Turning ESC off ...for real...With Video Proof!!

Oh, very nice. Now all we need to do is come up with a circuit diagram to modify the ESC button so that when you press it, a timer disconnects the fuse, toggles the ESC button's old connection, then reconnects the fuse. I could have whipped that up back in college, but I'm afraid I'm a bit rusty. Anybody?? If nobody else can do it, I'll have to sit down and figure it out.

Still dying for some instructions on how to set up a switch in the car to turn the ESC off!

Done! Ill post it all on Monday! I left my camera cable at work!

Works Perfectly!!!!

Good work!
When you press the esc button normally with out doing the fuse thingy what does it disable and what does it leave on? I haven't messed with it yet.

Anybody try this on a V6 model?

Here we go!

**DISCLAIMER - do this at your own risk! Please excuse my soldering joints. The irons and methods used at work do great but without the right tools at home...it really makes for a nasty joint. It does work though! HA!**

As of this moment, I have yet to find a hole in which to run the wires through the firewall so I have them routed through the hinge on the drivers side door, through the fuse panel and into the floor. Currently the wires and the switch are dangling beside the parking brake. I ran out of time to complete the install.

However, it was SUPER easy and works flawlessly!

Check out the pictures below...I have not finalized the installation yet but the pictures show how the mod is done and how easy it was to do it.

Pic 1 shows all the items needed (well, you dont need the spade connectors...I thought I would)
Pic 2 shows the switches. LOOK FOR THE LETTERS NC this mean Normally Closed ***THIS IS A MUST***
Pic 3 shows the spare 10 A fuse that I took some scissors to. basically just remove the connection.
Pic 4 shows the lousy solder joint.
Pic 5 shows the fancy inline fuse
pic 6 shows the fuse box and the modified fuse installed
pic 7 shows the inline fuse installed and the 2 wires for the switch
pic 8 shows that there is plenty of room for storage of the wires.

COMING SOON

Pic 9 will show how to get through the firewall
Pic 10 will show the installed switch.

Now, at first I thought I had messed something up because when tripping the fuse, hitting the ESC OFF button and then releasing the button....nothing happened. Come to find out, you have to push the button for 7 sec. THEN hit your ESC off button and continue to hold the switch for another 7 seconds. After that 14-15 sec lapse, you should see just the letters ESC on your console.

Works perfectly! However, I forgot about the wires in the floorboard and as we headed out to church on Sunday morning my wife said "WHAT HAVE YOU DONE!" Oh dear...I told her it was a lighting mod....HA! Kidding, I told her what it really was and she said, "you had better not have your child in the car when you plan on getting stupid!" No worries honey...Im not THAT stupid! HA!

Anywho, if any of you have the time and can figure out how to get through the firewall...let me know!

Ping - Can you let the tires free when stoped and going straight? Just wondering.

Also, when you turn the car on and pull the fuse, does the ESC light go on? No reason to press the ESC button right?

Ping can correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe there are 2 methods to disable ESC.

1. Pull the fuse and leave it out. This has the side effect of no speedometer, or ESC. However it can also leave a code on your car's computer that can be seen by the dealer.

2. Pull the fuse, press the ESC button, replace the fuse. This causes a momentary disabling of the ESC system that supposedly does not result in a code being set, nor does it disable the speedometer. It will however disable ESC completely until you press the button again, or turn off the car.

In both cases the ESC light should be lit.

You almost nailed it!

Option #1 is probably not the best way to go about it...as mentioned earlier, my dealer asked if I had issues with the ESC system because he noticed a code was logged. I then told him what I had done and he said "that explains it." We then tried Option #2 as listed below and no code was ever logged...therefore, I guess you can say we can "get away with it!"

However, as mentioned in Option 2, the only way to RESET the ESC is by turning your car off and re-starting it. The ECS OFF button becomes disabled once you trip the system. If tripped correctly, you will only see ESC on the dashboard. If you see ESC OFF, you have not performed the sequence correctly.

1. Pull the fuse and leave it out. This has the side effect of no speedometer, or ESC. However it can also leave a code on your car's computer that can be seen by the dealer.

