  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I forgot how poorly my Genesis is in the Snow...

Oh man, I had the pleasure of driving my Genesis in the snow over the weekend in New York. Mind you, I've lived here most of my life and am used to driving in all weather conditions.

BUT I had a very difficult time with this car. I was constantly worried I would slip out or worse yet, get stuck when the car stopped at a light especially on any sort of incline. Even when I downshifted without applying the brakes, the back end would slide ever so slightly, enough to make my heart stop.

Anyway, I absolutely love this car. But if it snows any more than it did a couple of days ago, I think that would be the limit for me.

Yes, the Genesis is much more difficult to handle in the snow and ice than other RWD vehicles that I have owned.

The problem can be solved in a variety of ways. I have fixed mine. Read through this entire thread and you can choose the method that works best for your situation.

Almost died the first time I drove my 2011 4.6 in the snow on the way back from Niagara Falls. Ordered Blizzaks as soon as I got home. I now run Cont DW in the summer and change over to the Blizzaks the first week of November. Genny does just fine now in NE Ohio. Better than my wife's FWD Venza. Of course the 442 Convertible never even sees rain let alone snow.

For what it's worth, you can use the manual tranny mode to start in 2nd gear from a standstill. It is helpful.

I'm in Montreal and I can emphatize with you. we got 30 CM (12 inches sunday).

That being said, the snow tires make a huge difference. We actually have a law here that states that cars driven in quebec MUST be equipped with WINTER (not all season) tires from Dec 15th, to March 15th.

I have the same all season's as you and put Hakkapelita's on, and I didnt get stuck yet. Unfortunately, with all season's on I had the same experience opinion as you. It was like driving a cow on skates.

I've had my 2012 3.8 out in a few snow storms since putting the Michelin X-Ice 3 tires on, and I don't think it is too bad at all. In fact it is better then I was expecting having come from 4-banger front wheel drive cars.

If the complaints are by those who choose not to install winter tires, then my suggestion is to get some.. Otherwise it is like not wearing a coat in the winter and then complaining that it's cold....

For those of us that spend most of the winter in Florida, you don't have to install dedicated snow tires and go through the hassle of mounting and dismounting tires twice a year. A set of Conti DWS Extreme Contact will get you though just fine.

But you do have to know how to drive a RWD Car.:)

So, we got some more snow dumped on us in NY yesterday... and this time around, the Genny was great. Limited slipping and handled just fine. I think from the past couple of days, I've learned how much snow it can handle and when I should just park it at home.

20 years driving in various parts of the Northeast and I've never had any snow tires (including my Miata in Boston!).

 I guess you are correct.. If you don't drive in snow, you don't need snow tires...

And then there is the issue of reading comprehension.

 I'm not sure about that.. The first thing you indicated is that you "spend most of the winter in Florida".

Yup, 'Most' not 'All'..... So, I drive in snow for awhile.

I know this topic has been beaten to death, but as a recent Winter "Snowflake Symbol" tire convert, I wanted to chime in. Like many southern Wisconsinites, I never bought or used winter tires. I assumed that if you had an AWD and FWD car, you could get by with All Season tires.

Then I bought an Audi A6 in 2007. Despite having full time AWD, the performance all season tires it had on it caused the car to spin on any amount of snow, ABS going nuts, front end pushing at every turn, and I even got stuck in my flat driveway! I bought my first winter tires (Blizzak WS 50) and it was as if my car was transformed into a snowmobile.

While I loved the acceleration gain that the winter tires provided, I was more blown away by how much better the car braked without ABS activating and the front end not pushing through snowy intersection turns.

I think winter tires are like a drug - once you try them, you become addicted to the traction and confidence they provide. If you've never driven on winter tires, you don't know what you are missing.

While I also have winter shoes on my Genesis, I will have to admit that there is a newer A/S out there that is pretty good.

We just bought Pirelli Cinturato P7 A/S Plus tires for our 2009 Elantra. I am truly amazed at how well they perform in snow, and are very quiet running. Jury is still out on ice performance, though ...

Highest ranked Grand Touring A/S on Tire Rack right now (especially for winter weather) is why I went with them. Not regretting it at all so far. They have them in Genesis sizes as well. Might be another legit alternative for those that don't want winter tires.

The Pirelli's look very good!...They may not have even been available a few weeks ago when I bought my Continentals. They only have about 80 reviews on them at Tire Rack currently. The Conti's have over 3,000.

..I have been driving on my Conti DWS tires for a couple weeks now and I am beyond very satisfied. They work so well in snow and ice that I would not even consider the hassle of Extra Snow Tires.

I have been really impressed with the factory Michelin's on my 2013. It is much better in the snow than my Chrysler 300 ever thought of being

Snow tires are the only way to go. I travel constantly for work and recently was driving through a MA blizzard that got over a foot of snow. I had no issues driving while trucks, tractor trailers and awd cars struggled. It was coming down so hard it froze my wipers and filled ice around the wipers. Had to pick about 6 inches of solid ice out from under the wipers when I stopped. It was that bad out and the car drove just fine.

I know its an old post but I have never driven a car worst in the snow than this 2012 3.8 sedan. (Toronto area). I had a 1999 Aurora with traction control and with Michelin a/s never had any issues. So does any one have a recommendation on best winter tires for this machine?

thanks

Lots of suggestions in this very thread. And I was the OP and you will read how I eventually solved my problem.
