  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Sunroof Rattle

I've read this thread from page 1, but it seems to me you have omitted the part of your story between second lube application (that made it completely quite) and the moment you've got the noise back. I really hoped that your "throughout lubrication" method would solve the problem, until I saw your messages closer to the end of the thread where you complain about the rattle/squeaks again. Did it return by itself?

.. :(

Sorry about that! :)

It was quiet for quite a while, but started making noise again. I thought enough time had passed that the techs would have found what was causing the problem so I had it worked on. It wasn't fixed, but it wasn't any worse, either, but HMA wanted another tech at another dealer to look at it.

Well, that just made it worse. HMA sent an engineer and a parts manager to look at it, they heard the rattle and then took a drive in the manager's car, which also rattled. This is where it really gets good: Since the other car also rattled, it was determined that the rattle on mine is NORMAL!!!! Probably the stupidest conclusion I've ever seen anyone come to, but HMA backed them up. Now they won't work on it anymore and, between the rattle and persistent vibrations, I have an attorney working on the problem.

PS: My wife just rode in my daughter's Sonata with the roof open and it DIDN'T Rattle. I wonder why they can make a roof for the Sonata that doesn't rattle, but can't do the same for the Genny?

Do you mean with the roof SHADE open? Otherwise it would be pretty noisy to hear anything.

I think it's either new (or lucky) Sonata, or the area of the sunroof is smaller compared to Genny.

My previous ride 2011 BMW 535 GT also had an enormous pano roof, and it also squeaked a little at the end of its 36-months lease on bad roads and in turns, but it was very subtle compared to brand new Genny. And with the closed shade I didn't here anything...

With the roof open on the Sonata. There's no problem hearing the roof rattles in our Genny with the roof open, either a little or open all the way.

I had the 2012 sonata hybrid with pano roof that had the rattle before I purchased it. I made them fix it before and they took care of it like they knew about the issue. I believe the added some padding and tightened bolts and never had the issue again. I had the creak/rattle in the genesis constantly during the winter but it disappeared when the dealer looked at it as the weather had warmed up. I've had it off and on recently and hopefully it will go away completely or be present when I take it for the next service.

Ckon, any update on the lemon case with your Genesis?

At first I thought the rattle was coming from the sunroof system. As the noise became louder and more consistent over a 4 week period, I was able to locate the location of the rattle or vibration. It was coming from the overhead console where the sunglass compartment is located. Tech dropped the module and installed foam/felt. The noise went away.

Just read that another person on the forum stated that the map reading light was the cause for them. That module which includes the map reading light, sunglass holder, switch to open sunroof, etc. was the cause of my squeaking or vibration. As previously stated, tech removed that plastic module and installed foam and this has appeared to work.

Are our cars covered for 12 mos/12k miles for these rattles/squeaks???

I have this rattling sound and I'll have to try this. Can this be done DIY?

I'm currently dealing with Hyundai Motor America over a few tech issues with my car, and I too have run into a similar roadblock. On a few occasions, the techs/HMA reps noted that the issue/flaw is observed but working as designed. So, in other words, Hyundai believes that a failure is by design. Frustrating.

I hope you end up getting your situation worked out. I have little hope that mine will ever be resolved.

I can hear a mild rattle in the sunroof when going over bumps. Going to take it into the dealer. Anyone else notice this? I can only hear it when the head liner is open.

I finally took a stethoscope to my little buzz/rattle ... and its coming from the map light/sunroof control unit and not the sunroof. Yours may indeed be coming from the sunroof. However on mine; the buzz/rattle came from the aforementioned control/light module. I wedged a credit card around the seam of the units fascia plate where it meets the headliner until the buzz/rattle was the least annoying ... and then I wedged in some pieces of thick fabric around the seam. Has helped a great deal. I'd think twice about taking a Korean car back to a an American dealership.

I'm a pretty big Hyundai fan, and I've just got a 2015 Genesis. So far, nothing major as far as issues. I will say this though; If Hyundai is planning to have a successful launch of Genesis as a separate brand, they will need to clean up the issues that are "normal". Luxury buyers will not put up with that.

My initial rattle was coming from the map lights/sunroof control lever area. They installed foam in the module unit to eliminate the constant squeaking. Now, I definitely hear another rattling noise coming from the sunroof area when I go over bumps. Before I purchased this car I thought I heard the same rattle but it was faint and thought it was coming from the electric rear window sunshade. The dealership took a look at the car and the rattle went away until now which has been about three months. I will pin-point the area where the noise is coming from before taking to dealer.

Emailed both Dave Zuchowski/CEO and customer service. Within minutes Mr. Zuchowski and regional office made contact with me. They are sending out engineer on Monday to look into sunroof rattle issue. Wish me luck.

how did it go? My car is very quiet, well put together cabin, with the exception of all the roof noises that i suspect are the sunroof. Someone obviously goofed up on that aspect of the design

Dealer installed new sunroof assembly. Noise went away but unit was perhaps not installed correctly. When closing the sunroof the two glass panels do not line up correctly. When fully closed one glass panel is a lot higher than the other. I had the opportunity to look at the sunroof assembly that was removed. It is quite flimsy. The source of the rattle is inside a hollow crossbeam. We don't know what is going inside the beam. Dealers just replace the entire assembly-no adjustments can be made on the rattle. The two shades(directly above your head, ceiling) that come together do not track properly. The tracks are part of the sunroof assembly. Hyundai has been on top of the situation. The car is back at the dealership to determine if unit can be adjusted, was installed incorrectly, or is defective. Hyundai engineer is once again at dealership. Hyundai regional office has been with me every step of the way. Will keep you updated.

Update, all minor details were resolved and sunroof rattle has completely disappeared. So the replacement of sunroof assembly was the cure. Now I have discovered a slight clicking noise in the steering wheel unit when turning the steering wheel left or right.

I assume the sunroof was covered under warranty? Out of curiosity, do you or anyone else know what the warranty is if the sunroof begins to rattle? 12 months? 5 year/60k miles? I tried a quick search but came up empty.

One service rep told me that Hyundai covers an assortment of rattles for 3 years or 36K miles whichever comes first. Not sure if this is correct info.
