  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Sunroof Rattle

So has anyone had this issue successfully resolved by their dealer yet? I'm dropping off my car this evening for them to look at it tomorrow, but I'm not overly optimistic. At the same time, this definitely needs to be resolved. Not an acceptable issue for a new car at any price point, but especially at the $52K price point.

Yes. It took a couple tries, but my dealer finally got it. The problem was the rubber fan-fold on each side of the sun-roof glass was coming unattached from the glass panel. That's what was rattling around. Apparently it snaps onto the glass somehow, and it was coming unsnapped. After a couple go-arounds with re-snapping them, they ordered new parts (the rubber fanfolds), and that has so far fixed the problem.

Need to pin this somewhere for future reference....

My dealer finally got the problem resolved. In the center cross bar (above the B-pillars), the plastic trim pieces became unlatched. It would rub against the metal and cause creaks. They were able to snap it back in place and secure it. So far, no noises!

Great to hear! Glad it all worked out painlessly.

That's kind of where the sound in my car comes from. And it makes sense since the noise goes away once I tilt open the sunroof.

I'll be making my 6th visit to the dealership after the local holidays in a couple of weeks.

So my luck, whenever a tech sits with me on a test drive, the sound disappears. In any case, my car is in the service center for the 5th time and they are basically going to take apart the roof to find the problem. I've sent copies of the resolutions of those owners here (thanks for sharing) who had their issues resolved; hoping this would give them an idea of where to look.

Fingers crossed.

Make sure the roof liner is pulled back, exposing just bare glass. In my case, when I closed the roof liner, it pushed against whatever was rattling, and the rattle went away.

If worse comes to worse, PM me! Maybe your dealer could call my dealer and see how they fixed my problem? Couldn't hurt!

Yea, actually I have it rolled open for most of the time. I've had 4 people in my car and the rattle continued. I just have bad luck with the lead tech. Maybe his weight is at a specific threshold that makes the rattle disappear, lol. :D

Got my Genny back after 8 days at the shop. Before I took it home, they said they opened up the roof and found nothing lose of broken. They tightened some nuts and lubricated everything. They tested it and drove it for several KMs and found no noise. I was skeptical and took it back.

Drove to work and on the way, heard the same rattle 3 times :( I think I am just going to have to live with it and learn to ignore it :(

Because if its the knocking noise i think its from the front and rear sway bars i am going to remove mine this weekend to see if it goes away i think the rattle and the knock are two different issues. Mac

Mine is kind of like a loud thump from just over the driver's head area and sometimes from the rear. It's not a "rattle" per se, just a loud thump/ knock when the car starts off from a cold start and goes over a bump, sways from side to side or goes down in a dip in the road. Once the initial thump rears its ugly head, I'll probably hear it once or twice more during a drive (it's not constantly thumping).
They are supposed to remove my entire roof and replace the sunroof seal and check in there to see what's causing it. If doing all that doesn't fix it, I'll just have to live with it for a few more years then trade it in. :(

Well, my fingers are crossed. :) Listening to the rattle from my roof this AM I tilted the roof and the rattle went away; when I closed the roof the rattle would come back. I figured that some rubber lube on the seals of the roof panel itself might help. I lubed the whole area once before but can't remember if I did the roof panel itself. Anyway, after the lube job I drove about 20 miles on one of the local poorly maintained (ahem!) local roadways and (SO FAR!) haven't heard any more noises at all. Time will tell I guess, but even if the noise returns, this is certainly a strong indication of which area needs attention to fix this problem permanently, at least on MY particular car. I'll keep y'all posted. Wish me luck.

I'm having the same issue with the sunroof rattling. And the thump is the rear. First I thought the thump was my snow scrapper bouncing around in the trunk but after reading some the post, I realized I have the same issue. I'm going to make an appointment with the dealer to have them take a look at it. I hate this dealership cause the first thing they will say, its not a problem. Then the dancing begins. Yes/No.... Yes/No. Other than that I love my car. Black/Black 3.8 Ultimate AWD, with tinted windows and rear emblem.

I understand where you guys are coming from with not wanting the techs to be "learning" on your vehicle. I guess I have a couple of reasons why I'm taking mine in to get checked:

1. I want to start officially documenting this with Hyundai. I feel if it's not documented, once you finally report the problem is, to them, when it started.

2. For a while I could open and close the sun roof to make the sound go away for a while. Now that is no longer the case. But then I thought to myself as I was doing that: this is a $52,000 car - this is ridiculous. What would passengers think as I did that while driving them around to make the noise go away?

I agree that the car is so quiet that it probably makes the problem sound even worse, but my rattle is actually getting worse - it's now constant on all but the smoothest pavement and keeps getting louder to where you can hear it over the 17 speaker stereo. I will probably tell them to check it out, but until they have a service bulletin on how to address this problem, they shouldn't be taking apart headliners and such. I'm concerned about what issues that could cause.

I only have 1,600 miles on my 3.8 Ultimate, and I'm already taking it in for an issue, which started at about 500 miles or so.

I hate to disappoint you but, you only have 14 speakers. Only the 5.0l comes with 17 speakers. Sorry

3.8 Ultimates have the 17 speaker system as well - It's the Ultimate package that provides the upgrade from 14 to 17 speakers - at least for USA vehicles!

UPDATE: The roof is still quiet so far. My wife drove the car last evening and I did about another 25 miles with it this morning and everything is still quiet. Fingers still crossed.

Not sure where you're getting this list from but the options are all over the place - these are definitely not all correct for a 3.8 AWD Ultimate. Sorry but you're not correct about the stereo system in the ultimate.
