Oil Consumption in '12 R-Spec

I've posted this very same thing back a few months ago. I purchased my 2012 RSpec in September with 50K or so miles. I changed the oil immediately with a synthetic. I drove about 6k miles before I decided to check the oil after hearing something similar to "rod knock" at startup and while gettting on it a little that day. I pulled the dip stick and there was no oil showing up. Zero. And no warning light either. THE MECHANIC AT SOUTH CHARLOTTE HYUNDAI SAID THE OIL "WARNING" LIGHT ON THE CAR DOESN'T WARN OF "LOW" OIL LEVEL RATHER IT WARNS OF "LOW" OIL PRESSURE. THAT'S ONE THE MOST RIDICULOUS THINGS I'VE EVER HEARD. Is there a car on the planet that doesn't have a low oil level warning light? I think not. Low oil levels cause low oil pressure. Just absurd. My Porsche throws a warning at the 1/2 quart mark and it has a 9 quart capacity. That's a warning when just 5% of the oil is gone!

So back to the consumption issue... 3+ quarts used in 6000 miles on a 7500 mile synthetic oil. Essentially 3 quarts of 7.2 total capacity was just "gone". That's 42% of my oil just gone in 6000 miles. AND NO WARNING LIGHT!! Not only is that disturbing in itself but what's more disturbing is that I didn't know it, there was no warning light and what damage has been done to this motor because of running at low oil levels? Again, I asked about a warning light at the service desk as I did with the mechanic) and got a different answer this time. Ronny conveniently stated that the oil level warning light (so now there appears to be an oil level warning light all of the sudden) comes on when the oil level is 3.25 quarts low. That's just absurd and rather insulting in addition to being amusing. So when 1/2 of your oil is gone you'll get the warning? Just unbelievable...

This is a blatant defect and Hyundai is doing everythign in their power to dodge the consequences. They tell you that one quart every 2000 miles is normal. Then they caveat that by saying it varies based on the "serverity" of the driving conditions. I asked what that meant and they stated that oil consumption will vary based on start/stop driving v.s. highway driving. Both statements are just absurd and extremely insulting Any mechanic you'd ever talk to about this type of issue (11 out of 10, yes 11 out of 10) would tell you without question (100%) that this is a severe defect with the piston rings (manufacturing defect and/or wrong size rings) and requires the motor be replaced or torn apart for ring replacement.

Hyundai on the other hand plays the game of running the oil consumption test and having it checked out at 1000 miles only to find no oil consumption problem. I took it in to South Charoltte Hyundai for my test. They changed the oil, taped the dipstick and marked the drain plug so that I couldn't "cheat" and drain oil. Like this is exactly what I like to do with my spare time. Really.. They told me to come back in 1000 miles to check the level... Well, wouldn't you know it, when they checked my level at the 1000 mile mark the level was actully above the "full" line! Miraculously now my car is producing oil instead of using it at a 3 quart/6000 mile rate! Go figure!

The bottom line here is that the oil consumption is not linear throughout the life of the oil. The rate of consumption increases at an accelerated rate as the milage on the oil increases of course. When your rings are too small and the oil thins you burn more oil. Not rocket science. You really start to see it at about 3K. I'm on another oil change and I've put 2 quarts in at about the 4K mark and it could use about another 1/2 quart. Hyundai knows exactly what they're doing and it's criminal.

This is a black and white as it gets. I've got call into Hyundai corporate and I'm pressing hard this time. They've advised me that I've got to work with the dealer as they (corporate) can't do anything without the dealers direction. When I brought up the fact that this is a wide spread, well known issue in the Hyundai owner community (not an isolated incident) they proceeded to inform me that they (Hyudnai) doesn't recognize any commentary/claims from forums (like genesysowners.com) that are not Hyundai sponsored. So now Hyundai is denouncing the validity of all social media outlets unless Hyundai sponsored (and censored). Sounds like Kim Jong-un may be on the board here...

In any case, I'm just disgusted and disappointed that I didn't stick with Lexus. I traded in my GS with 300K miles hen I bought this car.. I ran Mobil 1 in my GS and did 10-12K oil changes. My GS burned about 1 quart between changes. I guess 3 quarts in 6K is now the new "normal". The upside is that I may never need to change the oil on my RSpec because I'm constantly putting new oil in it. Guess I still need to change the filter!

