Tilt Telescopic Steering Wheel

Hi Guys,

so my steering is fixed and goes all the way up. however, the i cannot seem to save the steering position to one of the memory buttons. it will save me seat settings and side mirror settings. So i when i push the button, they adjust accordingly, however, the steering doesn't seem to adjust.

This used to work before, even though i had limited movement in my steering. I wonder if any of you are facing the same issue?

Try tuning off all your easy exit features with engine running then turn off engine. Next time you get in the car try setting the number 1 and number 2 driver set buttons on the door. Just a thought. Turn on easy exit on the steering wheel after you try this.

I did speak with my dealership about the reset, and he knew exactly what I was talking about. He said he drove a Genesis and his did the same thing. When it gets annoying, just reset it using the instructions posted earlier in this thread.

I may suggest the control module replacement next time I'm in there, but I've gone a long time since my last reset.

I honestly think that Hyundai design and engineering teams are a little ahead of their dealerships' maintenance departments. They can create a beautiful car for less money, but can't seem to provide the quality and class in the maintenance bay.

Can you turn off the easy exit features on the 3.8? I believe the only way this can be adjusted is via computer hookup at the dealer.

Yes the easy exit can be turned off in a 3.8 that has the tech option and DIS knob.

Right.....did not clarify that in my note.....omitted the tech package qualifier as I know the premium and base 3.8 do not allow without hooking up to computer.

I had my 2011 4.6 in a month ago for the module replacement. On the way home tonight, I noticed that the steering wheel seemed lower. When I went to move it up, it was at its upper limit. Making an apointment to get it fixed for the third time. Hoping that maybe they missed a reset step after the module install.

On a side note, and hopefully an unrelated one, I lost all sound after a 15 minute stop. No radio, Ipod, phone, CD, Nav, Bluetooth or Voice Command sounds at all. Stopped and restarted the car twice. After letting it sit for 20 minutes (off), I restarted it and I have sound. Still love the car; just want all the parts I paid for to work...

Until you can get it in for service try this- with the car completly off hold the tilt knob in the up position for about 10 sec. after wheel has stopped and then release the knob to center, then push the knob to the down tilt position and hold until steering wheel stops and hold knob for about 10 sec when wheel is all the way down. Now try pushing the knob to put the wheel to its max up tilt. this works most of the time.

This is my second time getting the steering wheel column work done and like around 5-6 times visits to the dealership just for this problem. Is there a legal lemon law for this type fo defect?

Actually, I just completed a lemon law process in Florida for this same defect on a 2010 Genesis. Hyundai stepped up and did a collateral exchange, meaning they replaced the car with a comparable 2011 model. I only had 8000 miles on the 2010, but still thought it was a nice thing for them to do. There was a little work to do for the process to complete and each state will have different rules to follow. However, Hyundai participates in the Better Business Bureau program which allowed them to settle the issue without having to go to a state led arbitration board. Don't know if this will work for everyone but it did for me.

Good to hear. Unfortunately, my 2011 Genny is experiencing the same problem. They have replaced countless modules and even the entire sterring column without success.

I was just at the dealership last week for a new module and I noticed two days ago it stopped working. Until they get a real fix I am just going to reset it myself.

You would think Hyundai could get this right. I have a 2008 Veracruz that offers the same tilt & telescoping and never had a problem.

My 2011 is experiencing the same issue, and I have already been told by Hyundai USA that my VIN doesn't qualify for a service bulletin repair. Whatever. I will have this addressed when I go for my first service, and will keep meticulous records just in case I have to file a lemon law claim. I love the car, but I can't describe my frustration with this issue considering how many years it has apparently been present. Why can't Hyundai get this working right in a reliable manner?

Well, this is the first squawk item I have with my new 2011 4.6.

The seat memory buttons are inconsistent, sometimes putting the seat way up and in, and the telescopic wheel doesn't come down as far as I originally had set it. Moreover, consistent with the issues I've read in this thread (haven't read the whole thing), it won't return to the detent position.

So I'll follow the advice herein to try to reset/reboot it and then go back to the dealer if I can't figure it out.

I'm still trying to learn all the rest of the stuff on the vehicle, so I'm also not going to overreact on this. But it's a bit disappointing since it's a high-frequency use feature and necessary one at that.

Had the same tilt and telescoping problems everyone else has had.

Had the Tilt and Telescope Unit replaced under warranty a couple of months ago.

It took about an hour. Have not had a problem since.

Did they charge you for mileage used, or a 100% cash-free swap?

Hyundai agreed to waive the mileage charge. We only had 8000 miles on the vehicle since it spent so much time in the shop.

My tilt is doing it again. Won't come down to the preset position and is staying higher than it was upon start.

The reset process has worked so far, but what a pain in the ass.

This is, in my opinion, a matter worthy of a formal recall by Hyundai given how widespread the problem is.

My 2011 4.6 is back in again for the tilt problem (fourth visit). I have the latest TSB module and they re-programmed the module the last time. They are talking with Hyundai to see what they want them to do.

This time the service guy off handedly remarked that "these steerinng problems are going to the death of Hyundai if they don't fix them". It appears that the service department is ALMOST as annoyed as I am with the problem.

Just as a follow up. They reset my tilt and crossed their fingers it was fixed. About 30 days later it popped up again. I was getting a little bit upset as this was going to be the fifth time for the same problem.

In the mean time, my wife drove the car out for a couple days and decided to set a memory 2 position. In doing so, the steering wheel suddenly had full movement again.

I have driven the car for about a month now and still retain full movement.

Not 100% that these are related, but crossing my fingers that this fixes my problem permanently.
