Re: Cold Air Intake Interest??
Ok... My .02. One if the vehicles for my company is a Chrysler Town and Country. Has the powerful 3.8 twin cam. Its CPU does adapt. So does the transmission. Here is how..
For that car only.. With that engine, they use the same filter box as on the 300+hp versions that are in the sedan and pickup. However , to make it "quieter" they use a filter that instead of full filter material, only has a 4" square filter material. The rest of the filter template is rubber like the edge would be. Chokes off the air. I changed it to K&N filter... Amazing difference. The CPU did adjust for the better breathing. Yes, it adds a whooshing sound when accelerating. So what. Picked up real measured 1.5 mpg and the engine and transmission is much smoother accelerating.
Go figure.
I guess I could put in a paper filter that is used in the trucks to get the same thing.
I have had success with the K and N replacement air elements in Crown Vics and many other cars. Did nit work on the Expedition. I never tried a true CAI on the F250-350s diesels. Although people swear by the CAI intakes for them. I never found one that would not suck in hot under good air. I did replace the element on a 6.0 diesel (not the 6.7 one we have), and it lowered EGT, intake temp, turbo spooled up quicker. Improved mileage. Had to clean it about every 5-8k miles. I would not trust it farther than that. Diesels run full air for a given RPM. There is not throttle per say like gas. The power and RPM is controlled by fuel. So, massive amounts of air flow at idle and all ranges. No way the filter can run 50k miles like claimed before cleaning.
