  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Sunroof Rattle

If you go to a Hyundai dealership and look at a bunch of new Genesis, you will notice at least half of them have seals that aren't seated correctly between the two glass panels.

I'm wondering if there is a defect in the manufacturing of the vehicle. I'm wondering how to make Hyundai aware of this problem in such a way that they can issue a TSB on the problem. I'm worried that down the road the seals will cause an issue.

- My guy at Chantilly Hyundai said they Hyundai know there is a problem with the seals and are apparently working/engineering the fix but right now the fix is not avail - but lead me to believe it is forthcoming. As I mentioned Im in a 16 loaner and the seals look much more robust/flush/tight etc

Interesting. How much do you know that guy? Can you trust him?

Hopefully "forthcoming" means before people's warranties run out. Unless they make a recall...

This right here could make an extended warranty worth it. I'm at 15,000mi and with this issue, and all the tech, I'm definitely buying one.

She has the most amazing prices and no sales tax. I'm waiting for my HPP contract refund so I can repurchase my warranty and save $600 off my dealer price.

Starting to figure this whole rattle thing out. Took mine in for a sunroof rattle - Fairfax Hyundai fixed that but then I notice the whole roof creak/rattle. Took it to Hyundai of Chantilly they say seals were not replaced correctly. They performed the fix and say rattles are gone. Chantilly also said there are new seals pending but Hyundai hasn't sent them out yet?

UPDATE
Spoke too soon now the roof is not creaking but the sunroof is rattling AGAIN.
Is/has anyone had a full roof replacement? So frustrating. Time to all Hyundai USA?

It is a known issue that they should replace. If they play dumb, they can talk to Tim Machuca at Sterling McCall Hyundai in Houston TX. He just did mine. Service manager.

Did you get a full new top/sunroof?

I've been without my Genesis (having the seals replaced) since last Thursday. I have a bad feeling that my rattle and "crunching" sounds will return as well.

This wouldn't be so bad if I actually had a loaner Genesis (or even real Hyundai loaner vehicle). They were out of loaners and put me in a used 2012 Sonata Hybrid....78,000 miles and stinks of dog and smoke.

Just an update on my sunroof rattle situation. Back in February my local dealer was authorized to replace the entire panoramic sunroof assembly. I had loud creaking as well as the seal was coming off between the panes of glass. That made the noise go away completely.... until a couple of weeks ago. The creaking has come back starting like it did last time creaking when going over bumps or minor road imperfections. I'll have them take a look at it at my next oil change which is due in a few weeks. I'm sure they will want to lube it again and see how it goes. I thought for sure the new assembly did the trick and couldn't believe when the noise started up again.

Clearly Hyundai needs to come out with a permanent fix for this. Hopefully rumors are true that they're working on it.

I have had a frustrating creaking that sounds like it is coming from the panaroof area since the day I bought my 2015 Genesis in Aug 2014. I have been dealing with it, waiting and reading posts to see if there is a solid solution before I have the dealer tear apart my car. A couple months ago I read a post that mentioned the overhead map light/sunroof control panel. So I applied upward pressure from my right hand on the panel as I drove over minor bumps. The creaking goes away until I release pressure! However, there is a different and distinct dull popping sound that I believe is the panaroof if the car is twisted. For instance, while backing left or right out of a steep driveway. But it is not the same sound or as obnoxious as the constant creaking while driving on a bumpy road. I will have Hyundai look at the overhead control panel next time it’s in for oil change and post the outcome. Give it a try!

My dealership proactively fixed that thankfully. They said there is a ton of dead space above the dome lights/roof controls/sunglasses holder. They had that removed when they replaced sunroof seals and said they packed insulation in there. Definitely helped.

I'm wondering if there is a DIY solution for this? Is it hard to remove the ceiling cloth and pack with insulation?

There is dead space, probably to save weight. Just like the hood that bounces around in front of my windshield like a flimsy piece of paper!

Took mine to dealer on 8 Sep. Mechanic drove it first, said he barely heard it. Then we both took a ride and verified the creaking sound over bumps. He pulled the control panel down and added felt insulation around overhead console. He said he also added non-metal washers or spacers (can't remember) to the 2 screws that secure the control panel, no charge. All I can say is, WHAT A DIFFERENCE!! Now all I hear is the loud road noise from the Michelins I did not want from the tire recall and a slight dull thumping noise at times from the pana roof. I'm waiting on solid fix before I have them tear apart my panaroof. Hope this repair works for you.
Update: Sept 17, 2016 - Still no creaking sound from the overhead console, so much better!

Back in April I posted a message in this thread when my rattle had progressed to the point of being too much. I included the picture below as a way to help identify where the rattle and clunk sound comes from.

Unfortunately over the course of the summer, my rattle has been slowly coming back. It is not as bad as it was, but it is heading that direction. One thing I found I could do to eliminate it is once the roof was fully open - to close it about 1 inch then stop it. That seems to keep the rattle down quite a bit. But I am also starting to get some creaks and ticks here and there as well when closed. I will most likely have to bring it back again by the end of the year.

Anyhow - just posting this pic to help people see and understand where the issue seems to be at.

Carry on... :)

Update on mine, back to being super loud again. Service manager says they'll clean and relube again, I told him no go. Replace it or keep the car, waiting on loaners to be available in the next couple of weeks then it's going back.

Really want to step up to the G90 soon, but thinking of throwing Hyundai in the trash where it belongs and moving on.

Anyone with a 2015 had this problem fixed? My 2015 3.8 Ultimate has this rattle as well. I'm taking it to the dealer on Wednesday. Thankfully, they're giving me a loaner car.
Did you get this resolved mine is driving me nuts

After waiting months for this magical dry lube that would solve all my woes (Only they never got any) I escalated at the dealership and they are looking at it next week with anticipation of replacing the seals (I think that was what he said). The guy mentioned the new Sonatas are dealing with a similar issue, so given the quantity of Sonatas to Genesis I am hoping that actually helps us get through this mess quicker now that there will be a larger light on the issue.
