tire blow out

I haven't had any issues with the Continentals but I also don't have enough miles on them to feel qualified to rate them on durability. What I do find strange is how expensive they are compared to what some say are superior tires.
As of this morning on Discount Tire for staggered 2015 5.0:

Continental Pro Contact TX F $308, R $323
Yokohama Advan Sport A/S F #184, R $222
Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3 Plus F $235, R $252

Cannot see why I would not buy the Michelins or, at worst, Yokohamas to replace the more expensive Continentals after reading all these horror stories.
I think the tires are fine. If you hit the right pot hole, the sidewalls are getting pinched and hence compromised.

They are not defective, sort of like the old 10 speeds with the skinny tires. If the side walk gaps or cracks were too big it was a sure flat tire, then the mountain bike revolution started, except for the pros, and flat tires were not a thing on bikes.

The low profile tires are like going from mountain bikes back to the old 10 speeds.

Not a Bridgestone fan. Michelin pilot sport ps2s disappear quick $$$, but have awesome grip and are still my favorite.

2018 G90 5.0. First trip 2871miles on car. Driving 70mph in 3rd lane. low tire pressure light comes on
by the time I got over to the first lane , plop, plop, plop. Tire looses all air and by the time I get stopped
and on the shoulder, Tire is ruined. Out side sidewall is gone, inside side wall looks like new.Genesis tells me
they will send road side service to change tire for me. as there is just no place to get out and change tire.
1 1/2 hours some one shows up to change tire, with a state trooper to block lane and protect car and tire guy from getting hit
First time I was happy seeing a trooper. After donut was installed I ask Genesis where I could get a new tire. Was told
go to my dealership. Which was 1200 miles away. Was then told to take to nearest Genesis dealer which was 245 miles
away. Then was told to contact a Hyundai dealership. After contacting dealerships with in 120 miles no one had a tire
but was told they could order one for me.
This was not good news as we were on vacation and got from Glendale, AZ to fort smith, AR before tire blew . I found it
hard to believe the tire went out that fast after low warning light came on. A dealership in little rock, Ar was able to
find a Kumo tire the right size. 2 and 1/2 hours away. Costs me $250.00 and I will have to try to get continental to replace
the tire after I get home to AZ.
Genesis assist wasn't any help, other than changing the tire. I just had cancer surgery and would have to be in the road to change tire myself
Because of where car was located. Only thing Genesis could tell me was find a tire shop.
did you ever replace the tire with the chunk of rubber missing? I just discovered the same thing on my 2017 g90 but I only have 12,000 miles on the car. the chunk is about 1 1/2 inches by 3/8 in the same area you mentioned. Sounds like a defect to me. Wondered if Continental tire was willing to replace.

I'm in the still looking phase of buying a newer car but I have 19" Continentals on my Pontiac G8 GT. I think it is the tires. I just had rapid pressure loss and a ruined tire yesterday. Discount Tire could not find anything in the tire.

Oh, Discount Tire will sell Road Hazard insurance to you when you buy a new vehicle. That's something I just learned. Always assumed you had to buy the tires from the shop to buy their insurance until I learned that!

I've used the roadside assistance twice in five years. Sure is nice to have someone change the tire for you in the dark at 36 degrees and rain. The actual call is done by independent garages so they don't carry tires. Like you, I went to a tire shop.

Given the bad news about those tires from postings here, I'd ditch the Contis and get another Kumho. I hope you can recover your cost.

I had a similar experience with my new (less than 300 miles!) G90 Ultimate. Brushed a curb in a parking lot traveling less than 5 mph and the right front tire blew. I contacted roadside assistance and, 2 hours later, my car was towed to the nearest Hyundai (NOT GENESIS) dealer where he replaced the blown Continental tire with one which he had in stock for $381. I contacted Genesis Customer Care and was re-imbursed for the $381 replacement tire cost. I remain very impressed with both the G90 and Genesis Customer Service but not so much with Continental tires.

have genesis g90 2017
Just had my fifth tire blowout whil sitting in traffic
great car but afraid to drive it
contacted genesis and awaiting call back
sounds like am going back to lexus

Considering the number of Genesis's cars running Continental Tires (small) and the number of blowouts I'm reading just on this forum which is not huge has me believing there is some sort of defect with these tires. Also on tire rack you can read other owners of these tires (not Genesis) that have had issues as well. I'm almost at the point if I had to take a long trip I would either a. buy a spare and keep it in the trunk or b. replace all the Continental Tires with something else.

