If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Sunroof Rattle

After waiting months for this magical dry lube that would solve all my woes (Only they never got any) I escalated at the dealership and they are looking at it next week with anticipation of replacing the seals (I think that was what he said). The guy mentioned the new Sonatas are dealing with a similar issue, so given the quantity of Sonatas to Genesis I am hoping that actually helps us get through this mess quicker now that there will be a larger light on the issue.

Good luck, they replaced my seals too. Worked for a bit (month or two) but that's it.

What dealership are you going to? I see you're local...shoot me a PM! :D

Really want to step up to the G90 soon, but thinking of throwing Hyundai in the trash where it belongs and moving on.

That's a pretty extreme reaction to what is in reality a minor (albeit annoying) problem that is isolated to one specific model of car on a feature that is not shared at all with the G90.

It's really not. The problem itself is only half the issue, the service (or lack thereof) and ineptitude from dealerships and corporate is also severely lacking...irregardless of how "minor" the issue may be.

Whats more, who's to say these "minor" issues are not indicative of overall QA/QC? If they can't build a sunroof that doesn't rattle after 10,000 miles of driving, how much confidence should we have with their in-house 8spd tranny down the road? However unreasonable, one can't help but start to draw correlations, especially given the brand's age.

At the end of the day, thankfully it's my money. And I'll stop spending it with Hyundai/Genesis if I see fit.

Well one thing I can tell you is that they did not build the roof. That was outsourced to a company who manufactures them, over there in Korea or China. They get a big box full of them and they install them. Between that and the number of high-mileage G2's there are just on this board that do not have any significant problems - combined with their warranty, I do not think that it is at all indicative of a larger problem across the brand or platform & its other components (like engines, transmissions and electronics). I would also challenge you to find pano roofs from other companies that do not develop rattles as tehy age - and yes. I am including Merc, Lincoln and Infiniti in that statement.

It is obvious there is a design issue - and of course Hyundai's CS skills can use some improvement. It's just not worth 25-35% premium on the vehicle price though... and my dealer takes pretty good care of me.

Your profile says you are in the midwest. If you are in Chicagoland - I encourage you to give Rosen Hyundai a whirl. Despite design issues which are not their fault - they have taken good care of me and are quite professional without me expecting them to put talcum powder on my ass. :)

Thanks, if I'm in the neighborhood I will definitely do that. I don't expect powder, or even anything fancy. Just a fair diagnosis of issues, and...imagine this...a fix! A loaner prior to their ordering parts would be nice too (have been told multiple times Hyundai will not authorize a loaner if no parts are on order).

I must've had great luck with pano roofs, absolutely no noise from a
-BMW X5 (80,000 miles before sale) $70k
-BMW X1 (40,000 miles) $39k
-Jeep Grand Cherokees (few in the sample at 30-50,000 miles) $38-52k

If Jeep can do it, so can the Koreans :) it's not rocketsurgery

ETA: And I get that most automakers outsource components to other manufacturers. But when they put said component it in their car, the ownership falls on them (in the consumer's eyes anyway).

My update: seals were replaced several weeks back. The issue came back within a week and I've been living with it. They were out of loaners (G80s) back in late August. Hopefully, I can get a Genesis loaner and simply have the the entire sunroof replaced in the near future.

that's about how long the 'fix' (replacing the seals) lasted for me too..

Hatfield. I will send a PM once I am on a PC, site won't let me from an iPad (or I'm just missing it)

I dropped my 2015 5.0 Ultimate off this morning for the rattle, curious to see what their plan of action is. While they sell a lot of Genesis units at this dealership, (North Richland Hills Hyundai), they didn't seem to be very familiar with the issue, if at all.

They were happy to put me in a loaner, but as the loaner was an Elantra they offered a Enterprise rental instead, which I thought was nice of them.

I'm curious as to if anyone else has noticed that the rattle tends to go away at speeds of 70mph and above, but is very noticeable between 20 and 65?

I also asked them to take care of the mold-mildew smell and they gave me a somewhat BS answer of "we can service that, but Hyundai won't reimburse us for that service of cleaning the mildew off the evap coils". That is a pretty lousy statement, one that I have never come across for an issue on previous BMW, Mercedes, and Lexus vehicles.

I love the vehicle, and it is my 3rd Genesis, but these small details are killing me and perhaps better explain why this vehicle just can't afford to $20-$30k premium of its German and Asian counterparts. I'm quite excited to see how they do with servicing the G90, given its even higher premium pricepoint.

+1
I have been treated well at Rosen. I had a tricky vibration issue that turned out to be 2 sets of bad Michelin Tires (not dissing Michelin, just my experience with the MXM4s)

Rosen was able to take the time to diagnose the issue, and negotiated a replacement set of Conti DWS 06s at no cost to me.

