  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Proximity Card Key?

I have one for sale if anyone is interested. Traded my car in but didn't give them the key. $50 + shipping. PM for details and pics.

I had my card programmed by Glassman Genesis of Southfield Michigan. They charged $70.00 for the program and$35.00 to cut the key. I'm going to see if I can have the key cut cheaper. It works like the fob for the auto trunk. While it is a little thicker than I thought, I don't have any money so it's not a bulk problem.. LoL
Hyundaipartsonline show both discontinued.

Bought 2021 G80 discovered on Genesis site I was to receive a card key. Spent months trying to get Genesis support send to me. Email after Email, phone calls for 4mos. "It's in the mail" "I wasn't on a list" etc. Lie, after lie! Never got card. Of course dealerships strategy "once drive off lot we don't care"

dumb dealer.

they don't have the cutter for the key, it is a special template and very expensive (like $4,500) so they likely don't have it nor will ever buy it because it is not a common request, yes it is different than the normal fob key template. all they need to do is order the key precut from Genesis.

I had the dealer try and cut mine, they f**ked it up twice, it would not work in the glovebox or door, only the trunk. finally the parts manager called into Genesis and they told him that they sold them pre-cut, I just had to provide the bill of sale as proof of ownership, the key serial is tied to the VIN. 3 days later I had the proper key, it was $45, but so was the cut and since the dealer messed up the cut twice they "gifted" the pre-cut to me.

make sure they destroy the ones they cut if they don't give them to you, I made sure to watch him break them in half.
Bought 2021 G80. Spent months trying get card I was supposed to get with purchase. For 4mos emails, phone calls. All I got was "its in mail" "your not on a list" lie after lie from Genesis support. Called dealership and as usual strategy "drive off dealership lot we don't care!"

Unfortunately, they have not earned the name "stealerships" for nothing.

So, has anyone been able to get the emergency physical key that's inside the key card cut by the dealer? My local dealer said their key cutting machine couldn't hold the insert, but offered no guidance on where to go to have it cut...

Mine was cut somewhere. It works fine. I have use it to lock and unlock the glove box all the time. I dont remember if the dealer cut it or sent it out to be cut.
mgg

Truth be told, I forgot about the damn thing. I need to reach out to my two dealerships to see if they'll cut it.

There is a regular key with the card key, it's just really really thin, but still works.
My 2022 G80 Prestige came with a key card. It's the same thickness as a credit card. As far as I can tell looking at it, it does not have a physical key. I can't see how it would have one. It is exactly the same size and thickness as my credit cards.

Is the physical key visible / obvious? Or is there some trick to it? Could someone shoot a picture of one?

Here's what mine looks like, and as I said, it's no thicker than my credit cards.

That I exactly what I have.

I think they are talking about the key located inside the key fob.

The original poster said:

"Does anybody use the proximity card key for their G80? The idea of not having to carry a key (rather, just a card in my wallet) certainly seems intriguing - but not sure it is worth $295!"

"Also, the regular key fob includes a backup physical key to unlock the door, in case something goes wrong. I guess if you only carry the card you could get stuck. GarnetTy1473 clarified below that the card key does include a very thin physical key."

"Card Key - Credit card-sized, this proximity key option offers a sleek design and fits easily into a purse or wallet.

That sounds to me like they're talking about a card, not the fob.

I'm still confused, but it wouldn't be the first time. :)

I have an 18 G80.. My "Card Key" is a little thicker than a credit card, but not much. It has a physical key inside of it. An emergency key. Yours may be different. I don't have to take it out of my wallet and touch/place anywhere in the vehicle. Just push button door/start button and go.

Yes as you can see in the picture above there is a key that is thinner than the normal key which fits in the flat key card. There is a tiny switch on the back of the card that has to be moved to the side and the key can pull out. It has to be cut for your car and then it will work on the doors and glove box.

For the new cards.. Will the vehicle start if you don't set the card down? Or do you have to keep physically moving the card in and out of pocket to access and start vehicle?

I tried two Genesis dealers, but neither could cut the key. One dealer had to order it pre-cut directly from Genesis. Press your dealer to order it. I've never had to use the physical key yet, but I tried it in the door, trunk, and glove box and it works in all of them.

The majority of this thread is talking about the proximity key card, which is very different from the card key that the new ones come with. The proximity key card is just like the smart key, but without any buttons. With the proximity card in your pocket, you just walk up to the car and press the button on the door (or the sensor on the handle) and it unlocks. You get in and just press the start key. The card you are talking about does not do any of that.

Yes.. That's what I'm curious about. With the new cards you have to physically take it out of pocket/wallet.. Tap it on the door handle like an NFC credit card.. (it unlocks)..open door.. Get in.. Then place card in tray..let go of card and start car.. arrive at destination...shut off vehicle...pick up card and exit vehicle.. Put card back in wallet/Pocket?

I did not know there was a new card. What you describe makes it sound like a PITA to use. I have the old card key so I never have to take my card out of my wallet unless I want to get into something which is very rare.

I don't believe it will. My card says to physically tap the door handle with the card to unlock, and then set it in the wireless charger to start the car. I consider it to be a failsafe backup, so I haven't really used it. I went out to my car to test that and a few other details, but the dang thing has stopped working. Now I need to call Genesis and see how to get it working again.

Probably needs a new battery. I have the original card and have to replace it every year. Buy them fresh or they wont last that long.

The key card for the 2022's, and presumably the 2021's, apparently is not the same thing as the "proximity card". It's just a credit card. No physical key, no battery. It looks exactly like a credit card. Exactly the same size and thickness as a Visa card, for instance.
