Ruissimo's Ownership "Blog" - The 5.0 R Spec

Re: 400 Miles In – My Initial Review of the 5.0 R Spec

Well... just noticed my first big scratch today - actually, it is a GASH. It is easily 5 inches long, on the driver's side lower front bumper, right near the wheel well (an inch or so from the bottom of the bumber).

I am so bummed :(

v3gjkh.jpg

I have no idea how it happened. I'm super-careful where I park, and I haven't hit any curbs or anything...

So... what is the best way to go about fixing it without having it professionally done?

Re: 400 Miles In – My Initial Review of the 5.0 R Spec

Very well written. Conveys my feelings exactly. I now have 5K miles on my R Spec and love it more each time I get to drive it.

The Wife has put about half of the miles on the car while I have been away for work. Funny how she never drove my other cars yet i can't get her out from behind the wheel of this one except when we go out together in the car. She's been ignoring her custom truck I built for her since we got the Genney.

I do everything I can to keep my wife away from my car.....

Any recommendations?

Thinking of picking this up ANYWAY for bumper chips and what not... though I think it might be asking too much of this particular issue...

Russimo, I'm sorry to see that. My exprience is that I put a number of little scrapes in a new car during the first 1500 miles as I get used to its dimensions. I got touch up from Hyundai. Matched perfectly and easy to apply. I bought one of those kits from Auto Zone but it was pretty useless to me so I never used it.

Oh my, you mean you actually run into stuff a number of times because you are not used to the car?

After two months and 2,000 miles, I thought it appropriate to post an update.

The Ride

The roads of New England are atrocious -- especially considering we barely even HAD a snowy winter! Having said that, the Genesis continues to gobble up the potholes like Pac-Man. I haven't felt any changes in the way the car handles; the sporty ride transmits all the imperfections to the steering wheel. I don't mind it, but others might. If you live in a city, or in the north... you might want to test-drive the car over the worst roads you can think of before you buy it. This car is no Town Car or Avalon when it comes to cloud-like rides. Thankfully. ;)

The Engine

With the V8 "broken in", I have no reluctance to unleash it when opportunity presents itself -- that doesn't mean I act like Ayrton Senna out there. But every once in a while, I try to push the acceleration to its limits. The shifting "lag" hasn't become annoying yet, but it is noticeable, and I wish it could be tweaked with an ECU update... hopefully that is coming, and if not, it isn't that disagreeable to me, to be honest.

I've had the occasional doughhead try to pass me on the right on the highway -- you know the type; they cut over, pass you and then cut you off when they get near a tractor trailer. That's when the ponies really shine, though! And on a couple of those occasions, not only do I not allow this to happen, but I also push her a little past the speed limit (30, 40 mph, nothing crazy), while leaving said doughhead in the dust. PLEASURABLE, I MUST SAY.

The Electronics

No issues so far. At first, I thought there was a problem with the radio - the couple of times it happened, I was listening to XM. Then I realized that satellite radio needs a direct "view" of satellites in order to work - going under a bridge, or through a tunnel, blocks the view, and static ensues. Again, not a real "problem". I will not be renewing XM when the trial is over. Those people were calling my wife DAILY while I was at work... and when they finally caught me at home, I told them to stop bothering my wife. Calls ended. XD

Loving the smart cruise control, though I wish that the LCD display wouldn't "default" to the distance view every time a car gets in front of me. I wonder if the nav LCD display will come back on if I have smart cruise and a turn comes up... I'll have to test it out, I guess.

The Interior

Again, no real issues to report - I took the car in for service today (more on that below) and asked them to lubricate the door panels for the occasional squeak. Done, free of charge, and no need for me to mess with the doors. :)

I used Meguiar's Back to Black on the inside of the car - though it has kept everything spic-and-span so far, I don't believe it was meant for interior use, and it does collect a bit of dust. Nothing my dash California Duster can't handle every other week though. The seats are performing nicely, though I notice a gluteus maximus "imprint" in my seat now. I suppose when the leather is this soft, it is to be expected. I'll just call it my Hyundai Memory Foam Seat ®!

Exterior

It was bound to happen. My first scratch. In a moment of weakness, I decided to go to a local touchless carwash (just water) about a month ago. BIG MISTAKE... since this happened:

fvus6w.png

Lesson learned, plus in the long run, my paint will appreciate all the personal attention. I covered the scratch with a paint pen, and followed it with a clearcoat pen. Unnoticeable to anyone but me, really. These pens are not easy to use, and require a LOT of patience. If you get a scratch in a more exposed location, I suggest you take care of it professionally.

Other Things of Note

The horn in this car is pathetic... I need to seriously consider upgrading it. Wonder how this would sound in my car?

The headlights appear much "yellower" than the LCD strips, and I am probably going to change them to 5k or 6k bulbs soon. I know I'll lose a bit of visibility, but it will be an improvement aesthetically.

Still thinking of replacing the current airbag unit (with wing sticker) with a proper KDM unit... wonder if the prices will come down eventually... how does that work? I'm not sure.

The Service Experience

Took the car in for service today for the first time at Danbury Hyundai. There was a funky smell in the car, and I thought it was coming from the air vents. Turns out I got some of that Back to Black in the vents, and that's what was causing the odor. I also asked them to lubricate the door panels, as mentioned above.

I have to admit -- I was VERY skeptical of the Hyundai service experience, especially after reading some reports on here. I understand I didn't have any major issues to address, but based on today's visit, I am VERY satisfied with Danbury Hyundai! Pulled right into their service area, which is modern and clean, and a guy came out and took my mileage. I handed him my keys and I walked through some glass doors to the service rep, who was super-friendly and helpful. She asked me if I needed anything else done, and I asked if they washed the car for free. She said yes, and I asked her not to. She asked if I had transportation or if I was waiting. I told her I had a ride, but on my way out, I walked through the service waiting area. Again, clean, modern, free coffee and beverages, and a nice LCD-screen tv! Not only that, but they were playing the Real Madrid vs. Bayern Munich Champions League match when I went to pick up the car. GREAT TASTE IN TELEVISION PROGRAMMING!!!

