  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Is 15 Genesis backup camera just low quality?

I have two other 2014 cars from other manufacturers and their backup camera is pretty decent even at night. Genesis's quality is like PS2 video resolution VS PS3 resolution. I couldn't believe how bad it was and looked for any plastic cover that may be covering the lense from the factory but there was none. Have you guys noticed it?

I noticed the same. I had a 2013 Charger SRT8 and the camera was HiDef compared to this. My wife's 2010 POS backup camera I installed myself is better quality.

Same here. 2009 and 2012 backup cams were much better than the 2015. Doesnt make much sense to have a hidef screen if the cam is not hidef.

So nothing is wrong with my genesis then, it is genesis in general that is wrong.

I wonder if one can buy a high def version of camera and swap it. Camera should be just camera I would think? Guildance lines etc are controlled by head unit, so swapping out to a camera that not embarrasing might work?

How do they put high definition 720p 9.2 inch screen and put a rear view camera that is so low quality.

yep ... the image quality sucks. I've had a Sonata and an Azera and now a 2015 Genesis ... all three have been equally bad. My neighbor has a new Honda Civic and the image quality on his back up camera is great.

Must be using a different system on Canadian models (unlikely) as my 2015 back-up camera is very clear and crisp. Definitely an improvement on the one fitted to my 2012 - my wife even commented on the fact. Nightime vision isn't great but no worse than any others I have experienced.

The camera on my 2010 Genesis is far from ideal. The camera on my wife's Santa Fe has much better resolution. I inquired with the dealer about swapping out and was given the "thumbs down"

Although the image is acceptable it is far from the high def our screens can easily handle. I wonder how long it will be before someone comes out with a camera high def camera swap. ;)

I think you Canadians got the better deal in North America. We got ripped off with less selections. Congrats to you. Still love the car :).

I would be shocked if there is a different camera for Canadian versions of the car. AWD and suede headliner is one thing, but putting a different camera would make no sense. May just be perception - I have relatives who cannot tell an HD TV picture from SD

I was hoping someone would come out and say "I've done the swap and it was painless!". :(

A few nights ago, a bit of rain, we were tring to reverse park Genesis, and wife mentioned how we couldn't see anything on rear view camera. 14 Lexus GS has better quality, no problem at night even during rain. Same with 14 MB GLK. Night and rain makes Genesis backup camera pretty useless.

Is this issue only prevalent during the night?
i.e. is the picture clear / HD when backing up during day light?

This is not rocket science, they put in a low definition camera as opposed to a few dollars more for something with better resolution. Fail on Hyundai's behalf. No the Canadian model is no better as mine is about on par with the Gen 1 which is by no means HD. The night vision is almost useless if only the cars backup lights are available.

I must be less critical, but I am satisfied with the backup camera image.

I took a couple of pics of the backup cams below:

Back up cameras are a nice little bit of simple and inexpensive tech (there is legislation pending that will make them mandatory on all future vehicles as punishment for all those SUVs we bought ). Keep in mind that back up cameras were never intended to film PBS wild life documentaries. They are intended to be an affordable parking assist - if you actually use them.
It used to be that knowing how to back up [using ones mirrors and knowing where the back of you vehicle is] was enough to avoid crashing into things or hitting unattended children .
The camera that Hyundai chose to put in our cars is a low resolution instrument that likes lots of light to work well. Our less than spectacular back up light intensity makes that little bit of camera thrift obvious. I think Hyundai correctly put that couple of dollars saved into things more important in these wonderful cars ;).
Anyone know a bright plug and play back up LED or incandescent lamp that won't melt the housings or trigger a fault?

Thanks for rubbing in the lack of surround camera views on the US market :(

For $40.00 for the two lamps it's worth a try. I'm sure forum members would like to hear how much these lamps improved your backup cameras performance.
Thanks for the link.
