  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Sunroof Rattle

I've had the creak and rattle situation that is worse in the cold. The first 2 times they said they couldn't reproduce it. The sunroof stopped working and they fixed it by replacing sunroof carriage and sled assembly and also the defective left roof molding. The creaking has stopped. The rattle is much better but I feel like there are other rattles maybe coming from the rearview mirror or the radar in front of the rearview mirror. It's much better now than it was.

This seems to have fixed my creaking and rattling. Even in the freezing cold weather.

I agree about the sun roof rattles going away during the colder weather. My 3.8 V6 sedan is quiet as a mouse again now that temperatures are below 50. Actually it has not been as bad as others have reported (as yet 22000 miles).

Following posting of this message I sent an email to Dave Zuchowski to alert him of the issues I was having. He replied within an hour asking his people to resolve ASAP. Hopefully this is a good sign from Hyundai management.

Emailed the CEO about a car repair issue and he responded within an hour? Lol. Cuz he doesn't have bigger problems to deal with. That dude was fired.

I'm pretty sure the CEO of a multi-billion $ company doesn't read his own email - he seems to have a good team of people who are able to get things done for their customers when they send an email to the CEO's email address though.

In any case, he certainly wasn't fired for responding to customer emails.

I brought mine in for the same issue. Rattling noise. They isolated it to a bunch of loose bolts that were supporting the cross member across the pano roof. Took less than a day to fix. When I dropped it off, I thought, ok, this will take a few days so I arranged for a loaner. They had a 2017 Genesis G90 sitting there waiting for me. :woot: Nice car, but can't justify the spend.

The rattling noise is now gone and its quiet as a mouse. I'll keep monitoring it as time goes by.

I think 545 posts adequately demonstrates that sun roofs are the curse of the pricier cars - maybe all cars.

The first requirement on the list when I bought my 2016 Genesis was "NO SUN ROOF". That alone make it a base car. I didn't get a lot of options I would have
gladly paid for but I can live with it. I still love it.

The G80 base looks like the perfect choice for my next car. All the safety features (smart cruise, blind spot, lane keep, etc) are standard equipment, and NO SUN ROOF.

Precisely. Any good company always has at least one person who handles executive inquiries. I headed such a staff many years ago in my career. It's also a great place to be in a corporation because it gives you daily contact with the executives. Great placement for career advancement if you make the most out of the opportunity.

Thanks for the information! I have been thinking the same, "if only they offered the my ULTIMATE without the sunroof"! Happy to hear that it can now be had without one. Now I will consider a G80 when I'm ready to trade.

Just back from D.C. Auto show ... G80 pulling most of the attention - including mine. Talked to the rep about the roof issue - acted like they never heard about it!! Come to find out 5.0 AWD will be avail in US later/ next yr. Two improvements noticed - phone charge pad and one USB and 12v outlet under radio. Plus 1 USB and 1 11v in arm rest - some new tech. Had to pull myself away as thoughts of trading in started ...

lol @ trade temptation. Try to keep this thought in mind. Based on the current trajectory and the delta between the BH and the DH, the DH successor will surpass the DH by a healthy margin. The next generation may or may not have a V8 option, at which point if you still want a V8 AWD, you find one of the leftover ones at a bargain price. Personally I'm curious to see the G80/G90 successors.

I'm in on the rear "rattle" in my 2015 3.8 sedan. Usually only on local streets and seems to be worse with a right rear bump or pothole. Not a speedbump but a hole in the street.

I know that sound all too well. So hard to figure out when you are driving alone.
You add a passenger and it goes away. Very frustrating for sure.

I took my car in for the sunroof rattle. Had to take a drive with the service manager. He noticed that the rattle happened even at low speeds. He put me in a loner(Elantra). They will replace the entire sunroof. 1 week already and have not heard anything from them. Hope they are taking care of my car.