If you use this option, 3 lights will illuminate. I think they are BRAKE, ECS, and one other. Your speedo, nav, rpm, cruise, and fuel gage will not work.

2. Pull the fuse, press the ESC button, replace the fuse. This causes a momentary disabling of the ESC system that supposedly does not result in a code being set, nor does it disable the speedometer. It will however disable ESC completely until you press the button again, or turn off the car.

This is best! Remember that for some reason you need to allow 5-7 seconds before you hit the ESC OFF button once the fuse is removed or tripped...otherwise it will not disable the ESC.

There again, if you see ESC you have done it correctly, if you see ESC OFF, you have not.

BURN EM'!

YES!!! But this is mostly because I have 60,000 mile tires. They are not nearly as sticky as the Dunlops. My Continentals have a harder rubber compound which yields to less grip. If the Dunlops were still installed and had decent tread left...spinning from a dead start would only give a chirp...not what you see in my latest video.

Also, when you turn the car on and pull the fuse, does the ESC light go on? No reason to press the ESC button right?

Not that I'm aware of. Yes, the lights comes on but as soon as I replace the fuse, the light goes away. From my limited research, hitting the ESC OFF button is a necessity.

Re: Turning ESC off ...for real

Correct! The ESC is also known as a "nanny." Traction, is a MUST in any situation and when traction is lost, the NANNY steps in to say..."Hey, wait a minute....if you dont know how to drive with little or no traction...I will MAKE YOU HAVE TRACTION!" Some cars ESC is more disabling than others and by far, the Genesis is the worst I have seen yet. The Genesis is totally diabled when the nanny kicks in which can be even more deadly than not having it at all.

Spinning your wheels in not always a bad thing when you know how to handle it but an over compensated ESC system will ruin any hopes of a quick getaway.

I dont mind the ESC...especially in wet/snowy conditions because it actually helps...but here in the south, I have no use for it!

When ESC is truly off, via the mod below, YOU take full ownership of the throttle. If you want to chirp...chirp away, if you want to ball the tires...smoke em, if you want to drift a corner, drift away!

Just remember that you are on your own and if you over do it, especially in a corner, the Nanny will not step in and say "settle down son" but the DITCH will let you know!

:D
yep, that "bar-ditch" is a real f@cker!

Just had the ladies here at work solder my switch together.

Using company resources at work for personal use....nahhh!;)

Should have the switch mounted by this evening.

STILL WAITING FOR A WAY TO RUN THE WIRES THROUGH THE FIREWALL...ANYBODY....BUELER...BUELER...BUELER???

If I dont hear from anybody by the weekend, I will spend some time and try to figure it out!

If there are no factory gromits you might have to drill a hole. ...but there must be some factory gromits somewhere.... keep us updated. thanks!

Pinggolf,

I'll be working on this project myself this weekend (I hope) if times permits

Got a huge Golf tournament on Saturday and I need to focus on kicking this guys ass before.

Will definitely keep you posted.

Oh and thanks for sharing your project.

FYI, I'll be doing a simple on off switch system myself.

Can anyone tell me what the ESC off button does if not used in conjunction with the fuse pull?

Also I tried this fuse pull/esc/fuse replace on my 2010 and in addition to the ESC light being on the EPB light was also illuminated. I tried to spin the tires and nothing happened.
What is EPB light for?

Ping,

Looks like the ladies do a better job with the soldering iron than you do:D

As for getting through the firewall, it looks like there might be a good spot just above and behind the parking brake (looks like there is a vacuum line or some other tubular conduit) that runs through there, and it appears to come out in the engine compartment under the box up against the firewall on the driver's side next to the brake master cylinder (you'll have to pull that box to access where it comes through the firewall). Just a thought. Other than that, I'd recommend tracing the wiring harnesses and see if there an easy spot to snake a wire through.

im putting a switch to my fuse through my firewall tomorrow. will post install pics and a video demo'ing the difference from 0-60

um. does anyone know how i can get the wires through the firewall? if i cant, i just thought of a good idea. have a really short wire and just keep the switch under the hood or even still in the fuse box
