  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Best Engine Oil for Genesis 2012 V6

I have a 2002 Elantra, now has 190,000 miles on it. OC with Mobile 1 5w-30 every 7000 miles and factory filter. Still runs like new. Mobile 1 is for real, frequent changes are probably more important than oil brand.

Mobil 1 since its inception in 1975 -- No probs ---ever

I just ended up going to the local oil change place and they put Valvoline full synthetic 5w-20 in it. I think most of the big names are all just as good as each other these days.

But best of all, before the change I could hear the lifters for a bit as it warmed up. Now it's quiet. I have noticed this in every motor I have owned and went from dino oil to the good stuff. This reason alone is enough for me to recommend any quality synthetic...

Synthetic 5w-20 is great for low temps (and high temps)

The dealer I bought my Genesis from said they use and recommend Mobil 1 5w20 for the 3.8, 4.6, and 5.0 engines on the various Genesis models.

The 2015-2016 3.8 V6 requires 5W-30 according to owners manual. 5W-20 is OK for the V8, although I would recommend 5W-30 or OW-30. Synthetic is definitely the way to go, although required by the owner's manual.

I was asking about, and they were talking about, 1G Genesis models. It sounds like the 2G, they are recommending as you stated.

Yes, I understand you were talking about the 1G. However, I don't think there is much difference between the 2014 3.8 V6 and the 2015 3.8 V6. Maybe no differences at all.

I just suspect that after having experience and time under their belts, that Hyundai now thinks 5W-30 is better for any model year of the 3.8 V6. They obviously are not going to change that for previous years, as that would open up a lot of legal issues that they don't want.

As I said, having done a lot of oil changes on my G1 3.8 V6 with various viscosities, I believe that 5W-30 for the 3.8 V6 (or even 5.0 V8) is best for engine longevity. 5W-20 "may" be very slightly better for gas mileage.

I have an oil change coming soon, at the dealer where I"ll be getting service, and I'll ask them what they recommend. What is difference between 5W20 vs. 5W30?

5W is a better viscosity when cold

30W is a better viscosity when hot.

So if you live in south Florida - maybe 5w-30

if you live in Va like me - maybe 5w-20

You really wouldn't go wrong either way.

Either way - go with a synthetic - I use Mobil 1 - Price is not a big differential anymore.

What he said. About the brand, you can't go wrong with Pennzoil, Royal Purple and Mobil 1.

Not needed. Just choose $12 from the 'Rebate amount' drop-down.

Depends on what products you buy. Some people may buy oil and filter for another car they have.

The list is titled "Some participating retailers". Mobil 1 runs this rebate two times per year. It has been confirmed Walmart is okay.

And you're gonna earn that $12

can you get 18 qts for a $36 rebate? might be worth it

I got 2 thirsty cars

Factory fill for Hyundai is Shell.

The Theta, Lambda and Tau engines all get "louder" when you use Castrol, Mobil, Royal Purple, etc.

I have a Lambda owner (In a Coupe) that has been running Shell Rotella 5W40 for the last 65,000 miles, zero issues or complaints and his UOA looked damn good with 7.5K intervals.

I too recently switched to Shell Rotella 5W40 in my Tau and enjoy the quieter engine and it appears to be a very minimal gas mileage hit.