I am a 2015 5.0 RWD Genesis owner. Purchased in January 2016 new and took the car into service for sunroof rattle on December 13th. Still not fixed. Driving a loaner which is 2017 G80. I am now starting to hear the rattle in the G80. Since this seems to be a known problem you would think something whether it be a recall or class action suit would of been started by now.

I just bought a used genesis and did not notice the rattle while test driving but now am noticing a rattle that seems to come from the middle of the sunroof (goes away when I open or tilt the sunroof). I bought lubricant suggested earlier in this thread and it did not help, but I plan to try a second and more substantial coat to see if it does.

If not, I guess I will have to go to the dealer.

after applying the lubricant on two different occasions I still have the rattle. It does not rattle all the time but still enough to annoy me. I cant hear it with the sunshade closed but then I also cant enjoy the panoramic roof.

I was thinking of getting 2016 genesis and this issue worries me a lot as I am extremely sensitive for rattle noise. I am originally from south korea so I looked up korean genesis forum and lots of them have the same issue and Hyundai doesn't seem to find the solution as yet.

just got my car back from the dealer. The entire sunroof was replaced. So far no rattle but its to early to tell. I'm just happy to have my car back as it took almost a month to get it fixed.

I hope your replacement does the trick. Mine did for about 4 months, then it came back just as bad as before. I've escalated my situation to their consumer affairs division. They insisted on going through the motions of having the local service engineer do his thing again (this would be for I believe the fourth time now) so that happened this past Tuesday). He did his fixes which were clearly bandaids, said that fixed it, the service manager said I don't think so I'm keeping the car for a day and driving it myself since he had another 2015 Genesis there with the same problem. Sure enough he drove my car the next day and the noise was back again. So he was forced to put a note back out to the same service engineer that the noise was back and asked for next steps. I have a note in to my contact at the East Coast division of consumer affairs asking what my next steps are, as this has been going on for two and a half years. The only way to drive the car without an awful noise is to have the sunshade closed, which takes away the $4,000 option I paid for and also makes no sense on a $52,000 car. I have to think as they are trying to build their luxury Genesis brand they are going to try to make things right and are just required to try all of these steps first, but clearly there is a serious issue that they obviously do not know how to fix, and completely removing the entire roof and replacing it with a new one does not resolve it for more than 4 months. I cannot think they want to put in writing that they will promise to continue to do that for me for as long as I own the vehicle. And they can't want people's first impressions of their new luxury brand to be seeing the only owners they know always driving around in one of the lowest model Hyundai's because their Genesis is in the shop waiting for the regional service engineer to return to pretend to know how to diagnose and fix the sunroof issue. My car has been in the shop for over a collective month and a half over the time I have owned it for various sunroof diagnosis, and could have been in for much more but clearly it's not worth it as there is no fix. I put my request into their Consumer Affairs division just before Christmas and was just scheduled to be looked at this week.

It's really quite embarrassing. If they would just admit that they have a design flaw in the vehicle (like they did by not including the panoramic sunroof in the G90) they could stop wasting our time and their time and money and we could move on to something more productive. As first owners we are basically their brand ambassadors. I'm asked all the time would I buy the car again or opt for another luxury car. How they decide to ultimately handle this situation will determine the answer to that question - so far it's definitely leaning towards a no. It's hard to answer that as a yes to my coworkers (who are in the market for a new luxury car) when they keep asking me month after month why I'm once again driving an Elantra instead of the Genesis that I bought. Unfortunately right now the correct answer is that Hyundai is unable to admit to itself that it has a problem it cannot fix. I can understand that might be hard to admit to a customer, especially when trying to establish a new brand, but if you're going to end up in the same place no matter what then maybe getting there the honest way may be the best path to start off what you hope to be a long lasting relationship.

Sorry for the long post - when I bought this car, it was my first of what I hoped to be many Hyundai/Genesis cars. I immediately saw the value proposition they were offering. I just hope that they back that up with the service that is absolutely expected at this price point. I will say that the service department at my Hyundai dealership has been excellent, and I would guess they probably don't see more than a handful of Genesis vehicles.
