Question Regarding Dealer Installed Wings on 2016 Genesis

I am going to purchase a 2016 3.8 v6 AD ultimate and I'm in the final stages of negotiation and I asked the salesman to "throw in" the wings on the back and I was surprised that he said that dealers are not authorized/supposed to do the installation so he could not "throw them in free" but could check to see if the service department could do it for a fee.

Does this sound true? I've read several posts and many people indicated that they were able to get this done at the dealership for free or small fee. I know others are doing the installation themselves but I'm not interested in doing it myself.

The rear wing is not a Hyundai Motor America part and is not imported by Hyundai for distribution through their USA dealer network.

The rear wing is standard on the Korean version of the Genesis, and enterprising companies have purchased them from a Korean dealer parts department and sold them on eBay, Amazon, or whatever. If USA dealers want the rear wing, they get them from these sources (same as us). What a USA dealer charges for the rear wing and/or installation is up to them.

My 3.8 already had it on there when I took it for the test drive, otherwise I would have made the same request.

When I purchased my car, I told the sales guy that I would only take it if they installed the wings before delivering the car to me. No problem he said, we do that on most the Geneses we sell anyway (the two cars on the showroom both had the wings on the back). Mine came from another dealer and already had the wings put on by that dealer, else my local dealer was going to do that for free. So I have two data points that refute what your salesman claims.

The wings cost next to nothing, and someone with experience can probably change the Hyundai logo for the Genesis wings in less than 15 minutes, so this costs the dealership close to nothing (compared to the margin on a new car).

Also, his argument is pure BS. Either, the dealership is "not authorized/supposed to do the installation" or they are authorized to do this. Paying them a fee does not change the fact that they are "not authorized/supposed to do the installation". I would insist they do this for free just because the salesperson is trying to jerk you around. I hate it when people try to BS me. His "logic" has a hole the size of the moon.

There is some truth that dealers were "asked" by Hyundai Motor America (HMA) to not install the KDM (Korean Domestic Market) wings on a USA Genesis.

Back in 2009, Hyundai Motor America chose to market the Genesis as a Hyundai, even though the word "Hyundai" or the flying "H" did not appear anywhere on the KDM version of the Genesis (sort of like "Ford" does not appear on a Lincoln). The reason they gave was that they needed to improve the Hyundai brand image in the USA, and they would use the Genesis and Equus to do that.

A few years ago HMA issued a demand that dealers not install the KDM wings, but there was not really much HMA could really do to enforce that. Obviously, HMA has given up, and starting this summer the 2017 Genesis will not longer be a Hyundai, but sold under its own brand, so it will have all the same wings as the KDM version.

But bottom line, whatever reason the dealer gives for wanting to charge for purchasing and installing the wings is pretty much irrelevant. We live in a free country, and they can charge whatever they want, especially since it is not a part imported by Hyundai Motor America.

Long before any dealers installed the KDM wings on a USA Genesis, members of this forum were buying them from Korean importers and installing them ourselves. There are hundreds of posts, many with pics and videos, on how to do this.

Out of curiosity, which dealership did you buy from? I got mine at SouthPoint.

I emailed all dealers within about 200 miles of Austin (there are quite a few) with very detailed information, basically enough to provide a lease quote with no additional information needed from me. They beat every dealer that responded by over $150/month (adds up to $5,400 over the life of the lease) and got me the exact car I wanted the next day (I got to the dealership to get the deal in writing Friday evening after flying back into AUS and had the car at 5 pm Saturday) from Houston. They even drove my other car back to North Austin for me the following Monday and dropped it off at work for me.

Great price, great service, and they followed through on everything they promised so far. Unfortunately the dealership is over 50 miles from my home, but there are two closer dealerships I can use for service.

Sorry for hijacking the thread, I hope the OP can get his Wings installed without any hassle.

Do it yourself, it's very easy, it won't take longer than 20min!

My car came with wings installed by dealer. The wings were off center about 8mm to the left and about 1 inch too low, there was a gap at the bottom 2-3mm - what a terrible job they did! So I just asked the manager for new wings and he gave it to me.

Just make sure that tips of the wings needs to be about 3 and 1/2 inch below "upper" edge.

My dealer had no issue throwing them in on my 16 and were supposed to install prior to delivery of the vehicle. When I picked up the car, they said the part hadn't come in yet so I had to wait a week or so for them to come in.

They claimed less than an hour to install wings/splash guards/rubber mats; 4 hours later they were done and they scratched the trunk lid in a few spots and left all the glue from the "H" logo. They couldn't even deny the scratches because the marks were within the H logo which you could clearly see the outline to.

This was in the middle of the winter so the dealer said they'd buff/paint it when the weather got nicer and made notes in the system.

I didn't know that dealers debadge and installed the wings...I bought the wings on Ebay with the prongs shaven down and did the job myself. Ahhh!

its best to do it yourself. When i bought my wifes Genesis, the car had the badge but it was the same one that goes in the hood and they did such a bad job that you could see the paint warped around the badge.

Just had the dealer install them on my car. 99.00 + 25 for labor. Seems silly to charge, but of course I paid.

Got mine for $20 on Fleabay. They're half that now. Dealer installed as a courtesy. Not sure they completely removed the prongs, as there's a 1-2 mm gap along the top. The worst part of driving the Genny service loaner for 3 weeks was the big ole H logo on the trunk and garish Hyundai dealer license plate placard.

Not sure if you are aware, but there are two wings, one for the front hood and one for the rear trunk. The one for the front hood is slightly curved to fit the contour of the hood, and if installed on the trunk, it might explain the gap you mentioned.

Or it might be the correct wing, but just not installed very well.

Yep, it's the rear one, confirmed by part #. D'oh, I should have nipped those prongs off myself before giving it to the dealer to install. Still looks better than the H though!

I bought my 2016 used and it already had the wings on the front and back. They are the grey matte. So....If I want to upgrade to the 2018 more polished looked wings will I have an issue with the notches? Were wings not installed on any of the US 2016 stock? I dont want to have to pull of too find out.....

You can buy the emblems right on this site and help support it. There is a different one for the 2015/16 than the 2018.

The 2916 came from the factory with the "H" but some owners changed them out. You can find instructions if you do a search here too.
