  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Subwoofer under front seats?

No dumb questions. My 25yr old son comes up from San Antonio and will be over tomorrow or the day after and he probably knows how to help? Have no idea how to upload to you tube, but that is a good idea and I can just post a link. Give me a day or two and I’ll report back to the group.

Looking to update and upgrade your Genesis luxury sport automobile? Look no further than right here in our own forum store - where orders are shipped immediately!

Hopefully this link works? Had to get my kid to help me who already has you tube stuff. Video is backside of our sub woofer. More air and sounds seems to come out the back than the front of the sub.

Looks great! Thanks for taking the time to dig into this. I'm glad to know that the sub is working as intended, just not very powerful.

I wonder if an amp upgrade would make a significant difference? I know very little about car audio.

Not sure if an amp change will help a factory system all that much or not? If I was going to tackle just adding more bass, I would add a 12 inch woofer enclosed in a ported speaker box that fit right behind the rear seats. 3/4 inch particle board glued and screwed, covered in matching carpet is an easy build. I had a Probe GT years ago that I changed the entire sound system out in. My sub box cost me about 10 inches in trunk depth and the width of the rear seat back. It moved enough air out of the port to easily blow out a candle. It could make the hairs on your arm stand up depending what was playing? If we could somehow remove existing subs and install 8 or 10 inch subs in their place and then do an amp change, our cars would thump. Anyone with a sunroof rattle still would wake that up.

I wonder if we could implement a line output converter to splice into the subwoofer output from the amp? I'm thinking maybe that could be redirected to a separate amp, but then I imagine you would still be dealing with the stupidly low crossover frequency from the original amp.

Hey thanks Pulsar. Just to be clear, does the speaker cone, that we see pulsing in the video, point towards the floor of the car? That means that the grill that we can see and touch without removing the seat, is at the back of the speaker?

That would certainly explain why we can’t feel anything if we touch the protective grill. It always confused me that I could not feel/see anything but yet I could “hear” a lot of subsonic content so I knew the subs were working. This explains it?

What you see moving points toward the floor. There is a molded plastic receptacle in the floor the sub mounts to that may be somewhat sealed once the sub is installed. Could not tell without removing that receptacle if it had ports or not? I set a post-it note on the upward facing grill/speaker cone and got some movement while playing, but when placed on the speaker back that fires downward, (I had the speaker facing up for this) that same post it note vibrated off the speaker entirely. I’m not a sound engineer, but do know low frequency bass is more or less Omni directional. I think the subs do more than we realize though. My amp is still exposed from my trunk at the moment from another project I’m working. If I get sporty I may see if I can remove the sub wires from the connector temporarily and replay the same song I used to test the subs with and see what my ear tells me? Would make for an interesting test.

I think you just proved that this system is fine. Personally, I find the audio to be quite well rounded, good bass and with great clarity. Compared to other systems I have had including Bose, Harmon Kardon and B&O, it is as good if not better than the B&O. But thinking that the subs were not working made me feel like I was missing out on something. Now we all know better, so thanks.

Useful to note (from cnet): “Adding a sub isn't just about more bass. With a great sub the system's dynamics rock harder, and soundstage depth and spaciousness improve. A well-matched sub will dramatically enhance the overall sound of your system, and adding the right sub will make a bigger difference than upgrading electronics.”

and

“Subs are at their best when they're not calling attention to themselves. That is, you shouldn't be aware of any bass coming from the subwoofer, all of the bass should seem to come from the speakers. Ah, but when you turn off the sub you'll be amazed by what the sub was contributing, even with recordings that didn't have a lot of bass!”

Was it easy to remove the speaker? Did you have to remove the seat?

did you have to remove the seat to access the speaker? I need to remove it because I think water got inside it.
Yes you need to remove the seat. Someone has done it, might be in this thread if you go through every page or it was another thread on this forum.

Anyone have any friends with a stinger who is willing to test this?
I know this is old and this response may be completely unnecessary, However I just came from an 18 Stinger GT2 (top trim) to a 22 Launch edition G70, and to my disappointment, The System in my (5 year old) Stinger hits noticeably harder and more clear than in my G70. In my stinger I was very happy with the sound system, every frequency was clear enough and the bass was punchy enough for me to not feel like I needed to install an external subwoofer. The G70 however feels the same in the Highs and Mids, but the lows feel like they don't exist at all. It feels like all the bass is coming from the front under dash speakers. Now, I know the 22 Stingers had an issue early in production that caused a similar experience, so I'm hoping that may be the case, however if the G70's actually have weaker subs than the stinger, I will be very disappointed.

You can try pressing the reset pinhole in the dash; many G70 owners have their bass restored by resetting the system.
Others have also noticed that after a reset, if you enable any of the sound stage modes instead of leaving it on the default “reference”, it messes with the bass. I haven’t personally noticed this when testing but I also prefer the sound of reference (natural, no altering the sound).
I also leave the EQ flat. But I love bass and added a 10” 600w shallow sub in the trunk which is perfect imo.

can you show me a picture of where the reset hole is in the system? Ive only had the car for about a week and havent noticed anything that looks like a pin hole anywhere. Also, Personally I prefer the On stage setting as thats what sounded the most concert hall like to me in my stinger, and it kinda sorta does the same thing in the G70 but its not as noticeable.

Look at the main volume knob; there should be a small dot/hole beside it within less than half an inch away. Depress that hole with a pin or toothpick or something that will fit.

As I mentioned, using Sound Stage modes other than Reference can cause the bass to perform poorly. Up to you.

I tried it and it seems to have brought them back to life, based on some short testing anyway. I also tried the same song on all 3 modes and "on stage" still sounds the best to me, but I like to feel like I am in the middle of the music and have the sound coming at me from 360 Degrees. Doing On stage and having the sound set to -2 towards the rear achieves that effect, which I had to do in my stinger as well.

That's for the update. I have been through 2 G70's and miss them everyday. On a G80 Sport now and its nice, but not fun.

I was experiencing this same issue in my GV70 when streaming from Spotify on my phone. The bass was good when listening to FM radio. So, I was stumped that it wasn't when streaming. I figured out what the issue was for me. I'm using Dolby Atmos and the equalizer was set to normal in my phone. I switched it to rock and the problem is solved. As far as the subwoofers under the front seats not vibrating, I was told by the audio team at Best Buy that they're downward facing so they shouldn't vibrate on the back (which is what we're looking at under the seats) if they're working and mounted correctly. I'm very happy with my sound now.

At least on the G70 the speaker cone is not actually downward facing, it faces up, but, the backside of the sub is somewhat open and the cavity the sub sits in will reflect the sub output back toward the interior. The sub has a low profile design and not the usual large magnet hanging out the rear. Different than what most of us are used to for the magnet is hidden, or more flush with the voice coil of the speaker.

Bear in mind that while Amazon and Apple both have premium tiers that offer high-bitrate uncompressed HD audio, Spotify has yet to offer even lossless CD-quality streaming. Spotify HiFi: release date news, price prediction, quality, and latest rumours It has been talked about for years, literally, but as of yet... no dice.

My daughter has been pushing me to switch to Spotify family account, but I have so far resisted because of their lack of high-res audio. I have auditioned Spotify and AMU "side-by-side" in both G70's Lexicon and Stinger's HK systems, and the difference is enough for me to shy away from Spotify... at least for now. My son has Apply Music and its highest quality is on par with AMU.
