Oil Consumption in '12 R-Spec

I put 44K miles on my '12 RSpec. Noticed oil consumption at about a quart/2200 miles or so, a level which was not "actionable" under warranty. I think these motors require 10K miles to truly bed in. This is reflected in less oil consumption and better gas mileage.
The distinguishing feature of this motor is direct fuel injection. I sort of "fixed" the problem by increasing crankcase ventilation - there is a tube running from valve cover to intake. I installed a simple catch can en route. Found a about a half cup of oil that had condensed out and was lying on the inside of my intake manifold.
I think this all may be a result of poor ring seal. My 2014 Equus (same motor) used only a cup of oil in a recent 8K trip, which indicates to me that Hyundai has resolved this problem.
 
Hey all, thought I would give you an update on my 2012 R-spec. I've been approved for the replacement of the short block. Should have the car back in another week. Total time for this process has been almost 3 weeks. Can't wait to get her back, getting tired of driving my loaner, 2016 Elantra 1.8L

Although, the Elantra is really good on gas and takes regular fuel and only cost $20 to fill lol.
Good 6-speed automatic tranny.
1.8L engine is weak
A/C works incredible! Better than the Genesis.


Once I get the Genesis back after the first 1000 miles I will be switching to Pennzoil Ultra 5-30 synthetic oil. Has anyone else used this oil? I've read good things about it.
 
That will be a great oil for the Gennie. Use with confidence.
 
I have used it. The gennie did just fine on it.

As far as the 5W20 being too thin...it's not...Unless you track your Genesis consistently. With that said, the 5W30 will not hurt anything either. If anything, your MPG might drop by a few tenths.
 
UPDATE:

Car was at the dealership for almost 1 month.

I just got the car back from the dealership after getting the shortblock replaced as well as new spark plugs, gaskets, etc.

Only drove about 35 minutes so far and she already feels better just driving around town keeping the rpm's below 3k.

I'm guessing the compression is much better now that everything is new.

Dealer said to drive slow for first 1500 miles, then I'm gonna change the oil to Pennzoil Ultra Synthetic.
After that I'll let her rip!
 
Dealer put a NEW Long Block in my 2012 R Spec at 28,500. Took 1 week. Great service.
 
My dealer dropped off my car last night, I'm 10 miles from them. I was to do a 500 mile oil compression test and take it back in. I drove the car around the block a few times, the oil light came on, I checked the oil, I was already 4-5 quarts low....

There is no fix for this is there? I Need a new engine don't I?
 
Or to put the oil plug back in the one you've got...

It's either something simple or I am setting a new world record for losing oil. 1/2 a quart a mile..lol....sheesh....

It's possible the plug is in, just not tightened and seated properly. I had that happen, once. The dealer was very sheepish and apologetic about it.

I've had the car since January. Had an oil change around April and then one in July. August something my oil light came on. I pulled into a station and I was 5 quarts low.

I took the car in three weeks ago for other issues...they gave it a oil change and dropped off the car last night so I could do a 500 mile consumption test.

The dealer is 10 miles from me, they probably changed the oil two weeks ago. I drove the car around the block and the oil light came on, I was at least 4 quarts low

Car is back in the shop.
 
I purchased a 2012 RSpec with 47000 miles in excellent shape. Dealer said they changed the oil when the received the car. I thought it was quite dirty when I checked it and a bit burnt smelling. I changed it again immediately after purchase with full synthetic. I have recently begun to hear what sounds like lifter tick or even rod knock from time to time. I had it into the dealer last week for a cruise control issue and asked them to listen to what I was hearing. They said it was normal. Yesterday I checked the oil just for the hell of it and I was floored that there was "NO" oil showing up on the dip stick. NONE! Once I picked myself up off of the driveway and wiped the sweat from my forehead I called the dealer and gave them maybe a bit more ear bending than called for but at that point I needed therapy. I put 5700 miles on this 40'something thousand mile 2012 "high end" machine and this thing has drank 3 full quarts of oil in the meantime. This is a major issue and I'm going to press the dealer to come clean on this and replace my motor. There is no car on earth manufactured in the 21st century that burns oil at this rate, especially none in the $50K range. My last Lexus GS430 had 300,000 miles on it when I traded it in. I burned 1/2 quart of Mobil 1 in the 12,000 miles between oil changes. This is just ridiculous! I'm still in a deep funk over this. Anybody had this issue addressed with a motor replacement under warranty?
 
Yes, it would be nice if it was that simple but this thing is dry can be underneath. I just can not believe any car could use a third of its oil capacity in a 6000 mile stretch. Just a giant manufacturing defect. Not to mention the downstream peripheral damage to sensoes, emissions system, etc. and who knows what else. I'd really like to hear from somebody who has actually had something done about it. There's very little other than a profuse leak or bad piston rings that would cause a car to lose this much oil in such a short. Of time. I just find it incredible that this type of thing could pass the engineering test and make it out of factory. This is simply the blocking and tackling of engine manufacturing. All of my cars from the 70's in the eighties burned only but a fraction of what's going on here and they leaked profusely most of the time. It also makes my 745iL look seemingly japanese in this respect. I'll keep updating as I work my way through the red tape. Thanks for all the input.

I've been thinking (dangerous). A car using lots of oil surely wouldn't pass the EPA emission standards. I wonder if they know about all these problems?
 
I noticed when I pulled in to put fuel in the vehicle yesterday, it was cold enough that I was seeing vapor from my exhaust but oddly enough I wasn't seeing vapor from any other cars exhaust. The vapor didn't smell like oil and didn't look like oil burning as you frequently C with cars having a problem like this where the exhaust is thick and a bit blue.
 
My 2012 RSpec did use about a quart of oil every 2000 miles. I figured it was "blow-by". I removed the throttle body (for 10mm bolts) and found about a cup of oil on the floor of the intake manifold. I installed an aftermarket "catch can" in the rubber line from the valve cover to the intake manifold. That seemed to help, but I grew impatient and traded the car for a 2013 V6 Genesis, which did not use oil.
Since then I am back to a V8, this time a 2014 Equus. I am happy to report oil consumption of less than a pint on a 8000 mile trip.
My sense is Hyundai used inferior piston rings on the early 5.0 liter motors.
