If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. Turning ESC off ...for real...With Video Proof!!

Re: Turning ESC off ...for real

I wonder if the ECM could track this mod.

If it did, it would probably show up as a malfunction in the system...not as a user modification.

In the event a problem arose, I would remove the wires in one quick pull before the car made it to the dealer! ;)

Im sure you're right - but I seem to recall Nissan GTR owners that were trashing their transmissions and the ECM logged and recorded them doing 0-60 "launches". ECMs can keep datalogs which can be used to void warranties. Not an apples to apples comparison here, but something that hangs in the back of my mind when I see these hacks.

Looks like fun though!

Re: Turning ESC off ...for real

Here we go!

GCTLG-----PROPS TO YOU MAN FOR AN AWESOME JOB! I dont want to steal any of your thunder...its all YOU!

My findings:

I did not have the opportunity to try it out last night...as I kinda forgot. EEEK!

So I got to work this morning and opened up the thread again to read some additional comments.

Well, I couldnt stand it...so at lunch I crunk the car, popped the hood, removed the ESP fuse, hit the ESC button and reinstalled the fuse. I then shut the hood and got in the car.

Initially, I was kinda skeptical until I saw the ESC light continuously lit. Then I thought...well, he may have just cracked the code!

I lowered the windows and took off making sure I didnt spin while inside the compound here at work.:o I made it to the traffic light and took a left turn heading for some lunch. I patiently waited at the red light with butterflies in my stomach and then the light turned green. Well, my patience ran thin so I slammed the throttle to the floor...HOLY SMOKES!!!!:eek: As I drifted around the corner IN 2ND GEAR into a beautiful transition I think I may have pinched one off (TOOTED)...as well as the driver behind me...HA!:p

I thought to myself...I just want to give QCTLG a good ole butt slap like they do in football and say "Good Job Son!" (I'm not gay, by the way)

Anywho, the plus side to this is EVERYTHING WORKED...EVEN THE CRUISE CONTROL!!!

LETS DO THIS!!!

Awesome news PINGGOLF, I'm happy it work good...I'm puzzled that your cruise control worked? Mine did NOT work at all.
I was an hour and a 1/2 away from home and could not get the cruise to set. I pulled out of at the next exit, shut the car and turned it back on so I can use the cruise.

I'm going to do it again tomorrow and see.

Thanks for trying it and thanks for the kind words but I discovered it by accident. Very lucky!:p

Now on to the modification stage

Re: Turning ESC off ...for real

So last night I purchased an inline fuse, some wire and a switch and had fully intended on doing the installation last night...however, the engine was HOT, it was HOT outside and my thermometer in the Garage read 118F.

I just couldnt do it. Im fat. HA!

On the other hand, I managed to make a short iphone quality video and upload it to youtube. Enjoy!

Very cool. Do we think this will work on the V6?

HA HA HA!

It just so happened I filled up on the way to work that morning!

Let me put it this way, I put 18.9 gals in her! HA Thats a new HIGH for me...or LOW...however you look at it!:D

You've got a good eye!

Re: Turning ESC off ...for real

When ESC is truly off, via the mod below, YOU take full ownership of the throttle.

Au contraire mon frere...in the Genny you own the accelerator peddle, and that's about it (the Genny's a "drive by wire" car...no direct linkage between your foot and the throttle on the engine).

Bypassing the ESC got rid of one nanny. You've still got the TCM [thottle control module] (and all the talking it does with its other computer buddy, the ECM [engine control module]) between the accelerator and the throttle.

Some may not consider the TCM to be a "nanny" per se, but it still leaves you as merely a "voting member on the board" concerning what the throttle will do. That minor detail aside, I can't wait to give it a try!

I wonder how long it will take, with Hyundai reading this thread, before they correct this "bug" from future production?

HA! Hopefully they will fix the issue for when you push ESC OFF and the ESC is not OFF! (I get what your saying though:rolleyes:)

The button LIES! Its a LIAR!!! It SPLITS-HAIRS and is FALSE-ADVERTISEMENT!!!

The ESC is never truly OFF!

:D:D:D:D HA!

Who knows what they will do...

Tell you what, out of all the little nit picky things I have found wrong with the Genesis (cheap fog light housings, cooled seat issue) by far the one that PI$$E$ me off the MOST is the ESC button!

It should say ESC "SOMEWHAT" OFF!

The ESC (traction control) should be off when you are stuck in a snow bank, and you must spin the wheels a bit to get out. I've had other cars where the instructions were to switch the traction control off in order to get unstuck from the snow. True, I've never been stuck in the snow with the Genesis, however I could be called up to Penfield in the middle of winter for a family emergency, or I could be out in Roswell in the winter, and have to drive in a lot of snow. (Saw snow in Roswell last December).

Although I see no need to switch the ESC off normally, when stuck in the snow, it should be switched off.

Note that ESC is normally to keep the car from going off the road when going "too fast" in curves, by applying one or more brake, however the system used on our Genesis' also uses the ESC as a "traction control" by applying a brake to the spinning wheel to allow the non spinning wheel power to pull you out. This is not the way positraction works, but it does work.

I am dying to get a switch set up in the car where I can turn off the ESC... Someone please do it soon as post some pics/instructions!!!

I just busted a gut laughing at this thread! I'm a bit more quiet at stop lights when people are around!... not PING! I'll be doing this tomorrow.... I'll see if I can take a vid.

PING -

have you been able to let the tires free when in "D"? Or only manual shifting?

I just lit my tires on fire! Maybe not actual fire, but I just ran down to the local school parking lot (Saturday, no kids around) and peeled off a couple of dounuts! AAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!

Looking for new tires now.... lol....

Thanks!!

Jim

I believe in the 10MY forward, you can't activate cruise control if you have ESC off. Not too convenient...

Ok, just tried this out of course! This only benefits me when turning to break the tires loose. In a stright line I can only spin the tires about 2 feet before full traction.

I'm feeling better each day I drive with the new tires! Sticky icky icky!:D:D The tires have so much damn traction, it's hard to spin them at all, unless turning. All this power is fun, but somewhat meaningless, unless you can put the power to the ground:cool:

FWIW, I just got the "all clear" from the mechanic at Hyundai. David drives an S2000 with custom turbo, pipes...well, you name it he's got it. He's the coolest tech. ever and I talked to him about the ESC and the latest news about it. He said that the method used is the best for the system. He said if you take the fuse out...and leave it out, a code will be saved to the computer...whether you know it or not. However, we tried the new method and no code was ever shown. Which is great news! The reason this discussion came up was because the computer flashed a code to him and he looked it up. He called me and asked if I had a traction control issue...then I fessed up! HA!

SO, I guess we are good to go with the new method and so I will be installing the switch sometime this week. I will document everything...I promise!

Excellent news PINGGOLF, I will be doing the switch mod too sometime this week when time permits...

FYI,
I'm working with an engineer to try to get the video working while in motion.
That's my next battle with this car that I love soo much!!!

Regards,

OK - So I gave this mod a try with very little success because it was mid day Saturday and to many people around.

I started the car, pulled the fuse, looked at the cluster, noticed that the ESC light was on, pressed the ESC button anyway which didn't do anything, put the fuse back in, spun the tires a tad bit.

That was it... did I miss anything? I was only driving in "D" and from a stop straight on I couldn't get the tires to spin. I didn't try manual.

ps. my cruise control still worked.