I purchased a 2012 R-Spec (Titanium/Black for you nuts who care) this summer. I love the car, and find it a fantastic value for what you get. I baby my car. I followed the optional break-in procedure to the letter. I'm meticulous with checking fluids, maintenance task, and tracking. I've been having to add about two quarts and a half of oil every 1000 miles or so. I took it in for an oil change at 5,000 miles, figuring something was wrong and I might as well start the process of an oil consumption test. I was a few quarts low when the dealer changed the oil (which is almost 9 quarts of oil / 5,000 miles). I have no noticeable leaks under my parking spot, I had a buddy tailgate me for about 50 miles and he had no oil splatter on his bumper. He did say that I have occasional clouds of dark smoke out of my tailpipes, but I was unable to reliably recreate the conditions which caused the issue. My mileage has been pretty good on the highway (27.4 last tank!), but around town I only get about 17-18. I haven't noticed any loss of power, or any other compression-loss symptoms. My initial guess is that my rings didn't seat, but I'm not positive. Does anyone have any other ideas? How much oil have your R-Specs been consuming?

On another note, my dealer's service department has been fantastic in helping me with this problem, I was very impressed. I was nervous after reading a few of your horror stories regarding Hyundai service. Mine had free coffee, TV, WiFi, and loaner vehicles. They were courteous (not quick, but I assume [hope] that's because they are being thorough).

I leave you with a warning. Just because your car is new does not mean you can neglect standard preventative checks and maintenance!!! Check your oil and transmission levels at least every two fill ups. It only takes 30 seconds! Use the paper towels next to the gas pump to wipe the dipsticks.

Is there a car on the planet that doesn't have a low oil level warning light?

Yes, the vast majority of them. Virtually all modern cars have a LOW OIL PRESSURE gauge or light. Practically none of them have a low oil level warning.

Excessive oil consumption in early 2012 R-spec engines is a well known problem having to do with the use of German-made oil rings that were defective. Hyundai has apparently been pretty good at replacing these engines but has not necessarily warned owners of affected cars of the possibility of problems. Sounds like you got one of those.

This is a blatant defect and Hyundai is doing everythign in their power to dodge the consequences. They tell you that one quart every 2000 miles is normal.

Did you get this answer from Hyundai or the dealer? Sounds like the dealer. Modern engines under normal use should not use significant amounts of oil.

I have owned my R-spec since 12/12 and never had to add oil between changes (every 5,000 miles BTW). I use Mobil-1 20W-40 because I live in the desert and we get lots of dust and high temps here.

The build date of my R-spec is April 18, 2012 and that seems to correspond with others who have not experienced the oil consumption problem. If your build date is prior to that I would expect Hyundai to consider it one of the German ring problem engines.

Did they show you the level on the dipstick just before they taped it up? Sounds to me like they over-filled it just a little too much, so it would show normal when you came back in 1000 miles.

They will not fix your engine. And waste your time giving you runaround. Get a lemon lawyer. Talk to them.. Make sure to keep all service records. Sometimes they dont even give the service record to you. Everytime you go in. Get the initial work order and the work they did to fix it.

I got a lawyer because of their bullshit. Also this problem is not just with hyundai. If you had a lexus with this oil consumption issue, they would likely give u the runaround. Subaru and audi got sued not long ago because of oil consumption issues even on their 4 cyclinder models. Audi 2.0T also has bad oil consumption.

I say get a lawyer. And if any of these lawyers wants to do a class action lawsuit make sure you let everyone on this forum know.

Mine was burning averaging 1qt per 1000 miles. Strange as it is. Sometimes it would burn more and sometimes it would burn less.

For some people the engine doesnt consume any oil until later. Mine started near 7000 miles on odo after 2 oil changes. It wasnt too bad in the beginning but got upto 1.3 qts per 1000 miles.

I tried different oil brands and viscosity and filters but made not much difference. I got slightly better results with conventional oil.

I did few oil consumption tests and the dealer doesn't have the final say on how to fix your engine. They will call corporate office for the decision bc under warranty they always send out the old part back to the corporate or the dealership has to pay for the new part.

In my case the corporate told my dealership it was normal to burn oil. Cylinder engines arent suppised to burn oil unless something is wrong with it. It wasnt designed to burn oil period. Only rotary engines burn oil by design. I got fed up with the car and got a lawyer. If your car is under warranty they have to fix it. If they dont they are violating your warranty rights and in some cases the car might be a lemon. And you dont necessarily have to have taken your car in many times for the same problem for it to apply. If it is a serious problem which decreases functionality or safety it could be just one time of attempt to fix it amd be classifoed as lemon. The lawyers know the ins and outs not the consumer. I suggest talking to one if you feel they are cheating you.

