Some Comments on new Genesis G90

It will be fully revealed at the Detroit (N.American) Auto Show this week.
It is a bigger car than the Equus. I calculate about 1.8" longer.
Genesis now will be marketed as a separate sub-brand or brand.
Web photo of V8 chassis shows conventional coil spring suspension (what happened to air ride?); and a little different exhaust configuration (X pipe and two separate resonators vs. a single resonator containing H connection)
Three motor options - don't you just know the V8 will only be on the most expensive version.
Better leather and more wood trim in interior.

My sense is the present Equus will go the way of the VW Phaeton. I saw somewhere that but 200 or so Equus sold in November. I expect to see existing Equus inventory to continue to be deeply discounted, which is good for us on purchase and not so good for eventual trade-in.

You were probably looking at the Korean version. The US version may not have 3 engine options, and upgraded suspension may be an option or standard.

Should I trash my 2015 V8 Genny and get this new G90 thing with a V8? My Genny does the "as reviewed" 0-60 in 5 secs., so that's ok.

What differences would I see? I'm talking about substantive differences, not gadgets.

Kn5owa,
The biggest difference between the Equus/G90 and Genesis is size and weight. Go to Emunds.com and compare the Genesis and Equus. The G90 is a bit longer than the Equus and probably weighs more. Performance wise, your Genesis is quicker, simply because it weighs less. I have had four Genesis and now an Equus. The Equus is built at a higher level than the Genesis. The differences are somewhat subtle. For instance, front seating is almost identical, but the Equus has nicer wood trim.

I think Hyundai needs to look into high strength aluminum to cut down on the weight

I get that will be more expensive...but still

Also..I am not sure its make sense to market a V6 with a car that weighs 4500 plus lbs
In fact...I bet with a V8 and AWD the new car will approach the 5000lb mark

By content..I mean cheapening/thinning things out on the car to make them lighter

Would not be surprised if the G90 has some aluminum components - as Hyundai's new hybrid-PHEV-EV, the Ioniq, has an aluminum hood and liftgate, as well as at certain other areas.

If not, the next gen G80 and G90 will likely have them, if not also a new, lighter platform.

Guess ultra-high tensile steel hasn't advanced enough to cut weight as much as aluminum, and if cost isn't a big enough deterrent for the Ioniq (granted, commodity prices have fallen quite a bit), shouldn't be for the Genesis models.

The Genesis has had an aluminum hood since its inception in 2009 MY (2008 for KDM).

I forgot that someone pointed out that the G2 does not have aluminum. I guess it is a crash protection issue.

LOL....you seem to " misremember" frequently..

Actually aluminum is stronger than steel( lb for lb)... and is considerably lighter and more expensive, than steel, to obtain the same level of strength

My understating is that its also more of a challenge for auto body shops to work with as well in the case of repairs

The Audi A8 is good example of what can be done with aluminum

and frankly it looks like Hyundai took some of the A8's styling cues for the G90

I don't remember what I had for lunch yesterday, much less a post in 2014.

I think they did use aluminum on the hood of the 2009-2014 Genesis to reduce front end weight.

extensive aluminum is really the only way to get the weight down on a full size car...unless you want to cheapen/thin the parts down
As you noted it also drives the price up and crushes some of Hyundai's value proposition

FYI - Hyundai is using Atlanta-based Novelis to supply the aluminum hood/liftgate, so might use them as a supplier for the Genesis models as well.