My dealership proactively fixed that thankfully. They said there is a ton of dead space above the dome lights/roof controls/sunglasses holder. They had that removed when they replaced sunroof seals and said they packed insulation in there. Definitely helped.
oTold

Told my dealer (Hyundai Chantilly) about this fix and he implemented it. It has resolved a lot of the higher pitched / frequent creaking! The occasional heavy clunk/creak is still there. Overall considerable improvement! Thanks!!

FYI as I applied light pressure around the map/dome light assy i could duplicate the high pitched creak/squeak.

So I am going to pick my 2015 5.0 Ultimate up this morning after leaving it with the dealer for two days to diagnose and fix the sunroof issue.

The service rep called me last night and said "while we can hear the rattling from time to time, it's not something we can figure out how to fix, so we suggest you just keep the sunshade closed to limit the noise". Several times I mentioned the forum and fixes that others had gone through to hopefully resolve the issue, but they really didn't care to put forth the work to even try and resolve the issue.

This type of reaction/response is going to be what keeps Hyundai/Genesis from succeeding in the luxury segment. A $15k Elantra driver may find this acceptable (no offense to Elantra owners), but on a $50k+ vehicle I just don't find this to be an acceptable service experience, albeit one that I fully expected after having some issues back with my 2012....

Any suggestions on where to start with resolving this issue? I've called numerous dealers here in the Dallas/Fort Worth area and it seems like none of them are familiar with the issue of our rattling sunroofs.

At this point, I'd suggest sending an email to Dave Zuchowski CEO of HMA. Let him know (politely) of your frustration, and that your dealer is suggesting that you live with the problem, and that is not what you expect from Genesis. Other posters have reported that Dave responds, and gets the ball moving. It's worth a shot.

I'm in the exact same boat on my 2015.

First try, had the car two days, was the dry lubricant. Picked up the car and it rattled all the way home. Dropped the car off again last Tuesday and I should get it back next week with new sunroof seals.

We'll see.

In the mean time I'm driving their 2017 G80. Had 27 miles on it when they gave it to me.

Don't like the chrome they added to the hood and trunk emblems. Looks cheesy.

They also eliminated the word Genesis on the mirror puddle lamps. Just a big Genesis wing lights up now.

Life goes on...

Thanks! for the email address - sent my email in.
Can we get proactive on this? How many of us have the roof problem and how many don't? I found this post on a KIA site - has anyone tried it with success?

Exactly. Whenever the car is moving, turning, braking. The noise is behind my head from the stationary glass portion.

Seeing the dealer in the morning about this.

There was a 'fix' over in the Sonata side of the world.

" The sunroof creak is an easy one. I had it for months and it DROVE ME NUTS. My service guy and I worked very hard to figure it out and I think we were among the first to identify the solution. The issue is a cross member between the two glass sections. The dealer needs to remove the headliner, and remove this cross memeber. He has to put some sort of sound dampening material between the mating surfaces, and reinstall, re-torquing the 9 bolts to spec. My service guy used the fuzzy side of a velcro strip between the surfaces. Now it is dead quiet."

With the continuing frustration of this sunroof rattle and a recent failed dealer visit to diagnose, I'm wondering if weather and temperature are a contributing factor to this issue.

When I took my 2015 5.0 Ultimate in a couple weeks ago it was around 65-70 degrees in the morning when I took it in and the roof was rattling like crazy. By the time they looked at it later in the afternoon the sound had apparently faded and was "failed to replicate issue", but the temps had risen to mid 80's and approached 90.

Yesterday it was 80+ degrees here in North Texas and Oklahoma and I drove almost 300 miles for work with little, if any rattle. Today temps have dropped dramatically, and it is 55 degrees right now and the roof is rattling like crazy. I have a another professional traveling with me in the passenger seat and he hears the rattle as well.

Has anyone else noticed sensitivity to rattling with temperature changes? Perhaps it has to do with expansion and contraction of materials with sun and temp changes?

In addition to the sunroof rattle, I'm also getting a flutter noise from under the car between 25-35mph, also noticed by my passenger. I've seen mention of this flutter in another thread.

These couple small issues are annoying the heck out of me, to the point that this car might be on its way out if the issues can't be diagnosed and resolved!

Been over a week now and still no car.

They did repossess my 2017 G80 because they sold it. Gave me a 2017 Santa Fe Sport with 165 miles on it.

Saw the car on Monday. It was in pieces.

I have the rattle as well, and temperature definitely makes a difference. It's also somewhat telling that the G90 does not come with a panoramic sunroof.

...also somewhat telling that the G90 does not come with a panoramic sunroof.

Bingo... If it was an option on the Ultimate package, I would have gotten a car without the sunroof even though I don't have the rattle issue everyone else has. With the Florida heat, I like my AC way to much to open the sunroof. :D