No they did not. I'm sure it was over filled.

Thanks for the note. So what ultimatey happened in your case? Still pending? New motor? If anybody has had success with motor replacement I would appreciate the details so that I can press Hyundai Corporate with precedent. Thank you..

It is still pending. I didn't get a new motor. Like I said they told me 1 qt losing oil per 1000 mile is normal.

So that is when I called hyundai customer service and demanded them to fix or return my money. They did neither so I took it to court.

Let you know how my case ends up.

Someone here said take it to another dealer. It doesn't work if the corporate office says no like I stated. It's not the dealership who has final say. It is up to the corporate. However by taking it to another dealership you can start another oil consumption test. And at the end it all depends on what the corporate says.

Also try the Quaker state oil regular 5w20 oil if u think it will help your situation. Not synthetic the standard oil.
I tried Mobil 1 Synthetic both 5w20 5w30.
I tried black bottle castrol synthetic 5w20 5w30. Synthetics burned the most. Especially the mobil 1 5w20 synthetic. Oil grade didnt make much difference but 5w30 seemed little better. I tried high quality oil filters including oem and that didnt make much difference. One thing I didnt try was running on 91 oct gas which i doubt would make any difference. My conclusion is if it burns that much oil doesnt matter what you use it will consume oil. And i am not sure why it doesnt consume as much at times. Sometimes it consumed only .5 quarts per 1000 mileand as much as 1.3 quarts per 1000 miles. Also their are some people who didnt have the issue and the problem occuring at 30k miles.

So far using quaker state has been the best at not consuming oil and thst gave me one time .5 quarts of consuming oil after 1000 miles.

Also their are some who have blown the 5.0 engine. And the funny thing is its mainly 2012s. You can search for it in this forum site. If you blow the engine during regular driving they will definitely replace the engine for free if it still under warranty. That's what ive been seeing.

Also before you drive off ask them to look at the dipstick together and take a picture of it.

Sometimes they overfill by tad. When they did mine they overfilled by 1-2 mm higher than the F mark. I caught them doing that towards the end. And I am not the only one who experienced that. It seems like you did too. Google subaru oil consumption test overfill and you will see that they do this sometimes.

This is why I said talk to a lawyer if it seems they wont fix it. The lawyers seen it all how the manufacturer cheats the oil tests and the excuses they make not to fix your car. Replacing the engine from what i heard from the service manager was 15k just for the engine not including the labor.

Just got my car back with tne new long block. I was somewhat surprised to learn that the new engine did not have spark plugs installed, so the old ones (31,000 miles) were used.

The injectors were very dirty; they were cleaned and reinstalled. Perhaps that was caused by the oil burning.

So far, so good-have put about 40 miles on it.

I was told that I received a new long block because the remanufactured engine was not available for another two weeks and the dealer went to bat and said they didn't want to keep me waiting any longer.

Just got my car back, short block engine installed in my 12' R spec.....so happy.

Are you two saying they covered your engine replacements under warranty?

yes warranty covered, took a long time for them to approve, with oil consumption test. they wanted me to bring the car in every 1k miles for like 4 times. then they approved and had the car for 3 weeks. i got a loaner. cars been running great every since it was fixed no problems.

I'm burning 1 quart/1000 miles and on my second dealership with the consumption test. Saturday, after only three visits and 3200 miles on a full synthetic oil change they're telling me 1 quart/1000 miles is normal. It's crazy already. I'm so tired of wasting time with a system that seems to be rigged. I'd really appreciate it if you have any advice as to how to get this resolved. I've got 70K on the car but started this process at 50K and it's documented.. Thanks!

I'm still watching the oil issue on mine (2012 built March 6, 2012) and as of the last oil change, I had them check the oil level before changing the oil, and they said it was down one half a quarter. They suggested continuing to watch it, but called that level of consumption "normal" anyway. Others I've talked to say they never see oil consumption in their vehicles between 5000 miles with each oil change. I'll be having the next oil change done on Wed. and will ask them to check it again.

Those who have had this problem much worse with the 2012 5.0 engines, did it start off just a half quart or so down between oil changes and get worse over time?

There's no way one quart per 1000 miles is normal. No way.

mine got worse over time, 10k miles since rebuild and doesnt burn a drop now. i have the dealer always check when they drain it during oil changes.
