  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Sunroof Rattle

Thanks for the pointers. Yes I noticed that mesh too.

Sounds like progress! :)

What I was referring to I wouldn't call a "mesh" so not sure we're talking about the same thing.

What I'm calling the "skirts" are simply the right and left edges of the trim that forms and surrounds the edge of the moveable panel itself. The l&r edges of that trim extend downward as guides or seals - not sure what. I think this trim is made of a pliable firm plastic, not rubber or mesh. I'm worried about confusing the issue because I don't know how else to describe this area. I'm not even sure they're important - I just mentioned them because they were an area I didn't address the first (unsuccessful) time I tried to lube the area.

Good luck to you.

Mm, perhaps I didn't quite understand it the first time. I will look again. If it is not too much trouble, would you at some point be able to snap a couple of pictures of your roof and point out what you were referring to? If it isn't obvious the first time, I may have missed it. Thanks a lot :)

What makes me wonder though is; I had read about lubricating the roof as a solution for other cars with panoramic sunroofs with similar knocking noises. I never took them seriously because I thought to myself; the noise doesn't sound like creaking or squeaking, so why would lubricating it make the knocking noise go away? I still can't quite answer that question :) Care to share your point of view?

And once again, thank you so much for the support and vote of confidence :)

Mine has similar squeak sound while driving with the roof shade open. I was thinking it sounded like the rubber gaskets or something making the noise when the roof panels shift slightly while the car is in motion. Pictures with arrows pointing to the spots for lubrication would be good if someone can provide. Thanks for posting all the good information on this thread very helpful!

I'll see what I can do about pics when my wife comes home with the car.

I think when we read about lubricating roofs we think of grease on rails, not rubber lube - I know I do.

My theory is that what we're hearing isn't actually rattles or knocks, it's probably a micro popping sound when these dry materials are being pushed into contact and instead of sliding along each other when there's motion, will release with a "POP" instead. Kinda like a very mini earthquake when the plates finally release under pressure to move. :)

I think you're right - I'll see what I can do about the pics later today.

That might be true for creaks/knocks, but mine has a definite rattle that has to be something loose. I suspect it's related to some extra play in the roller mechanism of the sunshade and not the actual roof itself.

Here's a pic. This is simply to ID what I was calling a skirt. Please note that is actually part of the trim piece that surrounds the moving panel. There's not much point of IDing any other points because you really need to lube everything you can see or reach. Good luck.

Last night i torqued the shit out of the sway bar ends and noise was gone but i didnt drive it for more then a couple of minutes . I WILL NEVER GIVE UP ON IT UNTIL I GET IT RESOLVED ahhhhhhhhhhh. I had just returned from another round of spraying when I saw your skirt photo. I went right back out to make sure I got that covered :) I had taken another test drive prior to spraying the skirt and like yesterday things were quiet. I just hope they remain so by tomorrow morning <fingers crossed>.

Thanks Chuck!

That's exactly the part that gave me fits about a rattle. Those "skirts" are supposed to somehow click in place, otherwise they will rattle with the headliner slid back. My dealer eventually ordered new "skirts". They still rattled at first, then the tech got in and fussed with getting them clipped in properly. Haven't had a problem since. This was on a 2012 3.8.

Can you describe the noise you are hearing thanks so much. Mac

Hmmm. It looks like they are just a part of the trim that surrounds the panel. I haven't looked at them THAT closely, but they don't seem easily replaceable. I couldn't even get mine to wiggle even a little bit. There is a kind of bellows assembly that's just inboard from there that I thought was being referred to when a previous owner (maybe you, now that I think about it) said there was a loose part that needed to be clipped back in.

Since we're getting some, even temporary, results from this lubing it sure seems like we're on the right track. :)

Probably was me. And a bellows assembly is probably a good description of what I was talking about.

Then that isn't what I was calling the skirt, not that it matters much since none of us know what the hell we're doing or talking about! :) :) Oh, well, at least we're having fun. :)

Mine is a definite rattle/ knock as well. I will try some of that lube later.

Just got a call from the dealership. They say they lubed it up good and the noise is now gone. I'll be the judge of that tonight!