However the problem with option a. is the front and rear are different sizes.
I have had 4 blown tires in 6 months

I had a similar experience with a Continental tire on my 2019 G90 with just over 300 miles (!) on the car. Genesis rebated my cost to replace the tire and sent roadside service to tow the car into the replacement (Hyundai) service center. Pleased with Genesis' support, not happy with Continental tires. Planning to go with Michelin or Pirelli when it comes time to replace them.

Dump the contis. I suggest the michelin pilot sport 3 or pirelli p1.

Just as long as you have 5/32" tread, you can trade them in at Discount Tire for $20/tire. And then follow Andy's advice, get a pair of Pilot Sport 3 A/S or Pirelli PZero All Season Plus.

As a side note, don't blame Continental completely for what is happening to the ContiPro Contact's. Hyundai was also a party to the selection of the tire's formulation. I agree with other posters that Hyundai needs to continue repairing/replacing tires as they fail.

Google “low profile tires blowing out”. The search page is littered with mechanic advice against low profiles. There are forums for every car maker, and they all sound like this thread; VW, Honda, Lexus were 3 that I read.

Don’t think changing tires will fix the issue.

Go to rims about 3-4 inches smaller and make up the difference with sidewall height and the problems with blowouts and road debris will go away.

These tires had just as many blowouts as my BMW X3. What they both had in common was low profile.

Here is a Lexus forum talking about tire blowouts with low profiles.
Sound familiar?

A few different places in this G90 forum I’ve discussed my experience and resolution to this ever-recurring complaint about Conti tires. Let me give a quick recap.

I have a 2018 G90 Ultimate. I presently have 11,000 miles on it. I had been reading these forums for years and owned 2 Genesis V8’s before the G90. Based on the horror stories I read here from lots of others, 5 days after I bought the car I had the Continental tires replaced with Michelin run flats.

I think the blowouts are also as a result of such a soft tire compound. Something more rigid, like a high performance tire, would be better suited. My Michelin's also have rim protection (sidewall protrudes a bit away from the rim). What's ironic is that the Genesis/G80 were tuned based upon having an UHPAS tire (Hankook) and then chose a Grand Touring tire (ContiPro Contact) to replace it. I'm wondering if the same holds true for the G90.

Had similar Conti's on an Audi A8 and had 2 sidewall failures. My 018 G90 5.0 Ultimate has had the 2 front Conti tires replaced at 6K - Yes, Genesis footed the bill but still outrageous! Pilots here I come.

Am I really the only guy in these forums who dumped the Contis and put run flats on his G90? ;-)

Could be. Given the down sides I'm not interested in them but they do have some advantages. I can think of two tire instances is about 10 years. Once was a gashed sidewall that even a run flat may not have done any good, the other was pumped up enough that I could drive to a tire shop for repair.
If they give you more confidence, then go for it.

I have to drive 1250 miles from FL to CT and back again at least once every year and there's no way I'm pulling over with a blown Conti tire anywhere in New York or New Jersey.

A number of years ago I had a tire problem about 50 miles from home base that convinced me of the value of run flats. I was driving my BMW home from a funeral when I noticed that the car was handling a bit "different". After stopping to check, I noticed that the rear tires appeared a bit low so I pulled into the next mini-mart that I saw and used their air pump.

Both rear tires wouldn't inflate even though they appeared perfect from the side. Because they were Michelin run flats (standard on all that year BMWs I believe) the tires were low, but not flat. I could still drive on them so I decided to stop at the next gas station with a lift to see why they wouldn't inflate. When they put the car up on a lift I couldn't believe what I saw. The inside of both rear tires were completely shredded! I don't mean a puncture. I mean ribbon-stripped shredded. How it happened I didn't know but these tires were definitely dead.

The fact that I could still drive on them convinced me then and there that any car I owned from then on that i used for more than local driving would have run flats and i do to this day. Anyone need a complete set of G90 Conti's with 200 miles on them ;-)