Back on topic... they followed my instructions to the "T". I was pretty adamant about duplicating the smell in the car, so they looked at it again. Then the service guy who worked on the car came out to greet me when I picked it up and walked me through EVERYTHING he did to check the engine bay for leaks, issues, or abnormalities. Very thorough.

I was happily surprised to see they did NOT wash my car, just as I had requested. These guys are 3 miles from my house, and less than a mile from my office. I am STOKED that they are providing better service than VW ever provided me in 10+ years of ownership (again, I qualify this statement since I am under warranty and haven't had major issues, not that I anticipate any!).

All in all... just as happy (if not more so) with the purchase after two months as the day I bought it!

Re: 400 Miles In – My Initial Review of the 5.0 R Spec

My pleasure! FYI... I'm not sure if I've said this yet, but MAN is that front bumper LOW!

Be very VERY careful pulling up to curbs and what not... the parking sensors help 99% of the time when pulling up to high curbs... but when they don't, SCRAAAAAAPE!

Luckily, no damage the only time I've done so. You have been warned... ;)

Thanks for the heads up--definitely a terrible feeling when you hear that scrape before it's too late and then have to scrape again to back off of it. :(

Personally, I'm used to a low front end and just not even coming within a foot of curbs when pulling up to them (or I just park way out in the parking lot). Coilovers and a 'somewhat slammed' ride will adjust one's parking habits in a hurry :)

I love how much you really love this car. I nominate you to lead the R Spec PR campaign!

Re: 400 Miles In – My Initial Review of the 5.0 R Spec

To understand why I love this car so much... one must understand how much I hated my previous one. But that's a different story altogether...

Had an 8-year old gearhead ask to see the car today after my soccer game. He wanted to sit in it and see the engine - his father was on the opposite team.

"Wow, a V8?", he said when I popped the hood.

That's one proud parent right there, I'm jealous. The only things my son likes on my car, in order of coolest to lamest are: 1 - the LED headlight strips, 2 - Kids Place on XM and 3 - the "map".

He's only 5 though. ;)

Oh, I just remembered! The two of them followed me onto the highway access (which is 4 lanes wide and about a mile and a half long before merging onto i84).

I kept it around 30mph, turned off the ESC, and UNLEASHED. Took her up to about 95mph and then eased off with them WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY in the background. I hope he was paying attention - will have to check next Saturday :)

PS - there was NO ONE ELSE around. Safety first.

Re: 400 Miles In – My Initial Review of the 5.0 R Spec

Five months have gone by. Time for a quick update on the R Spec.

A Bump in the Road

I took my car in for an oil change at 3,750 miles. I'm sticking to my original plan of doing the regular maintenance every 7,500 miles, and changing the oil at the 3,750 interval.

While there, I asked the dealer to take a look at my steering, as I did not feel confident it was acting properly. I won't bore you with the details again - the full story can be found HERE. Regardless, the issue eventually turned out to be a defective EHPS steering valve / motor pump, and after being told initially that it would take nearly two weeks to get my car back as the part was on back-order, the dealership and HMA went out of their way to locate the part (and the fluid, which turned out to be more difficult to locate than the part itself).

Speaking of...

The Dealership Experience - Redux

I went without the car for a week, though I was given a Sonata loaner. And I developed a very deep appreciation for my Genesis in that time. I was also impressed with HMA and my dealership, and with the way they handled a rare situation with a brand new vehicle. Kudos! Brenda, the service advisor, was really nice and went out of her way to call and locate the part as well as to keep me informed of their progress. The HMA contact was also great, and promised to call me within 24 hours to keep me appraised of the situation. Promise kept, and issue resolved shortly thereafter.

Got my car earlier than expected, and not a minute too soon!

The Ride

Believe it or not... the steering actually feels better now than it did when I originally bought the car. I'll chalk that up to the part being defective from the start... who knows? Anyways, it is definitely "sportier", heavier (not TOO heavy), and doesn't pass every single imperfection through to the steering wheel, which I really appreciate in my town's horrendously unkept roads.

Everything else in the car is tip-top; I have grown very fond of the smart cruise control, and use it every single time I am on the highway. I use the Lexicon every single time I am in the vehicle, and even the crappiest bands sound amazing in 5.1! :D

I "discovered" the brake assist (or "Auto Hold") by accident the other day. I noticed the dealer turned off my parking assist when the car was in the shop, so as I reached to turn it back on, I noticed the thing next to the electronic parking brake was an actual button. So... I pressed it! Great feature for when you're in traffic and need to stretch your legs (or crack your knee and ankle joints, if you're old like me).

Summary

After not having my car for a week, I cannot express how much I missed it. The Sonata loaner (base model), was just not even half the car the Genesis is. I'm sorry, but that's my personal opinion.

On Sunday, I took my father and my son to the bakery, and as we got out of the car in the parking lot, a guy came over to us:

"Wow... that's an amazing car! Tell me, who makes it?"
"Hyundai."
"Really? Listen... do you mind if I look in the trunk real quick?"
(pause)
"Sure."
(I open the trunk)
"That's bigger than my Camry's... and my Camry doesn't look half as nice as this. What's this thing cost, anyway?"
"Depends. If you get a V6, lower 30's. This is a five liter V8."
"WHAT!??!! That's crazy!"

So is the attention I get with this car sometimes.

Should You Get One?

Yes.

Nice reviews; even though I am on my second Genesis I still found them entertaining!
