're easy to install, although I had my local oil shop (not Hyundai) do it for free

Looks mean in the dark color scheme. Love it!
