  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Sunroof Rattle

So after having my sunroof replaced, the rattle is gone.

However, now when i am at low speeds/go over bumps, there is a louder creak sound from the roof/b pillar/sunroof area.

My smart key should be in soon and so I am going to have them look at the creak sound when I get that programmed. The creak is even worse than the rattle

I recently had my windows tinted and when I went to drive home the sunroof started to rattle. I took the car back to the shop 5 minutes before they were supposed to close. The owner Aaron Cook stayed after for an hour fixing this sunroof. I told me when he was done that I would likey need new brackets for the mounting of the glass eventually. He said it looks like they've been rubbing whiched caused them not to go back in correctly.

I have a 2016 Genesis 3.8 with sun roof I purchased last Fall. I had the rattle too. I took it to dealer this past Monday and as of today ....absolutely no rattle. What they did I don't know but evidently it can be done.

If there's any consolation to be found here, a precursory search for a similar issue with other premium brands reveals like issues. I would have to believe from an engineering/stability standpoint cutting a massive hole in a structural component of the car to be somewhat of a nightmare. No doubts there's massive amounts of flex for the sunroof to accommodate.

I just purchased a '16 and will wait patiently for Hyundai to 'get off the pot'.

When Hyundai worked on my Sonata pano roof they did the same thing. They ended up having to replace my pillars since they damaged them taking them off and on multiple times. They also damaged most of the clips holding the headliner up which also caused lots of noise. Once all the clips were replaced, new pano roof and new pillars were installed the car was finally quiet. This is why I am dragging my feet taking the Genesis in with all the noise this roof makes. I just know its going to be a multi month and multi trip issue.

Report back in a few months if it holds. It's clear from others the matter has been resolved, but only temporarily.

I almost don't want to post on this thread as it's very long and not 100% related, but..........How noisy is everyone's sunroof when it's raining? Mine gets pretty noisy and sometimes I even hear little metal dings which must be the rain hitting particular spots. Since I bought my car second-hand I will always have a concern that something is amiss rather standard.

Yes, I hear a little shattering kind of sound when a particularly large drop of water hits it good and square. I leased mine because of the roof. I figured that a more ambitious version of something that is problematic to begin with was a bad idea.

I've purposely never used mine - that's the secret. Sun roofs are the biggest scam going - with the possible exception of paying $500 for nitrogen in your tires.

Also, never used the A/V stuff. I hate telephones and as far as maps - I'm macho - I know where I'm going.

So after 2 years +, car is completely trouble free.

Intriguing video documenting the replacement of the pano roof... holy shit, is all I can offer. Terrifies me to think the crack staff at my local dealership would be able to do all this and get it all back together without any collateral damage or subsequent issues with the car.

What's the big deal ....it only took them 3.33 min. to complete the replacement :=)

Zeez, it's time for you to update your user profile and to admit that you own a Genesis.

What a thread; 62 pages and growing! Note that they didn't make the pano roof mistake with the G90. My sunroof is quiet too.

I tried a little while ago. It doesn't seem to update in real time.. we'll see soon!

It looks to me like that car originally didn't have a sunroof and they added one - thus the complex effort. I'm 95% certain, based on re-watching the relevant sections of the video.

If the actual sunroof replacement process actually involved removing items from the engine bay, removing the front window, and standing on the seats in the car, I doubt anyone will ever get their car back in the state they dropped it off at a dealership. I just imagine an American sized, fast food fed dude standing on the back seat like the guy at 1:53 minutes into the video does.

I've come to the conclusion this is simply a flaw in engineering. The chassis simply isn't rigid enough to tolerate the flex allowed by the pano sunroof thus it moves, creeks, torques and rattles. I do not believe this is an issue that will ever be corrected and it's only a matter of time before Hyundai classifies as an operational norm.

Mine is now going on 150 total days in the shop over the first 20 months of ownership. Still no fix for the rattle. They told me about year ago it was a design flaw. Every single loaner Genesis or G80 I've had in the 150 days of shop time has had rattles in the sunroof. Now they are trying to fix a ticking noise on cold start. This is attempt number 4 or 5 to fix it and they swear they know what it is now...some kind of valve. We'll see when I get it back. Time for Hyundai to cough up another couple months of lease reimbursement for me. I am enjoying the 2017 G80 5.0 in black with ivory interior loaner I am driving though. Turns a lot more heads than my 2015 Genesis 3.8 in Montecito Blue.

Re: Sunroof Rattle maybe solved???

Fellas, looking at this thread makes my head hurt. But anyway I had a slight buzzy metallic type rattle that would occur when driving over rough pavement, lane makers and rumble strips or it even makes the noise on cold mornings, I had thought this was the dreaded pano roof rattle, but it isn't. I tracked it down today after installing sport aluminum pedals and it turns out to be the overhead map light/sunglass holder panel.

I took the switch panel out took it apart and was tapping it and it made the buzzy metallically noise which I thought was the pano roof. After taking it apart and reassembling it and tightening all the screws I took it on a 15mi test drive on rough I90 pavement lane markers and rumble strips which produced no buzzy metallic sound rattle the car is dead silent.

This actually drove me nuts when since I bought the car and I think I finally solved it. If it comes back I can put in some foam deadening material and or line some of the plastic pieces with felt tape to quiet it down.

I urge you go try this, this maybe totally unrelated to the panel roof rattle but my interior right now is dead silent. only thing squeaked during the trip was my burger king cup in the cup holder.

Let me know if this helped for any of you, cause I'm enjoying driving this dead silent coffin right now.

PS there are two led bulbs each in their respective holders I untwisted the side that was rattling, and reseated the bulb as well I think this might be the actual culprit. But some of the screws are pretty loose inside the panel.
