  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

SPYSHOTS: The next generation of the Genesis G80 is here

Hopefully they lighten it up a few hundred pounds and put the LSD on the sport model. The problem with shedding weight is that it generally comes down to expense by using more aluminum.
The problem with aluminium is it’s the weakest. It has to go through a complex process to get close to the strength of steels. That’s irrelevant now as the strongest steels are some of the lightest. Boron steel—hot formed—is one of the lightest but it is the strongest steel in the industry.

If you want the best crash protection, hot stamping and the highest grades of steel is the answer. Jaguar Land Rover was going to make a new all-aluminium platform and they cancelled and switched to majority steel. The new Evoque now has similar high-strength steels to Volvo with barely any aluminium.

As stated the new Sonata using hot-stamped steel (boron) in more places than ever and super high-strength steel is incredible; it should be placed in the highest performers for safety when tested. I imagine the G80 will have even more hot-stamped elements and higher-strength steels.

To be honest, I prefer the vehicle not to lose weight. Weight is one of the advantages in a crash, similar to size. I want my sedan to be heavy because SUV’s are heavy, we need a counter. Many of the best performing vehicles are heavy, it’s achievable to have both.

^ There have also been rumblings of Audi moving away from aluminum (and possibly also going to a RWD platform).

Another issue w/ an aluminum chassis is that it requires more sound deadening material; which is why Cadillac went thru the trouble of developing a composite platform w/ the Omega.

The new N3 platform underpinning the latest Sonata drops a good amount of weight using the latest ultra-tensile steel, and Genesis can drop weight further by going w/ an aluminum hood and trunk (or maybe the latest steel can do the job), but let's remember that the added opulence to the interior and all the latest tech gadgets adds weight back.

To add, the N3 platform underpinning the Sonata drops 55 kgs or around 121 lbs from the previous platform.

Nonetheless, while maybe not approaching G70 levels, expect the next gen G80 to be a more dynamic handler than the current model.

The AC controls in the GV80 video remind me of the glide touch controls that Alpine audio had on their radios for a while. It was a cool feature, but after prolonged use turned out not to be as good as the dial, which is why they no longer sell their radios with glide touch.

Anyone else notice in those recent spy shots, the car is fitted with Pirelli P Zero tires? Hopefully they learned from the current generation and got rid of the Continentals, or at least have a better set with improved weight margins.

Also I am disliking the change from there physical buttons to more touch based interactions in that GV80 concept video. It's one thing to give us the option to choose how we want to interact, but never touch the only method. My dad has touch/slider buttons on his Lincoln for fan and sound volume controls, and they are just horrible! I am also very worried about the new gear selector on this new upcoming generation.

Update: Checking out the video, the car is fitted with 275/35R20.

Also on that site I found someone created 3D model renders of the G80 based on the spy shots alone (thanks google translate!). I think these give a good impression of what the car can look like in the front, but the rear quarter panel looks off on how it slops outward near the rear and fuel door. I can't see this curvature in the spy shots.

19852

He also did one on a G70 Coupe.

I hope the new G80 will have sequential/progressive turn signals/indicators like the K900. The clips posted in the two links by Glaz shows the front signals as not, but I hope a version might. It's a unique feature still only on a few vehicles, but if the K900 has it I hope a version of the G80 will. The vehicle in the clips may still be prototype, a region specific or lower trim.

I don’t think they will have the sequential turning signals on the G80. The G90 refresh I believe do not have them either so it kind of leads me to think the G80 won’t either. Also I’m not a huge fan of those renders. You can see the sharp edges in the renderings.

The G90 didn’t have them because I think they wanted to have the effect of the side fender signal and the front as one. They might do that with the G80 too... but the rear could be sequential? We’ll have to wait and see.

True it could have it at the rear but we won’t know until like September or so.

I read someone said in a post about the 2019 G80 that it got sequential signals. The Toyota C-HR has them at the front. Audi has them too, it’s seen as a new technology. Either way I’m sure it will look good.

Well, maybe (even if Korea and China, the 2 main Asian markets for Genesis, like their large sedans), but I'd say just as much (if not more so for Europe).

Even here, in urban centers like NYC, think there would be a market for a premium small BEV (easy to park in small spaces, don't have to visit a gas station - which are getting more difficult to find in the city, etc.).

Don't think could ever get past that chrome nib and the black plastic.

The facelifted CT6 looks better, even tho it still has the traditional/somewhat bland greenhouse/C-pillar.

Kinda funny how the basis for the new Cadillac design language, the Escala, has a greater similarity to the G80 (granted, only so much can do w/ that shape).

this looks like the Genesis concept

Sequential Turn Signals are mention in the Owner's Manual but they don't show up in the Settings menu like the manual states.

On the U.S Genesis site it says the G80 Sport gets sequential signals. I’d be shocked if the new generation doesn’t have them on one of the trims or at the rear.

The videos don't work for me for some reason :(. I get Korean text. Anyone else fix this issue?

And for the newest spyshots, we get closer to the true production model. The lights and grill material seem to be accurate of the final product. The taillight bar seems much cleaner than the new G90's, as the G90 had a weird crystal pattern on the light to be fancy. The grill seems like a simple mesh closer to the G90 rather than the rhombuses with depth like the G70 and G80 Sport. But it differs from the G90 in that it doesn't have the cross patterns engraved in the mesh.

I noticed that the wheels are an interesting color, almost like a bronze rather than the dark chrome Genesis has been using a lot. Maybe Genesis is finally committing to using bronze more often like the G80 Sport and Essentia concept had. I'd be fully onboard with that as I think it looks unique and classy.

Damn I wish these guys would just debut the car.

The wheels do have a hue to them but can’t make out if it’s just gunmetal gray or like a light color bronze. I like the design of the wheels very much.

Is there any news on the augmented reality HUD?
